I am obsessed with Here We Go Magic's self-titled new album. It is so beautiful that I want it to be playing in my ears 100% of the time. The songs "Tunnelvision" and "Fangela" have been flitting around the internet for a few months now, and I've definitely enjoyed them. But the nine songs on the album are such a perfect mix of lo-fi noise plus quiet, powerfully structured songs that they really only makes sense as one musical entity (an album). The project is mostly that of Luke Temple's, whom I had never heard of before this band, but [...]

Monday: Garotas Suecas @ Zebulon 9pm FREE Since dominating SXSW Garotas Suecas have been pleasing crowds across the States with their tropical brand of garage rock. The band bring a party everywhere they go and this will be their last show in the U.S. before heading back to Brazil. Lucky for us it's a free show, so get to see it 'cause who knows when they'll make their way back around here. Garotas Suecas - "Ghostwriter" Tuesday: Here We Go Magic + The Antlers @ Music Hall of Williamsburg 8pm [...]

Prins Thomas & Lindstrom are back with their second long player, imaginatively entitled 'II'. It's a bit spacier, bit kraut- ier , than their debut & will be a permanent fixture on your summer playlist . The record is due for release in Mid-May on Eskimo recordings. Lindstrom & Prins Thomas- Rothaus (Download) Here we go Magic's self titled debut suffer's from that most modern of phenomena's; Sounds great on your [...]

I'm going to get “ Bon Iver -ed” by this band, I just know it. Let me explain. When the clever recluse (aka Justin Vernon) wandered out of his log cabin and onto the indie scene, I was asked to give his album a listen and subsequently review it. As an indie reviewer, a lot of what we hear can be hit or miss. After listening to For Emma, Forever Ago , I swore I’d never mind a screaming baby on a 7 hour flight again. I was not a fan, I couldn’t write the review. Call [...]
by neil roberts [Editor's note: After some consistent feedback we've decided to preview the shows of the week for your reading pleasure. No longer can you say "I wish I would've known about that!" because we've got our QC show recommendations lined up like fourth graders at a water fountain.] Live Guide with Neil (week of April 1-7) is brought to you by Dan Deacon's Bromst, so you'll have to excuse my spokesmanship. It's an album that awakened [...]
We spend a lot of time at IGIF listening to music. Listening, listening, and listening. Sometimes just for a few seconds (before we press the "delete" key in iTunes), sometimes with one song on repeat over and over again until it's burned into our cochleas. It's a rare moment when a friend can recommend a band I haven't at least heard of (that's not bragging, seriously, it sucks). Occasionally I miss the boat by a few days, or a few months, and sometimes, like in the case with Luke Temple , I miss it by [...]

So with about 2 weeks left 'til my finals begin, all I can say at this point is that I'm nowhere near ready. And during these times, I'll ask God why he didn't bestow me with some tangible talent ; I think I would have been fairly happy with being a celebrity gossip blogger earning crazy cash or one of the extras on Slumdog Millionaire ( I would've fit in really well!) . Until then though, I would just have to study my ass off, although the stuff that I'm learning is thankfully [...]

For some reason this was my first chance to make it out to 529, and me likey. The sound is good for the space, and the TV video of the band in the bar room is a nice touch. Luke Templeton disclaimered the show by explaining he lost his voice at SXSW, so unfortunately the vocals were not up to par. But luckily, this act isn't so dependent on primary vocals, so it was still some great jams. They only played a small handful of songs, but each for very long. I was too exhausted from SXSW myself [...]
Luke Temple, a singer-songwriter from Salem, Massachusetts, has had marginal success with two full length records in the past, managing to earn a slot on Grey’s Anatomy, a career high for many acts. With his latest project Temple makes a dramatic change of course from his signature folk pop. Like many Brooklyn exports this year, the eponymous album from Here We Go Magic is predominately psychedelic and ethnically shaded. Essentially a bedroom album, Temple reportedly recorded the album at home using analog synths, a cassette 4-track, and a mic, creating an album that may not be [...]

Luke Temple and Here We Go Magic have steam rolled me , and I'm guessing quite a few of you too. They recently premiered a new song live on WOXY called "Surprise" (thanks to GvB ). This track reminds me of 60s era Dylan and Buffalo Springfield - similar to the track "Everything's Big" on their debut S/T LP. Here's the new one: mp3: Here We Go Magic - Surprise (Live on WOXY) Hey and guess what? They're playing tonight at the Ottobar here in [...]

MP3: Titus Andronicus - Titus Andronicus MP3: Here We Go Magic - Tunnelvision Do yourselves a favor and check out this show. Tonight, the Ottobar plays host to two noteworthy bands. Here We Go Magic deliver a mesmerizing brand of folk, their catalog full of growers ready-made for stargazing, drowning in melodies possessed of a mystical, shimmering quality and mastermind Luke Temple's lofty-yet-warm vocals. But [...]

Because I managed to be almost completely disconnected from the internet for the past week or so, here's an extensive recap of what I got myself into during SXSW. All non-Covert photos are linked for credit. I warmed up for a week of music by freezing my butt off at Psych Fest 2 on Friday night. I think all of us were a little surprised when we got to Radio Room and discovered that the stage was situated outside under a tent. I know some people left very quickly because of their disappointment with the venue, but we [...]

I absolutely fell in love with Brooklyn's Here We Go Magic in Austin last week. The band is the side project of talented musician Luke Temple. The debut album was released in February. As an example of what they sound like, check out this tripped-out video for the track "Tunnelvision".
Welcome back to Flashion Forward, a new UI feature in which we endeavor to explore the ever-expanding universe of sonic style. Each week, we’ll pluck a recently added interview from our warehouse of current clips and try to read between the artist’s sartorial lines. Today, we’re investigating the sweet, neat, petite Here We Go Magic. The newish band, conceived and born in the still respectably gritty Greenpoint, Brooklyn, has turned making do into an art form: their self-titled debut was recorded at home, in stream-of-consciousness writing/composing mode with their trusty, if not exactly high-tech, analog synths. The [...]

I don't know how we got sent this one but my are we lucky. Balmorhea , (pronounced bal-mor-ay) from Austin, is Rob Lowe (not that Rob Lowe) and Michael Muller, accompanied by Aisha Burns (violin), Travis Chapman (upright bass), Nicole Kern (cello), Michael Bell (drums). Now seems like a good time to promote them as they share the same record label - Western Vinyl - with the up and coming Here We Go Magic (as well as J. Tillman), who have been extensively blogged about all over the web. Balmorhea just [...]

(click to enlarge) After missing their show at the Mohawk on Wednesday because I flubbed the set time, I was glad to catch Here We Go Magic at Side Bar on Friday afternoon. They were one of just a handful of bands that I had made a point to go see (see also: Harlem Shakes, Wavves, Grizzly Bear), and Side Bar provided the perfect atmosphere for the band's weirdo psych folk. The place was packed with the stage set up on [...]

The beauty of SXSW is that at any given hour, there are so many contrasting options and events sprawled across the greater Austin metropolitan area that there's always something for everyone. Friday and Saturday certainly proved this, offering a perfect balance of stadium-sized swagger (Metallica and Echo and the Bunnymen at Stubb's), laid-back lounging under the sun (everything at the French Legation Museum), and nearly everything else in between. Don't believe us? Check out the following photo recap from Days 3 and 4 of SXSW 2009 and see for yourself, and make sure to stay tuned for our full SXSW [...]
