MyNameIsJohnMichael is a name you hear a lot around New Orleans these days. They play out a lot, they've got a ton of energy and are steadily building quite a vocal following. And as I found out when STATIC founder, aka Wesley, provided me with their album a few weeks back, the buzz is well deserved. For all of the great jazz, blues and hip hop that comes out of the city, there have been only a handful of bands in the past few decades that have taken to the rock scene and done it as well as MNIJM.

I first heard about Here We Go Magic last month when I ran into my friend as he quite litereally danced his way down the street in Williamsburg. People were staring, he paid them no mind . . . and I almost had to tackle the guy to get his attention. After he had dis-lodged his earphones from his head I asked him - "Seriously dude, what the hell are you listening to?" Instead of giving a straight answer he just started singing the chorus to "Fangala," the second track on HWGM's debut record. When I pressed him [...]

Words by Jonathan Clancy Here is a glimpse into the life of A Classic Education during our trip to NYC and SXSW. Most of the shots, at least the good ones are by Giulia. Apart from being in A Classic Education she is quite the ace photographer. You can check out her stuff on www.giuliamazza.com or if you want to see the bands she shot at the festival you can go here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/g iuliamazza/sets/72157616621901 029/ [...]
It's finally starting to happen outside, the summer season is slowly controlling the atmosphere around us. It's been an extremely warm and weather confidence-boosting three days; the kind where all day in the sunlight leaves your skin feeling sticky. Despite a potential swine flu outbreak, the summer still brings out shorts, sandals, bikinis, and bathing suits. Some will freckle, some will glow, and even more will be burnt. The fact it's been a lengthy three days of blistering sunshine forcing me to turn on the A/C (RIP Spring 2009), made me want to share three songs [...]

This show was about 1,000,000 years ago (a few weeks) in blog-time, but my card-reader was broken when I was going to put up the photos originally. I figure better late than never, though. Since it was so long ago, I'll just give a quick recap of a review. Here We Go Magic was good, but as Luke Temple said himself they're "a young band." Unfortunately, I'm afraid the qualities that I love about their self-titled album (its quiet, introspective feel) don't translate to a live setting. Especially a massive one like MHOW. The Antlers were incredible. I can't say [...]
by charles poladian After Coachella, it seems like everyone is trying to catch their breath. Another big festival is in the news, and there is always something brewing on the concert scene. There are also amazing new tracks from Major Lazer and Sonic Youth. The Major Lazer jam features Santogold and it's something otherworldly. So without further adieu, let's get on with the Reel!

[ img via ] In New York, the only way to make the humidity of the Summer bearable is to hit up free shows on the daily. Running between McCarren Pool, Central Park, the Southstreet Seaport and every other makeshift stage can get quite confusing - here's a list of what has been announced. MP3s reflect the artists playing. Right off the bat, I'm going to let you in that there's another free Black Moth Super Rainbow show this Summer. Animal Collective - Summertime Clothes Black Moth Super [...]

The schedule of free shows slated at the South Street Seaport is slowly starting to be released. Who can argue with a good, free, summer show, or ten? The seaport shows will start on June 13 with Children's Day, followed by the New York City Opera performing on June 27th. The shows we want to see won't start until July, with Here We Go Magic and Bachelorette performing on July 3, and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart , Black Moth Super Rainbow and [...]

Ah...this is a head's up kick to my ears courtesy of my co-worker Jason that sits just across the office from me. Now hear me out...my taste in music differs greatly from those that work around me. They are fans of Hall & Oates, any indie band that hasn't been formed yet, 311, and Lyle Lovett. Not too bad. But I get the stereotype as the light-hearted hippie due to my general love of bluegrass and singer-songwriters. All too often Jason and my other co-workers bring my "perfect" song to me to no avail as I find I can't stand [...]
Here are few bright young bands I've been listening to lately: I gave Here We Go Magic a try because I read some high praise for HWGM's frontman/vocalist, Luke Temple , from none other than Sufjan Stevens himself. Well, Sufjan was entirely right about that fine voice. "More Than Muscle" and "Where is Away" are a couple of Luke Temple's excellent solo songs. His sound is not quite folk and not quite twee, but borrows on both genres. I prefer his solo work to HWGM, however, on the grounds that the sound of [...]
Tuesday night I trekked over to Music Hall of Williamsburg to catch The Hymns, The Antlers and Here We Go Magic. I have to say, for me Hymns kind of stole the show and it's a shame more people weren't there early enough to see them. They're a New York band (by way of North Carolina and Texas), who play country-style rock. While they didn't always look 100% sure of themselves (maybe it was the
