The west-coast trio of Ashleigh Ball, David Beckingham, and David Vertesi (otherwise known as Hey Ocean!) released their sophomore LP "It's Easier To Be Somebody Else" in September of 2008. The album, described by the band as "funked up party-pop", follows-up on the group's 2006 debut effort "Stop Looking Like Music"'; today's song Fish can be found on the former release. After spending much of 2009 touring in support of the latest album, Hey Ocean! is poised to start 2010 with a splash (that wasn't intentional; I'm better than that; I'm also leaving it) by joining the already [...]

On November 28th, Hey Ocean! came by for Bands Undone and sang three amazing acoustic tracks. This time it was just the two members of the band that came. Ashleigh Ball on vocals David Beckingham on guitar Both were amazing singing acoustic and it was a great intimate session. The songs they sang were Liar, Alleyway and a song title which I forgot. Also in attendance was the members of apt613 who [...]

Hey Ocean! played songs of their new album plus some goof ball covers to a very entertained and interactive audience in NYC's Lower East Side.

Happy Friday people! It's been a hectic couple of days as the flow of email here at POP Stereo HQ has been insane. If you've read this blog recently, and I hope you have, you'll no doubt have noticed that the number of daily posts have increased to two or three. This is due to the influx of great material that has been sent our way. I've also been sorting through this folder of older email. Within that folder are quite a number of things I meant to post but apparently never got around to. As [...]

Ashleigh Ball of Vancouver's Hey Ocean! has got one of the sweetest voices I've ever heard. In my mind she's one of those girls who could say anything, doesn't matter what, and it would immediately cheer you up on a bad day. So take that voice and pin it to an 15 track album that's got the feel of a trendy jazz club on the side of a beach on a summer afternoon and you've got a hell of a feel-good album. Hey Ocean!'s It's Easier To Be Somebody Else is exactly that. Vocals with a [...]

Thirty seconds is all you'll need to believe in the tragedy-turned-majesty of 'All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone', Explosions In The Sky's long-awaited fourth album. The hands-over-your-face, drop-to-your-knees opening track is only the beginning of the dominating brilliance of this record. Recorded by John Congleton (The Roots, The Mountain Goats) at Pachyderm Studios in rural Minnesota, the album is a massive leap forward, showcasing a broader instrumental range and their most focused, efficient songwriting to date.

Hey Ocean! are just fun. A colorful blend of pop and funk with a bit of mischievous flavor dashed in, this four-piece group of energy are starting to make a splash (obvious pun not intended), and with a slot at this year's SXSW, you're sure to be hearing much more of them in the near future. As of late they are working extra hard on touring and making as much music as possible in the hopes of
