The Twilight Sad Kilsyth's finest sons are all set to release their much anticipated third album (proper), No One Can Ever Know, next month. Having heard the album I reckon it's going to take a lot of folk by surprise with the new direction they've taken. As a wee teaser of what to expect, you can download Another Bed from it for free via both the Skinny and Spin . Aloha Tigers! My good friend Ian, who used to run the blog Have Fun At Dinner has set [...]

At the top of my most anticipated release list for 2012 sits Hey Marseilles's sophomore album due out this winter. They released Elegy, a 7", a few months ago that has been staring at me longingly waiting for the installation of a turntable. I had the chance to tell the band how immediately taken I was with "Cafe Lights" when I heard it live this fall. While the lyrics tug at my heart strings a bit, it's that ending crescendo that I anxiously wait for during every listen. Stream/Buy on Bandcamp [...]

A friend just sent me this orchestral pop/folk hybrid track from Seattle's Hey Marseilles, and I must say I dig. The strings are really, really well done- even though there are about a million things going on here, it doesn't sound overdone, just full. And the vocalist sounds a liiiiittle bit like Colin Meloy (The Decemberists), which isn't unwelcome either. Nice! Mp3: Hey Marseilles- Elegy
Yeah 2011 was great and there are so many albums to choose from for a year end list blah, blah, blah...What if I told you that I'm just really excited for First Aid Kit, Pickwick, Anna Ternheim and the ever wonderful Hey Marseilles albums coming out in 2012? Because that's all I can think about these days. Here's a fantastic video session with Hey Marseilles performing "Elegy" off their just released 7" which you should definitely buy because the B side might be even better. Is is too early to say cheers to 2012? [...]

I entered the studio at about 9:35pm, meeting up with Stuarto, who has the time slot before mine. A quick interview about 15 minutes before my show, another few songs, and I was up. It was requested that I attempt a transition, and as indie music is my theme, and world music is his, I figured I'd kick things off with an oldie, but goodie: "The Gulag Orkestar" by Beirut. The theme of the evening, loosely, centered around folk. Indie folk, folk pop, folk rock, orchestral folk, experimental folk... [...]

View of Doe Bay, home of Doe Bay Fest Words // Adam Sharp I'm not sure if you've noticed lately, but there's something insane happening out in the Pacific Northwest. Out amongst the pines and the terrain where rain comes from is one of the most vibrant and diverse music scenes going, with everything from folk to hip hop finding a place to grow and evolve. I spent a weekend out there last month at a small, amazing music festival called Doe Bay Fest [...]
Fuck, it's cold this winter. I use the expletive because it really is bloody fucking cold here this year. I know this because I bought a new coat last year that I reckon I only wore three times. This year that beautiful gorgeous smoky-grey fitted lifeline has never left my side. Or my back. I need sunshine and warmth and blue sky and usually in this neck of the woods the days may start frosty but burst into full sun by 10am. This winter though the heavens remain stubbornly grey and gloomy. And the wind! It's [...]

This morning, my car sits packed to its dear 2001 Sentra gills. I am heading off into the southwestern climes of the United States, across six states with my seven year-old, a stack of good music and audiobooks, and a hankering for the open road. We'll hit Mesa Verde, see family in Phoenix, sun in San Diego, attend a Dodgers-Padres game (so I can teach him to properly boo LA), camp along the north rim of the Grand Canyon, and stay in various KOA cabins along the way. We plan on s'mores and stargazing, and maybe finding a swimming hole [...]
KEXP Concert at the Mural ::: photo by Josh Lovseth Since the weather's not cooperating, we're going to have to take cues from other places to remind us it is, in fact, summer. Things like a partial peek at KEXP's always excellent free summer concert series at the Mural Amphitheater during the month of August. There's [...]
Hey Marseilles ::: photo by Josh Lovseth Here it is friends, the final Doe Bay Session from 2010. We'll have a whole new series of Sessions come fall from this August's Doe Bay Fest, but we hope you've enjoyed our inaugural series as much as we have. Last but certainly not least, our final session was [...]
The Maldives ::: photo by Abbey Simmons The truth is, we all have day jobs (or are unemployed) and few things sound better on a sunny summer day than escaping the office (or the pile of job applications) for the great outdoors and some good tunes. If you happen to work (or are attempting to get [...]
![[Introducing] – Typhoon](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3336091_lg.jpg)
Today's Introduction piece comes from Sam over at the excellent-yet-under-appreciate d Middle Class White Noise blog. Subscribe to his blog and follow him on Twitter . "Restrained grandeur" is the best combination of words I can think of to describe Typhoon's sound. This is a band that played SXSW in a church. While that's not especially rare, it's altogether very fitting for them. Typhoon is made up of anywhere from 7 to 17 members, all centered around frontman Kyle Morton and his grounded songwriting. Morton's vocals are fairly timid, but they carry a desperate earnestness [...]

Hey Marseilles apparently knows how to get straight to my heart. Starting with some hand claps, going into strums, violin, piano, and eventually breaking out into full band? It's like a summer salad that's topped with every single thing you could possibly want from the salad bar. This song is definitely going to make it on some driving-to-work playlists. Spotted at Fuel/Friends . On the way I will go Where the days left to breathe Are not gone, are still long [...]

I'm freshly home from the radiant heat of Austin, feeling simultaneously drained and energized, emptied and full. As I drove home from the airport today on a suddenly warm spring day, all the windows in the car open and the plains wide around me, I played this song on repeat for about an hour (because I do that). For as many times as I have heard this song, it hit me fresh today; it sums up everything I am feeling right now, a celebration of long days left to breathe and breathe deeply. It explodes with an [...]
