As a musical journey, Nothing in Rambling is a largely unforgettable trip. The title of this eighth album from Seattle's Helvetia is a bit of a misnomer. It does, in fact, ramble, and that's actually quite a bit of a compliment. Tucked within these 11 songs are fragments that stop and start, and there's an approach to songwriting here that is akin to wandering across a meadow or field without much in the way of a guidebook to set you on your way. In short, Nothing in...

Helvetia Nothing in Rambling Joyful Noise Recordings [2012] Fire Note Says: Helvetia mix Olivia Tremor Control and My Bloody Valentine in a blender and come up with Nothing in Rambling! Album Review: Hevetia (pronounced hel-vee-shuh) play a brand of experimental psychedelic indie rock that calls to mind bands like Deerhunter and classic Elephant 6 bands from the past, without ever falling down the rabbit hole of weirder [...]

Over the weekend, some friends of mine traveled down to Louisville for an evening with indie rock legends Built to Spill. A few days later, I found myself in their living room rehashing the highlights. Among the notable moments was the performance of opening act Helvetia , pronounced "hell-vee-shuh." The Portland, OR project is headed up by Jason Albertini. The band released their latest LP Nothing In Rambling on Joyful Noise Recordings earlier this month. The album is Helvetia's seventh release in six years - a prolific pace. Their experimental brand of guitar-driven [...]
The title of Helvetia’ s new album lays out a good descriptor for the music: rambling. Nothing in Rambling is Helvetia mastermind Jason Albertini trapped in a dark room of psychedelic shimmers, slapping echo, and some instruments making music that feels cyclical—like if you dropped the needle at any point on the record, you would end up right back where you started. He has emerged from that room with an album that has passing-headlight flashes of solid work, but once those lights pass, you’re lost on the dark highway again, only lingering remnants of light in front [...]

It's been a whirlwind few weeks, finishing the kitchen project, rearranging the living room (the above photo is from that project) and now beginning to terrace the back yard. It's hard to imagine I found time to check out new music. This week's favorite discoveries include the new LP by The Maldives, the latest by Dana Falconberry and Art Circus, a phenomenal new LP by Woods, more great stuff from White Blood Cells out of Vancouver, and Upside Drown off a new little Olympia-based label called Antiquated Future Records. Tune in [...]

Visiting the parents is often a stressful time. Despite their incessantly busy schedules, they have actually learned to relax in retirement despite their hectic lifestyle. I visited them two weekends ago now. Hence the absence of an August 17 radio show recap; there was none. Instead, I participated in my brother's wedding. Having just one brother, this was a first. And I'm very excited to have a new sister. He and Diane dated five years before their engagement, just like Andi and myself. (Their engagement story, [...]
PATAHA HISS, HELVETIA, FIELD TRIPS ( East End , 203 SE Grand) Read our article on Helvetia . NORAH JONES, CORY CHISEL AND THE WANDERING SONS ( Edgefield , 2126 SW Halsey, Troutdale) During the early 2000s, there was a law requiring all coffee shops to play Come Away with Me at least four times a day. As a 23-year-old, I somehow didn't relate to a peer who was singing torch songs for the golf-and-macchiato [...]

Last weekend Andi and I visited Anacortes and walked around the dock, discussing our future as polo-shirt-wearing yacht owners and shopping for the ideal water home. Sure, this fantasy may never come to pass, and while I may find myself in a polo shirt now and again, that doesn't mean the boat life is for me. Still, seeing middle-aged to retirees playing cards on the stern and barbecuing sure made the life seem relaxing. Fitting, then, that the night before our Anacortes venture, I played a song off Pale Sunday's new [...]

"RyBro" finds Helvetia continuing their nod to gritty 90s psychedelic experimentation. Weighty guitars are backed by a hefty organ and laid-back, lazy summer guitar riffs, all of it fronted by hazy, dreamy garage-style vocals. I've been listening to Helvetia for several years now (since their 2006 debut), and "RyBro" continues a trait that began long, long ago. With each new release, I come to respect this band even more. Respect is the proper word, as I already "Like" the band about as much as [...]

I'm really digging the sound of this new track from Helvetia , who've just signed on with Joyful Noise Recordings . It's got a classic 90s indie rock sound, but that doesn't mean that it's outdated by any means. There's something about the vocal delivery; it's almost as if there's a bit of twang or drawl hanging on every note. As the song changes direction in towards the end, you can see that the group's not content to settle on any one sound in particular, pushing themselves to include some [...]
