* Cleveland hot dog joint and local music hot spot, The Happy Dog, has launched a new Kickstarter to record and release a live album by the classical music group, Ensemble HD , a collection of Cleveland Orchestra musicians and their friends. The goal of $15,000 may be on the ambitious side, but so is the mission of Ensemble HD. How many other classical troupes have regular gigs at rock clubs? That's a rhetorical question. * In the past couple years, Cleveland musicians Nick Tolar and Tony Vorrell have seen their profile rise thanks to their work [...]

Hey cool kids, I'm back with another post from my Tuff Fest series. Simul-posted here: The Movie Advocate Fitzcarraldo is an impossibly large movie. It is up there, and maybe surpasses, well known classic epics like Ben Hur, Cleopatra, or the Ten Commandments. Part of me doesn't want to spoil seeing one of the most unbelievable things ever dedicated to film, but that one thing happens to be the main selling [...]
The 2012 edition of WRUW's long-running, free music festival, Studio-A-Rama, will have an even more distinct Cleveland flavor this year as at the top of the bill will see local buzz-band done good, Cloud Nothings, paired with the classic Clevo, post-punk band, Death of Samantha. If you haven't noticed, Cloud Nothings have been pretty much everywhere in 2012. They've done the late night circuit, the festival circuit, and played a free show at the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame earlier this summer, earning plenty of raves along the way. Death of Samantha, meanwhile, [...]
Well, color me rocked. Local buzzband Cloud Nothings (July 11th) and Southern heavies, Torche (July 25th) are just two of the headliners announced for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's free Summer in the City concert series. The experimental indie-rock band, Bear in Heaven and Cleveland alt-rockers Mr. Gnome will share headline spot on the third night, August 1st, and folk artist, Sharon Van Etten will round out schedule on August 22nd. Additionally, local openers have been paired with touring bands for all four concerts. The pairing of Herzog and Cloud Nothings will provide an especially appealing [...]
Filed under: Monthly Mixtape Flickr March is over. The trees are budding early, the flowers are blooming into a bounty of spring colors, Valdimir Putin is the president of Russia again, Rush Limbaugh called a respectable human being a "slut" and the earth ticks ever closer to the end of times. So what better way to await the arrival of the alien drone destroyers than this kick-ass mixtape. After you buy extra water and batteries, unplug [...]

It's time to check out a bunch of the tracks I have not posted recently. These are just a few of the songs that would get their own individual posts here on GIMME TINNITUS if I only had the time. There is plenty of cynical negativity threaded throughout Herzog 's catchy but combustible second record, Cartoon Violence . It's an album filled with uneasy sentiments which make plain the harsh realities that have been brought on by the current recession; grim points that hit even harder now that nearly three years have passed since the band's debut was released. While the lyrics of the record are written by Herzog's official fifth (non-playing) member, wordsmith Tony Vorell, the Cleveland quartet perfectly match the volatility of his abrasive words with the boundless, energetic spirit [...]
In addition to Defend Music Night , the event taking place across ten venues on Friday, organized to raise awareness about The Cleveland Music Club Coalition's ongoing negotiations with the city to alter their 8% admissions tax, there are two big release shows also happening this weekend. On Friday night, Cleveland singer-songwriter, and legend to many in the scene, Bill Fox will be playing selections from his latest CD, One Thought Revealed at The Happy Dog . Herzog will headline. And on Saturday, Cleveland's finest indie pop collective, Bears , will be doing [...]

Hey Cleveland! Instead of going out the night before Thanksgiving and getting blitzed at some bar with your buds, why don't you go out, get blitzed at a bar with your buds and take in some Cleveland Rock 'N' Roll. You do have three quality events to choose from. There's This Way Out's Anniversary Party at the Beachland Tavern with Filmstrip, Village Bicycle, and 45 Spider. While on the West Side there's a free show at Now That's Class with Cobra Verde, Founding Fathers and Exploding Lies, and the Herzog [...]

Herzog Cartoon Violence Exit Stencil Too often when talent is used to describe an indie rock band there's a catch. As in, they're a talented band, but they're too cute and too obtuse for their own good. Or, they're a talented band with a disdain of conformity and a similar disdain of melody. Or, they're a talented band, why the fuck can't they write one damn song I can hang my hat on. Cleveland's Herzog are a talented band of another type. In their case, talent means understanding. They [...]

Seeking to prove they're more than another band of '90s revivalists raised on slacker rock, Cleveland's Herzog have prepped a sophomore album that's bigger, brawnier, and brainier than their well-received 2009 debut, Search. Part of the genesis can be traced to the fact that more than ever, Herzog are a band and not just a vehicle for songwriter Tony Vorrell and lead singer/guitarist Nick Tolar. The rhythm section of Brian Hill and Dan Price, who also add heft to local, stoner-rock act, Megachurch, give songs like "Fuck This Year," a much fuller sound while not sacrificing the pop hooks which [...]

Herzog's songs are more home movie than worldly documentary, but they're also tuneful enough that this doesn't really matter. For the indie minded individual, a band named "Herzog" may immediately bring to mind German filmmaker Werner Herzog, and set speculations soaring over the possibility of a musical equivalent to Herzog's films. Herzog, formed in Cincinnati, by Nick Tolar, is not that band. True, film references do spice up Herzog's otherwise unremarkable lyrics: "Paul Blart and the Death of Art" contemplates whether an in-flight movie will be the last one the protagonist ever sees, while...
