Fine debut EP from Dublin band 'Red Sail' which more than hints at a long career and a superb future debut album. Red Sail are two guys and a girl who bring their talents together to create a kind of indie folk music which is big on charm and atmosphere but struggles to provide impact. Some of the songs remind me of Declan O'Rouke from his 'Since Kyabram' days or of Henrietta Game without the strings. Their folk sound has a [...]

Cork's Bona Fide Federation took the risk to book a Dublin gig early in January and it paid off! The sizable crowd were treated to a great night's music from the headline band and their exceptionally good support Henrietta Game. The six piece band fronted by an amazing vocalist Triona O'Neill performed a set consisting of tracks from their debut EP Night Train, new songs as well as a tasty cover of Feist's 'My Moon, My Man'. The band's sound was a refreshing mix of Pop, Folk, Orchestra Jazz and many more sub genres! [...]

Henrietta Game are fast becoming the most blogged about band on this site. This video is not an official video for the new single 'The Last Time' but I'm sharing it because I like the concept and the echoing sound produced. The video was shot in an old railway station in Belturbet, Co Cavan by Finn Keenan . LAST THING by Henrietta Game If you haven't had the pleasure of [...]

We're past half way in 2011 and the quality in music produced by Irish artists is getting better and better. I've already reviewed three albums this year where I've given full ratings for. In other words the albums from Favourite Sons, Jukebox Gypsy and Reader's Wives were flawless. Here's the best fifteen new tunes I've heard in 2011. [Disclaimer; No one person can listen to every Irish song released but [...]
Even in a musical country as small as Ireland, getting yourself noticed can be a Herculean task. Henrietta Game would seem to be aware of this, launching their debut album with a gig on a famine ship. It's hardly your average night down at Whelan's and an approach that suits the band. They are both unique and strangely familiar at the same time. While their acoustic, almost classical, take on pop music stands out today there are more than a few nods (intentional or otherwise) to the predominant Irish sound of the late '80s. If all [...]

People keep telling us that music journalism is dead. Readers can instantly download and listen to music so why would they care what other people think? Here at fourforty4 we think they do care but that, sometimes, music journalism and criticism isn’t interesting enough. That’s why we’ve launched 2 x fourforty4 – DID YOU SEE WHAT WE DID THERE? – a new type of music review. In this series, two of our contributors will listen to a record individually, then listen together while chatting over [...]

Friday is covers day on the blog and there's no better cover performed at gigs than this track by Henrietta Game: The Yeah Yeah Yeah's 'Hysteric' really suits the band and the lyrics are simply wonderful. Here is my review of the first Irish festival of the season which took place over the last three days in Co. Louth called Vantastival . I was attending the festival as a blogger, music enthusiast as well as a father as I brought my twin 9 year old boys with me. This was the second year of Vantastival . While the line-up of last year was stronger there was really no comparison to be made to last year's inaugural festival. The organisers [...]

..... taken from the Redradar post Fox E & The Good Hands - I Like It Curvy .... I’m delighted to share the new single by the most entertaining band I’ve seen live this year. Fox. E & The Good Hands can be described as a funky Imelda May but to be honest that does not do justice for Eimear Fox’s outstanding vocals. The band have style, confidence and a swagger about them which infuses their live performance. A superb band to watch [...]
