-Crystal Antlers at Continental Army Plaza, Brooklyn I started off Wednesday with a non-CMJ show, part of Todd P 's week of free shows at the Continental Army Plaza in Williamsburg. Yes it was outside. Yes it was cold. But that didn't seem to put a damper on Crystal Antlers ' ferocious performance. These guys are a loud and gritty, somewhat oversexed, desert rock band from Long Beach CA, whose music may have felt more at home in the grunge era. They sounded really great outside, with the J [...]

Dear CMJ Festival, You're welcome. We know how tough it is for you to find "bands" to play your "festival" - if only there were some organization measuring a band's popularity on college radio or something to point you in the right direction - so we don't mind if you rely on us to turn you on to the "hot tracks." Oh, you think we should check out James Pants? NEWSFLASH: We though of it first. And if you don't believe us, we have proof. And we've laid that proof out in an easy-to-navigate [...]
If you needed someone to tell you which indie band you should be listening to, you'd be hard pressed to find a better arbiter of taste than Debbie Harry. Talk about indie cred! In addition to being a prolifically amazing musician, style icon and singing one of the first popular rap songs, according to a new article in New York Magazine Harry isn't familiar with the word hipster. That might be her most stunning accomplishment. In the article she also mentions a few of her favorite bands. One of the indie bands [...]

Heloise and the Savoir Faire are a super fun NYC based band with buckets of charisma to spare. Their official debut LP Trash, Rats & Microphones was released last spring on Elijah Wood's label Simian Records (a division of Yep Roc ). Stream various tracks here . A Sound Once Forgotten by Brittany Julious There's something about the overall state of independent music to absolutely loathe right now. It's not enough to just complain that a favorite artist has sold out. I don't like the phrase and I hate that concept. Anyone with any knowledge of the music business, especially the independent music business, understands the repercussions inherent in producing music through an independent label. If a gross amount of the once music-purchasing population is now using such download programs as [...]

The Miracle Fortress show originally scheduled for Studio B on September 17 has been moved to Public Assembly (the former Galapagos space). If you could time travel anywhere you wanted, you'd probably pick a cool period like The Middle Ages The Roarin' 20's The Wild West The Great Depression (so you could laugh at all the people while chowing down on a giant Pizzone and a Big Gulp) But not Jason from Heloise and The Savoir Faire . Crazy fucker wants to go into the future, not to ride cool hoverboards and have sex with slutty Scarlett Johansson look-alike robots, but to be a [...]

On the 2008 release Trash, Rats, and Microphones, the gritty glam band Heloise & The Savoir Faire deliver slick, Scissor Sisters-style neo-disco, but with a tough undercurrent that wouldn't be out of place in a hard rock club. Nice! Heloise...

Due to our summer theme on this week's podcast I decided to apply that to this post as well. And nothing says summer more to me than dance and electronica. And if you don't agree, well, then boo-hoo for you. Martin Solveig - "Rockin' Music" This one is Keath's fault. Except it's not. Keath was talking about Ferry Corsten which made me think of this song, so sure that it was by him. Took me like a day, then [...]

Once again, I find myself rushing to get this week's Graboid up, so this will be short. Nearly ten years after their last release, Portishead make their triumphant return with Third . After several listens, i'm still not quite sold on the album yet, but it certainly doesn't make me love the group any less. Other releases worth looking at include Santogold's self-titled debut, The Constantines' Kensington Heights , South's (who spells it out as sOuth? cos it's really lame) You Are Here , and hmm...what [...]

Songs that feature the cooing of Debbie Harry make us happy. Songs that are instantly reminiscent of Prince, Bowie, Of Montreal, et al. and feature the cooing of Debbie Harry? Those make us way happier. Heloise & the Savoir Faire play Mercury Lounge on April 26, as a release party for Trash, Rats & Microphones . (mp3) Downtown Godspeed!
New York City's Heloise and the Savoir Faire have enjoyed a whirlwind ascension to the peak of the dance-punk scene in 2008. With the impending release of their debut album, Trash, Rats and Microphones, and a major push by both Elijah Wood (via his label Simian Records) and the addition of guest vocals on the new album by Debbie Harry, the group seems unstoppable. Synthesis editor Ryan Prado had the glorious opportunity to chat with the group outside the Omni Hotel in beautiful downtown Austin, Texas, during South By Southwest 2008. What follows is as succinct an interview as you [...]
The Good: Islands - "Creeper"; Nick Thornburn has already proven his ability to pen addictively catchy pop songs with The Unicorns and on the first Islands album, but with "Creeper" he may have outdone himself. This song is syrupy smooth, a song of a broken heart with a dance beat and just enough rock licks to appease even the most jaded of music snobs. Its a killer song that gives me super high

New York's electro-rock outfit Heloise & the Savior Faire are gearing up to release their new album Trash, Rats and Microphones this spring. Encapsulating all 80's pop fetishes, the band is fronted by the charismatic Heloise Williams and backed by two electrifying dancers (Joe Shepard and Sara Sweet Rabidoux) as well as a full band (James Bellizia on guitar, Luke Hughett on drums and Jason Diamond on bass). Sounds a bit like Love Shack from The B-52's . [...]
