Download: Helicopters - "Emergency"Eclectic electro-pop trio Helicopters have been flying all over the place lately, including papers known for publishing editorial cartoons of questionable taste. The band appeared in the New York Post's "Popwrap" music column. Here's a taste of what the Post wrote:Helicopters mesh pop, hip hop, folk, electronica and rock in a way that may become its own genre.

Chicago's Helicopters do this great synth, rock guitar, sweet vocals sound that is all but obvious on their single "Emergency" off last years full-length Sizing Up The Distance . The band apparently gained recognition after winning a battle of the bands competition that gave them a performance at the 2007 Lollapalooza festival. Cool. Go them. Check out "Emergency," you will like it. (Thanks to 3hive for this one) Helicopters – "Emergency" [MP3] Helicopters on Myspace Posted in MP3 Tagged: chicago, Emergency, Helicopters, MP3, Music

Maybe it's because it's been an extremely long week or maybe because it's all wet, windy and orange sky outside at midnight (reminds me of England) but I'm more in the shoegazer mood this week - songs that make my eyebrows go all scrunchy and my lower lip slightly stick out. It's a me thing, don't worry about it. There's still a few beats in there though so without further ado: The winner this week is Adele's "Hometown Glory" remixed. I love the original (and have posted that and another remix in the past - click on [...]
It was another busy week last week, finishing up grant applications and trying to get all my work done before spring break. One of my best friends from home got into grad school last week, so I went up to Wesleyan University to visit him and to celebrate. Downtown Middletown was much nicer than I expected (which is often people's response to New Haven, as well), and I liked the neighborhoods around campus. The social scene there wasn't too different, although people head out a bit later than my usual routine. Surprisingly diverse campus, too, for a small liberal arts [...]

February just flew right by me, almost as if it never happened! This is the last mixtape for the month, and I think probably on eof the best (with the exception of the Tinted WIndows track- I'm not entirely sold on the whole supergroup-does-jonas-brothers -esque-pop-rock thing yet, but it's good to hear some James Iha guitar riffage). New stuff from Howie Day and Phoenix and the title track from my most anticipated album of the year: The Hazards of Love , from The Decemberists. Okay, that's all I got to say about this week's mixtape, just downlaod the zip file, [...]

Man, recessions suck. It's all work, work, work. I've been woefully ignorant of all of these Internet happenings except perhaps Twitter because, y'know, that's just quick random thoughts, right? But what we could really use in these lean times are free MP3 downloads. So god bless you for going strong with 3Hive, Sean and Joe and Clay, because there's so much great music out there and, long hours be damned, we gots to share the sharing! Like Chicago's Helicopters, a group that got its first major exposure by winning a battle of the bands contest that gave them [...]

The new album from Chicago's Helicopters is called Sizing Up the Distance and will be available on April 28 via Fly Casual Records . The band caught its first big break appearing at 2007s Lollapalooza fest (they were the Last Band Standing winner). Since then, the band has released an EP, made several appearances on compilations, and shared the stage with the likes of Athlete and Au Revoir Simone. While many bands are quick to wipe the [...]

The comparisons between Death Cab For Cutie and Helicopters may be unavoidable, but this Chicago band are more than a rehashing of a familiar sound. Listening to Sizing Up The Distance (due for digital bonus release April 28), the quality of this band's lushly layered sound is unavoidable. Their tendency to move towards the synthesized just feels completely right, while it remains warm and engaging. There's an intricacy to their [...]
i know what you are thinking - frank, my brain can't decipher your tone of voice when you don't capitalize your letters. tell that to helicopters, cause they don't capitalize shit! i'll be honest, i don't know the accuracy of that statement, but when it comes to their name, leave ...
Worth A Trip To Wrigleyville Helicopters with Smoking Popes, The Dials at Cubby Bear on Saturday. 14 bux - that's a steal to see these 3.
british indie band bloc party put out a new video for their new joint, and it's awesome. off the new album, intimacy . first time i heard of bloc party was from my girl raqui, but the first time i jammed them was at this barber shop in boston with my man kendall. i know what you're thinking, but it wasn't a typical barbershop. it was more like a salon, but i found a hispanic dude who cuts good hair in there, [...]
Hovering Around We've been digging hard on local band Helicopters since they sent us a copy of their latest album, Sizing Up The Distance. People are certainly hearing much about the band since they won a Lolla slot and have...

Bloc Party has a new album out called Intimacy. I think it's fantastic, but I have liked everything this band has put out. It speaks to many parts of me. I love rock. I am a DJ. I like diversity. I like indie bands, too. Bloc Party is probably one of the most popular bands in the indie genre. Despite their popularity, this new album seems to be getting negative feedback: sounding overproduced to sounding messy and utilizing too many effects. "Were you hoping for a miracle?" [...]

To those of you who have been living under a rock, Bloc Party is an English indie rock band composed of Kele Okereke and Russell Lissack , subsequently joined by bassist Gordon Moakes and most recently drummer Matt Tong .. I know for a fact that there are thousands of fans out there, and baby, we share the same love for the group. Here are a few of my favorites [...]

Somewhere between Bloc Party and Grizzly Bear lies Chicago's Helicopters. At first glance you might be thrown by the indie/electro/pop genre they've given themselves. Sure they're indie. Sure they're electro. Sure they're pop. But there's no new wave echoes slanting their sound. Lush is the word I would use. Instead of using electronics as a foundation for each song, on Helicopters' new LP Sizing Up The Distance ( FlyCasual Records ) they use keyboards and computers as accents to complement the soft expansive songs built around melodic guitars and vocals. The outcome is similar to The Notwist at [...]

Tonight in Virginia don't miss the first of two shows featuring These United States at Iota . This show will also sport two great bands in The Apparitions and The Cotton Jones Basket Ride. If you're much further north on this particular evening perhaps you might want to check a great show a Philly's The Fire with Helicopters, Balance & Composure, Silence The Sky, and Chris Batten and the Woods. Or maybe you'd like to see one of the greatest of all time, Bob Dylan (or as I like to call 'im, Bobby Z), who is playing [...]

Thank you Lauren from up the street! You are such a wonderful friend for making a donation to the page, and as I said earlier, I owe you and Nick a lunch at Soy Cafe. Thank you Michael from Brooklyn! You are one of the good guys, and good guys always win at life while bad guys always lose. I feel like with another two or three good-sized donations, I'll be within shouting distance of my goal. There are six days left to donate. If you have not already, please do, dear readers. Why? My roommates are moving out and [...]
