Another top night put on by Baba Yaga’s Hut, they really are putting on some mind melting gigs so my advice would be to get down to Elephant and Castle at the next opportunity and fill your brain with trippy wonder. By Richard Collins

Last month I harped on about how I was sticking with grim stuff because it was still dark and cold out, and not quite spring, and brighter sounds are for brighter days. Well, it seems we've been stuck into an extended chill, so allow me to continue with the pounding and the squawking and general unsettling vibes. There is some swagger though, so that's something. The swagger comes in the form of London/Scummerset sexytet Hey Colossus . Cuckoo Live Life Like Cuckoo is their eighth LP, and earmarks a fascinating stage in the [...]

Hi everybody. I'm glad you could all make it. Welcome to the annual "Best Albums Of..." post, which is usually the time I put effort into composing a blog entry. In 2005 I wrote small blurbs about the top twenty-five albums of the year. In 2006 I wrote three-word reviews for the 50 best records of the year. Last year I went so far as to craft a complete sentence for my favorite 100 albums of 2007. This year...I don't know, I haven't started the list yet. I think I'm just going to write blurbs about the albums for which [...]

I'm sorry this post is late. I just returned home from a delicious wine and cheese party. Well, it began as a wine and cheese party, and it devolved into a two-house "boys night" and "girl's night". Imagine a middle school dance with opposing sexes clinging to different walls, but instead of walls we clung to living rooms of adjacent houses. The men drank beers and started a Wii bowling competition, and the women listened to Indigo Girls and fingered each other...or whatever it is women do when they hang out together. [...]

Welcome to the end of the weekend. I don't have anything to write about, so instead I'll show you a very quick video. A couple years ago I showed up at a birthday party with Ken and Z. I didn't know anybody else there. I did not know the kid whose birthday it was. But, for some reason, I felt obligated to stand up during his birthday toast and say a few words about him. I don't remember why, but I guess it was pretty funny. Anyway, here's video footage of the short speech I gave (I'm not the first [...]

65. the ocean - 'precambrian' The scope of 'Precambrian' is simply staggering. An ambitious double album (comprised of a mini-CD, 'hadean/archaean' and a "full" disc, 'proterozoic'), entirely conceptualized (and metaphorized, too) around the creation of the Earth, created by a band that's not even a band, but an open collective of musicians (their official name is actually The Ocean Collective), how's that for starters? By all this you might expect a dreamy, drawn out record with 20-minute songs, but that's where the Berliners surprise you. The music that bellows forth from their [...]
For all the gentiles who enjoyed their fancy holiday dinners this evening, I ask that you please enjoy this hollow chocolate Easter bunny of songs. Consider it penance for my people killing your savior all those years ago. What do you say...Truce? RULES for uninitiated noobs : With 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods or Zunes or Kingklangs or whatever the industry is currently pushing on you. Sometimes there will be themes that link all the songs together, other times I'll just throw songs at [...]
