Oneohtrix Point Never By Greg Salter November 24, 2011 A church seems like an appropriate venue to hear Daniel Lopatin present the music he's been making as Oneohtrix Point Never over the last few years. His albums, particularly the sci-fi ambience of 2010's Returnal and the more fractured, abject tracks on this year's Replica , are meditative, insular, cerebral things, best heard all the way through, on your own. What's more, it seems kind of fitting that an artist who has just created [...]

There's a headrush of duality in the music of Helm, aka London artist Luke Younger. Previous releases have dripped with solipsistic noise elements – the loop of a whooping cough, the scrape of a surface – but here the gaze has widened and turned skyward while concentrating more on individual sources. Each track on Impasse whirs with its own logic, each track creating its own world that links up within the whole to a singular mass that feels much more open. "Glazing Over An Autumn Pastoral" speaks of the infinite, but instead of employing hypnagogic mind tricks, the [...]

Our friend Derek McCabe was at the free Levon Helm Band show at John Gill's Farm yesterday and brought back these amazing photos...

Earlier this week there was question about whether last night's Midnight Ramble at Levon Helm's studio on Plochmann Lane in Woodstock, New York would be by candlelight after Hurricane Irene knocked power out at the famed barn. Luckily power was restored and yesterday's very special Midnight Ramble with guests Bob Weir and Bruce Hornsby and the Noisemakers went on as planned, with electricity. [Photo via Weir's Twitter account ] Bruce and Bobby teamed up for the first time in [...]

Some of you are going to love this album. Some of you are going to hate this album. Judging by the extremely small (and thus inaccurate) sample size of opinions I have gathered over the past couple of weeks, middle ground is nonexistent, or at the very least undiscovered by yours truly. For those expecting [...]
There are sophomore slumps, and there are sophomore stumbles. Helms Alee 's Weatherhead is not a terrible album, but it's a definite step back from their 2008 debut. Here, we find a band experimenting with so many new styles that the winning combination of melodic metal riffs and male/female vocal harmonies that made their first release so promising are often absent here. That's not to say that there's nothing to love on Weatherhead . On "Pretty As Pie", guitarist Ben Verellen channels his inner Slash with an arpeggiated guitar riff that quickly breaks down [...]
Where art-punk meets metal destruction.
In 1998, American alternative rock group, Mercury Rev released what they thought would be their last record. Deserter's Songs, recorded as a sort of final hoorah with little-to-no regard for public opinion, resulted in massive commercial and critical success effectively launching the band to heights previously unmatched. Five years prior, lead singer, David Baker had left the group following the release of Boces and with his departure so left the darker, less-palatable side of the group – something that undoubtedly paved the way for the strange but accessible mood of Deserter's Songs. Now, in [...]
