MP3: Heavy Young Heathens - "Shine" MP3: Heavy Young Heathens - "Jackie Come Lately" Heavy Young Heathens make California rock 'n 'roll run through a fuzz pedal, made over a ton of cigarettes and a bunch of alcohol. But that's not the end of it, no it certainly isn't. Then they expose the music to the attitude and snarl of '70s psychedelic rock which turns that fuzzed out California-style into something awesomely nasty. The drum and bass duo of brothers Aron and Robert Mardo is a crisp distorted [...]

The most popular question I get is, "Swap, I know you're a genius... but how MUCH of a genius you are... that's what I'm wondering." I usually pat the person on the shoulder and give them a sympathetic look as I reply with "Way over your head, my friend... way over your head." They'll give me an understanding look, buy me a drink, and then I'll do something stupid to prove that I'm actually a huge douchebag. Well, it's that time again... yes, somebody asked me the question and I did something stupid. Just HOW stupid, [...]

Photo by Leon Gazarian The LA rock duo Heavy Young Heathens recently came to my attention with a new (free) EP that is just fantastic. On it, brothers Aron and Robert Mardo showcase their melodic and rhythmic dexterity with a lot of confidence and great songs. Musically, Heavy Young Heathens play bass & drums, then layer in theremin and keyboards into the songs. The six songs breeze through a number of styles; from the Who-like "Young Man Blues" of "Make Room For The Youth;" the McCartney vibes of "Daylight [...]

Something about Sean Tillman makes you want to check your inhibitions at the door. As Har Mar Superstar he manages to make Top 40 safe for indie fans, and last fall's release "Dark Touches" brings a smile to your face and gives you happy feet too. Over the years his Spaceland shows have been almost legendary affairs, and he restarts the party at the Silver Lake club tonight, with Utah's Neon Trees and local quartet Little Red Radio opening. ... Meanwhile, former L.A. phenoms the Ettes [pictured] play the Echo — the [...]
For any of you Black Rebel Rebel Motorcycle Club fans out there who enjoy some gritty, frenzied, bluesy dance rock, you must check out Heavy Young Heathens. If their self-titled album was much faster-paced, it might go into orbit. Of course the most frenzied are my favorite, like "Sha La La La La" and "Jackie Come Lately" But the whole album will no doubt keep you rocking out, headbanging,

Just added to this Silverlake Lounge bill is THE RINGERS , basically family here at FS, to go with our friends HEAVY YOUNG HEATHENS and THE YELLING . Quite a bill. It's going to be sweaty and loud.... Also over at the Wiltern tonight, Future Sounds rep'd act, LONGWAVE , play with Blue October. Congrats to them, will sound good in that big, beautiful room. FS30 act, [...]

On their self-titled debut album, Heavy Young Heathens , the musical bonding of brothers Aron and Robert Mardo, keep it raw and unvarnished — a straight-outta-the-garage Anglophilia that does its damnedest not to hide behind the fuzz. It's not a huge leap from the dirty glam the L.A.-based brothers did on two albums as Mardo , but its stripped-down quality feels more immediate. Whiskey, please. ||| Download: "Sha La La La La" ||| Live: Heavy Young Heathens play tonight at the Silverlake Lounge with Roll [...]

Dawes , the L.A. quartet whose previously self-released debut "North Hills" gets a shot of adrenaline when ATO Records re-releases it on Sept. 29, starts its L.A. residency (the foursome is also doing Mondays at the Detroit Bar) at the Echo. Supporting are Slang Chickens and a band called Big Echo — whom Web In Front deduces to be the Morning Benders . ... The Capshuns , whose music I previewed back in May , will be test-driving some of the new album they're working on when they play Club NME at Spaceland; [...]

[Getting back into town today after a little road trip. Thanks to my pinch-bloggers the past few days; happy birthday to Stewart Copeland; and here's a full plate of music goodies from which to sample tonight:] My trip to the heartland yielded a good read or two, including this Riverfront Times interview with Son Volt's Jay Farrar on his band's new album "American Central Dust." The quintet plays the Wiltern tonight with the Cowboy Junkies . ... The "Also I Like to Rock" free concert [...]

Heavy Young Heathens self titled debut Sept 1 LA-based brother duo act Aron and Robert, aka Heavy Young Heathens , is set to release their self titled debut on September 1st. Their fanbase had been built upon word of mouth following some high profile performances supporting the likes of R.E.M. (who personally invited the band to support In Austria), The Raveonettes & Autolux, Violent Femmes, and Ben Kenney of Incubus/The Roots. Check them out on myspace .

The trek from North County to downtown San Diego was a laid back affair. One hand on the steering wheel, the other gripped firmly around the rigid cardboard container of coffee, always with a finger or two free to adjust the volume knob on the CD player. My musical companions for this leg of the journey were none other than the Ripple stalwarts, Heavy Young Heathens . The music from their self released, self titled album had me nodding my head with their addictive groove, and smiling like I was in possession of one of life's earth shattering secrets. [...]

Set your alarm clocks, program your reminders and tie a ribbon around your finger. Tonight at the House Of Blues, go see HEAVY YOUNG HEATHENS . Who cares who the other bands are, just go see this band that's finally back from a long US tour, so their chops will be up. alt=rss

When I walked around the corner of Brick By Brick and saw that the big doors were open for the bands to load their gear, I was pretty certain that I'd be walking into a room full of band members, roadies, club security, and groupies. To see one somewhat disheveled guy rooting around through road cases overflowing with gear was a bit of a surprise. And, when I ultimately recognized this guy as none other than Aron Mardo from Heavy Young Heathens, I knew that the heavens were looking down on me with favor. Not that I wouldn't have been [...]

Well Waveriders , it's the end of August and the kids are preparing to go back to school. The temperatures are in the hundreds and everybody is looking for some relief from the heat. And, I mean everybody. I coulda' swore I saw the devil himself hosing down in my backyard before standing in front of the air conditioning unit. But, I'm not here to talk about theology or the financial dilemma I face with my utility bills. I'm here to tell you about the word on the street . . . or, in this case, the information super [...]
