Heinali and Matt Finney have been featured on Earbuddy before for some interesting covers of Nirvana and a song from the Lou Reed & Metallica collaboration . I had the chance interview them about their work as a duo, more covers that they're considering, and the meaning behind their self-named genre "doomgaze". Heinali and Matt Finney were previously featured on Earbuddy for their cover of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Well, the crazy duo (one's from the Ukraine, one's from Alabama) are back at it again -- covering "Junior Dad" from the much trashed album Lulu that was released by Lou Reed and Metallica. Read our take on it in Own It or Disown It - Lulu . I actually enjoy Heinali and Matt Finney's take on it. What do you guys think? With an album as divisive as Lou Reed and Metallica's Lulu, you know cover versions would be rolling out eventually. Well, transatlantic "whiskeygaze" duo Heinali and Matt Finney (whose Ain't No Night we reviewed here) have just released their version of Loutallica's "Junior Dad." Granted, it's quite a ways truncated from the nearly 20-minute original, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
Download producer Heinali and poet Matt Finney cover of Loutallica's 'Junior Dad.' 16 minutes shorter than the original, and so much more listenable!
By Andrew Wilhelm (Denver)The barriers to making a living off of music are higher than they've ever been. Making the actual music? Those gates aren't as daunting as they once were. Most chatter of this nature focuses on amateurism, but something not discussed as much is the fact that musicians do not have to be on the same continent to record music. We've already seen this with grind unit

Ever have a pen pal? Well, duo Heinali and Matt Finney may as well be considered as such. One of them is from the Ukraine and the other is from Alabama. They've never met in person but have released 4 albums together, a soundtrack for a photo exhibition, and a handful of covers. Their sound is a combination of dark ambient/drone metal/doomgaze with spoken word elements. If you were a fan of Spin Magazine's recent Nevermind cover album Newermind , you may want to check out Heinali and Matt Finney's cover of "Smells [...]
Download great new covers of songs by Nirvana, Karmin, the Bee Gees, Can, and Nine Inch Nails!

I've had this baby for a while. Not that I didn't want to review it, but I just didn't want to put it up without an album cover. Thanks to my own desire to indulge in my anger and brooding and reminders by Matt Finney (if he didn't remind me, this never would have gotten up), I'm finally proud to present you Ain't No Night , the newest production by my favorite (and probably the only) spoken-word/shoegaze combo. Heinali and Matt Finney are revolutionary in their own right. I've never before heard of a band consisting of [...]

Here's the second installment of mega post week. Enjoy! … Greg Cee // Demos: Volume Three One dude that I am super excited to share with you is Greg Cee . He emailed me before I left for vacation and it's been torture having to sit on his tunes for a few weeks. But if there is one blessing in that waiting period it was that my love for his music has done nothing but grown in that time. He released a digital single [...]

Streaming at the bottom of the page. For the past couple of months or so, I've been trying to fill my life with meaning. I've gotten a job, I've kept this blog alive, I'm starting another side project with a friend of mine; I'm doing everything in my power to pull myself out of the abyss that is life. And every time I start making progress, these guys come and release a new album and the cycle starts all over again. To be perfectly honest, this isn't my favorite work [...]
Download the Ukranian composer and American poet's spooky, droney 'Plainsong' and 'Creep' covers.

Heinali and Matt Finney // "Plainsong" (The Cure Cover) A few weeks ago I wrote about the Ukraine/Alabama duo Heinali and Matt Finney and their electrifying brand of doom/spoken-word/post-rock. They have such a big sound and their decision to cover The Cure's "Plainsong" is one that I couldn't really picture until I heard it. Looking back it makes perfect sense. The original song has a sprawling gothic feel that one might not picture being covered by a band like this. But these two maestros assemble the various [...]

This guy cracks me up. Every time. Like, just talking to him one-on-one, he doesn't even need voice inflection to be funny. Nevertheless, I brought him in for an interview where we shared a few laughs and got to know the ambient/spoken word duo even more. Ben: How did you first "meet" Heinali? Matt: We were drifting around Seattle and we both ended up in the same homeless shelter. We got to talking about music and Heinali said, "I can't really play guitar but I know these 2 [...]

Heinali and Matt Finney // Conjoined EP One genre that I really love is doom, but I don't get to blog about it much. There is just a raw power that is harnessed within the genre. And there is also a certain amount of restraint in drawing out the release of that power. It's almost like the breathing of some heavy monster. So I was pretty surprised when I received an email from these two artists. Matt Finney is a spoken-word artist from Alabama who works with Ukranian composer Heinali [...]

I'll admit it. We fell into the same trap that every magazine and blog on the planet did. The self-indulgent, we-know-what-you-should-like-b etter-than-you-do Best Albums of 2010 list. Here at TDOA headquarters, we'd like to think that we've given you some names that weren't familiar and provided you with some surprises. But at the end of the day, who better to assess the state of music than the musicians themselves? So, we reached out to every band that we interviewed in 2010 and asked them to give us their favorite albums of the year. [...]

When I began the process of putting together my top ten albums list, I realized that this had been an exceptional year for EP's. On the ever-changing landscape of the music business, many new bands have begun to release free EP's to try and gain an audience. Many of the EP's on this list are either free or inexpensive. They are also a sign that 2011 is going to be a fantastic year, as these bands release full-length records. Among these are some of the best songs of 2011. Enjoy! 01 New [...]

Back in September, we featured an interview with Heinali and Matt Finney that stirred a lot of interest amongst our readers. Their brand of dark, moody music struck a nerve with everyone and has been one of our favorite listens of 2010. When the folks from Ditto Music sponsored a contest, fans flocked to their site and voted for HAMF, which led to their eventual victory. As a thanks to TDOA readers, the guys have offered us an exclusive download of their brilliant cover of Candidate, by Joy Division. A complete reinterpretation of the [...]

Behold: one of the most depressing records of the year. A collaboration between American poet Matt Finney and Ukrainian composer Heinali , Lemonade is a staggeringly, unrelentingly bleak affair. The layering of Finney's angst-ridden spoken word contributions over Heinali's cavernous, droning ambience is strikingly reminiscent of a inferior version of Nine Inch Nails' more oblique outings. These nine tracks form a sort of self-lacerating suite, the music forming a relatively coherent - if amorphous - whole and Finney's gravelley suicide-noir sprinkled relatively randomly across the top, forming not an understandable narrative but rather adding to [...]
