So this is Christmas (well, the correct month at least so its sense of overwhelming schmaltz is nigh) and what have you done you say? Well, we've compiled a few lists along with everyone else equipped with online landfill where whimsical thoughts, Soundcloud links, transcribed scribbles and the like are to be dumped. Here are the tracks that made 2011 tick, tock, rawk, et cetera: from cacophonous shoegaze and the tropical frenzy of Zun Zun Egui all straight outta Bristol, to independent pop impeccability from Florrie and of course The Look, consider this a chart of sorts. If you'll be [...]

This is our first glance at the three-piece that is Her Name Is Calla (Thom Corah and Michael Love left recently). Watch as the remaining members Tom, Sophie and Adam - on guitar, violin and drums respectively - introduce new material. It's a nourishing breeze, and the refrain "I don't have choices/ only anger" will stay with you for days. We only wonder how these departures will impact the songwriting going forward, and how the abbreviated lineup will ever perform, say, Into the West , among our many other favorites. Watch below.

( email | facebook | twitter ) We originally published this article on May 25. Just a hunch: you don't feel you have a firm grasp on Her Name is Calla. Are we right? Certainly the best example is The Quiet Lamb : the sonic assault likely throws you off, and the extended lowercase passages do. At times the compositions play as brassy and imbalanced, as is evidenced by the apocalyptic "Into the West." [...]
Download great new covers of Bastille, Julian Lennon, Kurt Vile, Low, and a gangster rap medley.

Later today the Mercury Prize shortlist for 2011 will be announced, and you can bet your bottom dollar that it will be followed by a million tweets from people saying stuff like "WTF!?!? [insert band] got nominated, but [insert band] didn't?." Rather than trying to guess who will get picked (or who had enough money to enter) we decided to put together a list of 12 British albums that we've enjoyed over the last 12 months. We don't care if they're big hitters such as PJ Harvey (who will probably be on the Mercury list) or smaller [...]

( email | facebook | twitter ) In an interview by More Than The Music , Her Name Is Calla's Sophie Green answers a handful of questions about gender and music. As always, she beguiles. Some highlights: - There are few things more awkward than when a stranger shakes hands with everyone in the band except me... ...in pop music, I hate when every female singer has to be pitted against each other... [...]

Her Name is Calla follow their excellent, if unsettling, debut, The Quiet Lamb , with the release of the double A-side vinyl single, Maw . Unusually, the title track, throws the listener into the climax of a galloping, pounding rock song, which burns with growing intensity. Clocking in at around a third of the length of Her Name is Calla's more symphonic tracks, Maw is a demonstration of a band enjoying and exploiting the dark ferocity of the shorter time span. The Beat That My Heart Skipped , on the [...]

What with the rate of knots at which contemporary musical seas ebb and flow, it's all too easy to be swept out to sea by the undertow of a record, only to be eventually washed ashore, exhausted, like splintered driftwood left out to dry in the blinding light of the latest beacons of hype. One such LP that enveloped and exhausted us just so late last year was The Quiet Lamb , a far from fruity, if succulent labour from Her Name Is Calla . Thankfully they now return with a new EP, entitled Maw. Whilst its backup [...]

http://hernameiscalla.bandcamp .com/ http://www.denovali.com/hernam eiscalla/ Just yesterday I mentioned a beautiful video for current Her Name is Calla tour-mates Birds of Passage, today is the turn of the headline act, there are three or four wonderful videos to be seen on the Interweb of their current tour, I've linked one below... It's been a busy twelve months for the band, following from last years stunning album 'The Quiet Lamb' is a three track 10" EP entitled 'Maw'. "Maw" shows a new side to Her Name is Calla, a pounding rock [...]

( email | facebook | twitter ) Just a hunch: you don't feel you have a firm grasp on Her Name is Calla. Are we right? Certainly the best example is The Quiet Lamb : the sonic assault likely throws you off, and the extended lowercase passages do. At times the compositions play as brassy and imbalanced, as is evidenced by the apocalyptic "Into the West." At others, the thing pulses with erudition, even refinement (read: "Thief"). Now take [...]

( email | facebook | twitter ) If you don't have a quixotic fixation with Leeds, England by now, you just haven't been paying attention. So this is a good chance to cram before the mid-term: six tracks, all excellent, including a rehearsal recording. "Into the West" was the present correspondent's number two track for 2011. "Pour More Oil" scored Patrick's top slot. This is what industry jargonists refer to as one helluva offer . Stream here, or name [...]

( email | facebook ) Putting the bow on this box (and, quite frankly, they've saved the best for last), is the 11-minute acoustic rock opera "Dreamlands." Stream it here , tonight and tomorrow only. Check back here for the full Maw 103 review, coming soon. Pre-order it on March 21, at the links below.

( email | facebook ) For a thing titled The Quiet Lamb , Her Name is Calla's 2010 LP behaved as precisely the opposite, exacting terrible violence on the world of independent music; burning the ships, tearing the gates from the hinges. The importance and size of this album was impossible to exaggerate: "Pour More Oil" was luscious and loud, a four-minute bath of strings and brass and voice, bookended by a minute of lowercase tension at beginning and end. "Condor and [...]

( email | facebook | linkedin ) It's never a slow news week in these parts: Seldom-seem kids Elbow have announced their fifth studio album, and a tour. Hat tip: Line of Best Fit . Hallelujah The Hills say, "As Myspace becomes an increasingly horrific travesty w/ each passing day we initiate our exodus. Bandcamp site up. Check it out." And you should listen. Here . 2010 breadwinners Her [...]

( email | facebook | linkedin ) Fifty tracks would have been more like it. So much great material has wound up on the editing room floor that it's downright painful to send this to press. But we've talked enough this year, so we'll send it to press anyway. Here they are, the top 25 songs of 2010. The list comes straight from the iPod, with no other modus or operandi. What an unbelievable year: [...]
