While traditional print media seems slowly to be going the way of the 8-track, we're happy to note that Spin Magazine is in the midst of celebrating its 25th Anniversary. As a way of celebrating the milestone, the influential music mag, which has seen its ups and downs over the years, has announced that they will be curating a series of live music shows that will take place from July 26 - 30 in the mag's hometown of New York City. The music marathon, which totals [...]
Peter Gabriel's "Don't Give Up" has become something of a standard, the original version (featuring a Kate Bush duet) still our favorite over the countless remakes, most notably the 2005 Bono/Alicia Keys take for a World Aids Day fundraiser. (There's even a tepid, mis-directed version recorded with Midway State and one Lady Gaga last year.) For his new June 22 collaborative concept album The Imagine Project , Herbie Hancock offers his own version with vocals from John Legend and Pink . As with all Hancock works, this one is exceedingly [...]

Filed under: Video , Exclusive Want a treat? When you watch the video for Herbie Hancock 's new version of 'Space Captain' featuring singer Susan Tedeschi and her husband, Derek Trucks , on guitar, watch the video. Heck, put the sound on mute. Yeah, strange thing to ask for a music video that really is only in-studio footage of the musicians playing together, especially one with such supremely talented musicians as this. But it's the looks on these musicians' faces as they play together [...]
Herbie Hancock has a little experience performing with talented artists. For one, the jazz legend used to back-up Miles Davis . If that doesn't begin and end an artist's reume, then I don't know what would. But Hancock's resume is about to add a few more references that could cement Hancock's reputation as one of the most respected collaborative musicians of our time. The Imagine Project is ten songs recorded in ten locations around the world. Though cultures and languages may differ, music remains universal in bringing people together and Hancock explores this theme throughout [...]

At this late date, you'd certainly be well justified in assuming that Paul McCartney — sorry... Sir Paul McCartney — has been given just about every honor that could conceivably be offered to any musician. As it turns out, though, you'd be wrong. The Library of Congress has just announced that their Gershwin Prize for Popular Song - only the third one they've given so far - will be presented to ol' Macca himself on June 2. The proceedings will entail a full-on all-star concert a la the Kennedy Center honors, to take place at - wait [...]

Toronto - The Toronto Jazz Festival lineup has been announced and its solid. This year blends exciting young talent with a number of old masters. It's interesting is to see some acts combining the old guard with the new generation. Jazz is a music built on tradition and continuity. The music of today is built by standing on the shoulders of the giants of yesterday. It's cool to see the baton being passed. Here's a sneak-peak: Stanley Clark Band featuring Hiromi - June 28 There is little doubt that bassist Stanley [...]

Sozzz for being slack this month, so much shit has been going on which is exciting but exhausting. Huge thanks to everyone who came down to the Death Strobe launch!! Let's just get some music happening. The latest C.O.M.B.i. record finally arrived for the second time after the first delivery was snapped in half :( so it's late but worth the wait. I really loved this track from How We Do In NYC, super stoked that it's out on its own for everyone's dancing pleasure. Huge peak-time disco mania. Eric is WAYYYY too good. [...]

After listening to Dam Funk album the past few weeks, and catching the dancealicious show at Ottobar, I kept thinking about Herbie Hancock. I got into Herbie after the Tibetan Freedom Festival back in 1996, and I think one of the main reasons his performance resonated with me was because I witnessed someone get struck by lightning during his show. But nonetheless, his set with the Headhunters was inspiring and I think I went home and dug into as many of his albums as I could get my hands on. Herbie Hancock ran the gamut of Jazz, Fusion [...]
Herbie Hancock – Chameleon Taken it all the way back to ‘75.

“It’s been a long time coming, but we’re working on the script right now,” former Academy Award nominated actor Don Cheadle told Parade magazine recently of the long-overdue Miles Davis biopic, which he was previously reported to star in. Cheadle’s update that the project is gaining momentum is newsworthy enough, but, as a YRB interview (via the Playlist ) with Erin Davis and Vince Wilburn, Jr., Davis’ son and nephew respectively, proves, the details are truly where it’s at: “Herbie Hancock’s going to score it and Don Cheadle’s directing and starring,” said [...]
