There's been a bit of a flurry of posts today, mainly because I'm getting things out of the way before heading off, so this will be the last post for the best part of two weeks. I'm going on holiday to Dorset, the first part of which will be spent at the second End of the Road Festival . Festival attendances this year have been non-existent for me, due to the arrival of the Baby Growl in June, but now she's just about old enough to appreciate her first festival (I think) and anyway if I had [...]

ONE Buy your Kate Nash tickets tomorrow at noon . She plays Joe's Pub on September 25th. Kate Nash is the next hot girl singer out of the UK. She epitomizes anti-folk with her lazy strums on the guitar and lyrics that look dumb on paper but actually sound earnest on record. However, the twist is that she also sings behind a few well-produced beats that flip the whole folk-singer thing on its head. DOWNLOAD [...]

During my hiatus, I spent a lot of time spinning Herman Düne . I had never heard of the France-based Swedes and Swiss before a friend gave me a copy of their album Not On Top at the Clap Your Hands show last month. Since then I've been loving their vocals-driven folk-based multi-instrumental sound. While they're new to me, they've been cranking out their brand of folk pop since 2000. They just haven't established a foothold in the American indie scene (despite living in NYC for a period of time). I [...]
About a month ago my friend Ofer recommended that I check out Herman Düne , which turned out to be a really confusing name to research. At first I thought that it was one guy but found out that Herman Düne is actually three: David Herman Düne, André Herman Düne, and Neman Herman Düne. David, also known as Ya Ya, does most of the singing. The band has roots in Sweden and New York but probably has their biggest following in France. Herman Düne makes anti-folk similar to the big band sound of [...]

I didn't even know it was in the cards for this year, but Songs:Illionis recently pointed out that there was a new Herman Dune record coming out next month. Giant , the follow-up to last year's splendid Not On Top , is out Oct. 15th on French label Source-Etc . I'm not sure that my mind can yet process a slickly-produced Herman Dune, but I'ma keep these mp3s on repeat, so I can start getting used to it. ::: Herman Dune - I Wish [...]
Herman Dune - "I Wish That I Could See You Soon". Herman Dune's new album is made with major label lucre: horn section, expensive studio, backup singers. But it's also made with familiar stuff: tambourine jangle, sneaker squeak, rhymes like high-fives. "I Wish That I Could See You Soon" hides nothing. It's about wishing that I could see you soon. It's about seeing a photograph and hearing trumpets; it's about talking to yourself; it's about wanting, wanting, wanting; about there being no way to say and nothing you can do. Part of me wants to rerecord it at half-speed, just [...]

This may be the best song of the year. Herman Dune's ( here , here ) new record, Giant , comes out on Oct 15 on the new label Source-Etc. They had a budget this time and time to work some magic in the studio. Listen to the female backing vocals (courtesy of "The Woo Woos"), an honest to goodness horn section, lines like "if you find a new boy to spoon" and "and I'm like, well...the sooner the better" and the way the instruments interact in the mix (the [...]

I have to interrupt this 80's marathon with the best song of the year. Sorry. Herman Dune's new record, Giant , comes out on Oct 15 on the new label Source-Etc. Listen to the female backing vocals (courtesy of "The Woo Woos"), an honest to goodness horn section, lines like "if you find a new boy to spoon" and "and I'm like, well...the sooner the better" and the way the instruments interact in the mix (the album [...]
