Beirut - Elephant Gun (mp3) - Lon Gisland EP (Ba Da Bing 2007) Beirut – Lon Gisland EP / Ba Da Bing I think it's pretty safe to proclaim Beirut the unforeseen indie phenomenon of 2006, not to mention the quickly spreading Eastern European flair following suit. For instance, at my rent-paying corporate office job (if only independent radio could provide full financial support, sigh), we can browse anyone's Itunes library that is connected to the server. It's complicated being me. When I was a wee chap my dad threw me around the swimming pool too much so I ended up becoming a bore and a dullard, I hate unexpected things happening, except on the... We came across Daria Tessler at a small shop/gallery in Edinburgh. In her prints, spirits stalked forests, trees grew from boats and flatbed trucks. I thought I could hear raining, on that sunny day, and that is always a good sign that you are on to something. Daria lives in Brooklyn. She loves music, and she loves to make pictures. She whipped these drawings up within days of being invited, and from what I understand all the music was listened to via the cricklycrack of a vinyl turntable. Her musical choices are disparate, sparking, full of life. So are her [...]

Damn it's been a while. I don't even know where to begin. We're in Dubuque, Wisconsin now, right near the Illinois border. It's really nice. We're parked smack dab next to a giant river boat casino, a silent sighing behemoth with strangely unexciting neon lights. The crew has thinned out a bit more, and things seem to be getting slightly more under control, even if the engines are still teasing

Looking for the (new) perfect beat (image via potusol ) In performance at Sunset Junction a couple weekends ago, Valerie Simpson (the finer half of Ashford & Simpson) told a longish story about self-reflection on birthdays and the need for anthems on such noteworthy occasions. Lucky for her, she has co-written some of the most recognizable songs in pop music , so she didn't have far to look ("I'm Every Woman" was her pick). But the point was well taken: [...]

I can't sing. Animals in pain sound better than I do. More melodic. With slightly less yelping. But that didn't stop me giving it a damn good go. Though I use the word, 'good' in the loosest possible way. Anyway, the new Contrast Podcast is up and this week all contributors had to choose an instrumental track and then sing their introduction. Some of it is pretty. Some of it plain isn't. Go here to hear me, Fil , Tim , Simon and [...]

"Church Gone Wild/ Chirpin Hard" is going to be out in few weeks: beginning of march as Hella's webpages say. Suicide Squeeze label will release this new Sacramento's duo work. Some teachers of musical critic wrote on the blackboard the equation: Hella = math rock. But that one is an equation with no solutions. Much more than staccato guitar and drums parts, back and forth, stop and start. [...]
