I've been a bit busy this week preparing for SXSW. I want to bring you the very best coverage I can (partying it up with Racheal Ray and The Hold Steady) so I've been lacking a bit on the writing this week. I'd like to attempt to make it up to you by putting together this list of mp3s from the SXSW website of bands playing at the festival. There are hundreds of songs available, and I've just gone through and chosen a few that I really like. In case you only have time for a few, I've put *'s [...]
The Pains of Being Pure At Heart The Pains of Being Pure at Heart ( Slumberland ) Pick a band, any band from Disc 1 of Rhino Records The Brit Box, their four cd set chronicling UK indie, shoegaze, and Brit pop, and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart will pretty much sound like that band. The Smiths, The Shop Assistants, Jesus and Mary Chain, The Sundays, and The Primitives all make valid reference points. Maybe not so much The Happy Mondays, Primal Scream, [...]
by kevin diamond We were lucky enough to catch up with Luke Temple , mastermind of Here We Go Magic , after his show Wendesday night at le poisson rouge . We asked him a few questions about his influences, repetition, and the glorry of recording to tape. QUIET COLOR: Why did you decide to play this album as a band instead of just a solo thing? LUKE TEMPLE: I recorded [...]
Neko Case - Middle Cyclone Neko Case's follow up to The Fox Confessor Brings the Flood was released this past Tuesday, March 3rd. So far I like what I hear, even if it is a little bit "more of the same" - check out the title track, "Middle Cyclone." Wavves - So Bored Really, really, really hot mics are the theme for Nathan Williams' studio project, Wavves . The irony is his tunes are probably better listened to lying on the couch, [...]

Mining 2009.sxsw.com, Vol. 6 And now an mp3 with a bit more H Y P E behind it... Here We Go Magic . The word on Luke Temple's folkrock band is that it recalls Paul Simon but not in an annoying Vampire Weekend kinda way. Maybe you like? Downloadable: Fangela (sxsw mp3) SXSW schedule is here . Myspace page is here . Western Vinyl is here . NPR story [...]
Tonight in Baltimore is another TAXLO event at the Talking Head with DJs Cullen Stalin, Simon Phoenix, Chris O and a performance by Triobelisk. Also in town are Longwave who play the Recher Theatre with OK Go and Oppenheimer. If that doesn't suit perhaps the Ottobar 's show for tonight will. They have Hipnotic Buddha, Matt Rocks, E. Joseph and the Phantom Hearts, and Gavin Elder. Down in DC the Red and the Black has a great show with one of my new favorites performing, Here We Go Magic. Callers and Typefighter open [...]

[Words and photos by Erez Avissar] Here We Go Magic 's self-titled debut finds the lo-fi sound of one man in his bedroom plucking away at acoustic guitars, "analog synths, a cassette 4-track, and his trusty SM-57 mic" (as his press release touts), but in their live state, they take the stage as a full five-piece. Together with Luke Temple , they played most of the deservedly blogged-about debut with Temple as the focal point, jumping between electric and acoustic guitars and a synth. [...]

The Depreciation Guild . Recently on the radar as related to recent Sync/Master subjects The Pains of Being Pure At Heart (their drummer is one half of Brooklyn duo The Depreciation Guild . Head to their homepage and click on the yellow bar ('Album') to get their album for free. Pay specific attention to Darklooming . Quite nice. For fans of M83 and Nintendo. Here We Go Magic . Here We Go Magic may just end up being that break-out band at SXSW 2009. Locals, you can see them in Bloomington next Wednesday, but The Laundromatinee gets a crack at them first. The band released a new, free single/download out to the internetz yesterday... Here We Go Magic (ft. Luke Temple) - Fangela Previous: Here We Go Magic - Tunnelvision [...]
Got this via Brooklyn Vegan . Here We Go Magic will be playing in New Orleans on March 22nd at LA Marigny Theater with the Callers. They are one of the better bands touring right now that will be coming through New Orleans, so I would definitely check them out if you get a chance; even though I am not too sure where that venue is. Click HERE to listen to the track. Here is the rest of their touring schedule: 03/07 Washington, DC The Red and The Black* 03/09 Pittsburgh, PA garfield [...]

OK. So maybe it's more like central Texas teardrops, but that's not a song. But yeah, your regular editors (Vince, Andrew, Matt) are not going to be at SXSW. We're over it, even if you may not be. We'll be in New York paying the bills at our day jobs. BUT. Contributing writer Lauren Mooney will be there writing for Pop Rock Candy Mountain , and we are dispatching rogue writer and musician Tim Emmerick to the scene to see what Texas beer tastes like. Our guess is: pretty fuckin' delicious. Yes, there are hundreds of bands [...]

The wooden sounds of Here We Go Magic have the most minor hints of warmth hidden in them, which is almost enough to distract from the eeriness that permeates the entire album. Self-described as a "lovely ruckus", Here We Go Magic have created a strange and beautiful album from "melodies that can turn from gorgeous to challenging to a little scary and back again". The band's own description sounds viable enough but couple that with a tip of the hat from indie-superstar, Sufjan Stevens , who has supposedly called the voice of lead maestro, Luke Temple [...]
