The city of Manchester, in Lancashire, England, is an essential stop for any music lover visiting the United Kingdom.
Poor Keanu Reeves. He'll never play a character that's better than Ted Theodore Logan (well maybe Neo ... maybe), he spends his life being stalked by cameras, and even with all his big movie star money, all he has for lunch is a dumb sandwich. No wonder he's so sad. In a popular series of photos , we see Reeves sitting on a bench, resting his wrists on his knees with a look of utter dejection on his face. In his hand is a piece of sandwich. The next photo depicts Reeves looking at the piece [...]

Pretty much every band around in the mid-1960s got around to cutting a "psychedelic" album or two, that is, if the band lasted long enough. The Byrds got freaky with "Eight Miles High" and the Beatles blew everybody's mind with Revolver , and everyone followed suit. Today we are going to take a look at some latter-period work from British Invasion bands that followed in the footsteps of the Fab Four. If they lasted long enough to reach 1967-1970, pretty much everyone of that era had to cut their own druggy tunes for better or worse. [...]
Music is about making noise kind of by definition, so the number of songs extolling the virtues of silence is surprising. In truth, the only sonically accurate piece about silence is John Cage's 4'33"…but it's hard to find covers of that one that differ much from than the original, for obvious reasons. If you're unfamiliar with the piece, go get educated, then come back and listen to some

Herman's Hermits was an internationally successful 60s British rock band, from Manchester, England, formed in 1963. Part of the British Invasion, their trademark simple, non-threatening, clean-cut "boys next door" image made them easier to listen to and more accessible than other British Invasion bands. I've made many bad decisions in my life (usually involving proper dental care), but the one I'm currently regretting most was choosing to include this bit of music hall fare repurposed as British Invasion pop... Herman's Hermits - I'm Henry VIII, I Am (from The Very Best of Herman's Hermits , 2001) ...on a three-disc compilation of 50's and 60's tunes I assembled for Maura a few years back. I found the set up in the attic when I was looking for our copy of Total Coelo's greatest [...]
. The iPod Shuffle function is very useful in bringing to the listener's notice songs that have bypassed them. Of course, there is always the temptation when being confronted with a song one is not in the mood for to skip subsequent tracks, thereby compromising the arbitrary purpose of the random shuffle. And sometimes iPod comes up with a fantastic sequence, as it did this morning, compelling me
