Today the short list of the nominees for this year's Polaris prize were announced. There has been a lot of discussion today surrounding the displeasure of the repeat nominees, and to those I say - can't we all just get along and celebrate that we have a chance to showcase some FANTASTIC Canadian music!!!!! Get over it there is no shortage of talent on this list. Are they the best of the year? That is a different answer for everybody, but this is the list supported by the votes of a very large number of our Canadian music media. [...]

Part 1 was written yesterday. Since I have to fill in for a few writers, I'm going to have to rush this. Without wasting any time: Tim Hecker - An Imaginary Country 100 years Ago by Tim Hecker Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Now THIS belongs on the Polaris Prize nomination list. I love it. Wall of sound hits the right nerves, abstract and trippy - yet freaking awesome. Time to get a review copy . [...]

Last week I was going to post about my predictions for what will end up on the Polaris Music Prize Long List this year, and I'm glad I didn't. With hindsight, after seeing the long list, I realized that there's a lot I couldn't possibly account for when 190 judges are having their say, and only a handful regularly contribute to the online discussion group set up for us. It's a pretty diverse list, more so than last year's, which should make choosing the 10 that will end up on the short list that much more [...]

This video for my favourite song by Hey Rosetta! is just gorgeous. Filmed in one of the band member's houses, lead singer Tim Baker moves from room to room with his guitar, linking up with fellow band members until the stunning grand finale with the full band squeezed into the loungeroom. Beautiful. There's An Arc - Hey Rosetta! Posted in Leftovers Tagged: Hey Rosetta!, mp3, Music, video

With our California vacation coming to an end, Julie and I found ourselves too sun burnt to leave the condo yesterday. Somehow we decided that recording a music video would be an appropriate way to spend the afternoon. Feel more than welcome to check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =FPSd3ow-TKc The band behind today's post, Hey Rosetta! , is a six-piece Canadian indie-rock/pop act hailing from the always balmy St John's, Newfoundland. A Thousand Suns can be found on the band's second full-length album Into Your Lungs (and around in your heart and on [...]

Virgin Mobile Festival (Canada) While we are still awaiting an announcement regarding the fate of the US Virgin Mobile Festival , our neighbor to the north has committed to hosting 5 "Vrigin Mobile Festival" events this year, two of which have already announced dates and initial lineups. Any way you look at it, the lineup for the two day Montreal Virgin Festival is weak, the just announced lineup for the one day Halifax Virgin Festival looks pretty promising though. Check out all the details below, [...]

Canadian sextet Hey Rosetta! mixes strings with U2 guitar lines, and those those two elements buld upon each other quite well. Into Your Lungs ((and around in your heart and on through your blood) sounds big, but not overpowering. This album is a grower, a sleeping giant that needs a couple of spins to wake up. For Handshake The Gangster singer Tim Baker adopts the perspective a mafia gun men with a conscience, Holy Shit (What A Relief) channels Radiohead for the vocals and Pink Floyd for the lonesome [...]

Hooray for the short turnaround contest! I asked the good folks at Against The Grain if they had anything for me to give away in the next little while in the way of concert passes, and indeed they did - all over the next week! So rather than divvy them up and dole them out individually, I'm just going to lump them all together and let you have at them all at once. Here we go. And if you find yourself complaining you've got nothing to do this week, don't blame me. [...]

"...and I wanted to get you smiling." It used to take much more than just an e-mail. Maybe it was the punctuated band name that caused my attention and/or interest to be heightened. Canadian six-piece Hey Rosetta! have apparently been at it longer than I care to admit...me and my blind eye have been missing out. They been listened to and written about at length long before I was enlightened. Two years after the release of the Plan Your Escape EP [...]

Toronto – If you've never heard of Hey Rosetta!, I strongly suggest you head over to their website or myspace page to listen to some of their music. I don't just rant and rave about them because they hail from the Mudderland (also known as Newfoundland, which is also known as the best place in the world), but that they play a kind of rock that hasn't made me this excited in a long time. Their music is a contradiction between simple and complex. Their [...]

Hey Rosetta! at Piano's (03/04/09) Photos : Jon Klemm After watching the serene Marissa Nadler at Joe's Pub on Wednesday of last week (March 4) I was ready to rock out a little, so I decided to check out Canadian sextet, Hey Rosetta! , who were playing the late show at Piano's. Their set was short, but tight and full of energy, so I was glad I made the effort to be there. Though there are no US dates [...]

As you can see from the above flyer, Newfoundland's Hey Rosetta! are in town now to play a couple of local gigs. If you're not busy tonight (March 4), I recommend heading over to Piano's to check them out, or if you can't make that, tomorrow they'll be at the Trash Bar in Brooklyn. I could have sworn I'd written about Hey Rosetta! before in my CMJ coverage, but a quick search of my blog tells me that I haven't done so (at least not specifically). Anywho, Hey Rosetta!'s [...]

This band just entered my radar. From Fredericton (New Brunswick) comes the 5-piece band The Slate Pacific . Centered around principal songwriter Logan Hawkes, we've got something here that hits a nice balance between moody folk and noisey indie rock. They've been doing some dates in the East Coast with Dog Day, Hey Rosetta! and Wintersleep in the past, more dates in March ( myspace ). Their debut EP ( Safe Passage ) will be out at the end of that month on Forward Music . Here's a taste, Jenn's Not Going To [...]

Howdy folks & apologies for (a) busting in on Mr. Toad's podcast post, & (b) being late. Again. There's a very good reason for that, namely I've been busting my orbs getting stuff & nonsense sorted out ready for our new station premiere — which, frustratingly, I still can't say anything about. All I can say is it's happening very soon indeed. One of the things I've been doing, sleeplessly, for the past week, is giving TWRHQ a bit of a tart up creating & adding new graphics, links, & [...]

Last month I wrote about the recent Hey Rosetta gig in Melbourne and their album Into Your Lungs (And Around In Your Heart And On Through Your Blood) has been getting some serious spin here these last few weeks. The other night I was flicking channels on the telly and came across a familiar song playing over the end credits of a TV show I hadn't seen before (the show was Flashpoint I discovered later). I picked the song straight away though - it was 'We Made A Pact' by Hey [...]

The night before the much lauded Frightened Rabbit performance, Elspeth and I and our friend Pedro headed to the same venue, the Northcote Social Club. Going by the name, we were expecting an RSL type venue, with pokies and a bistro and stuff, but it is actually a really well set up pub, with a bar in the front, a beer garden out the back and a seperate band room which is fairly small, but can easily accommodate a few hundred people. We had come to check out Aussie indie rock/folk five-piece Dead Letter Chorus , who [...]

It's Christmas Eve and the festive-booze is about to start flowing. The next few days are likely to be packed, so I thought I'd better get the second part of my favourite Canadian songs of 2008 done before the holiday fun starts. If you missed part 1, here it is . Otherwise, on to the second half. Once again, these songs are arranged in a mixtape order that I found pleasing ( download the whole thing in a zip file here ): Human Highway - The Sound ( Moody Motorcycle [...]
Editor's note: So I lied. I had intended that this post would be the last in my series of "2008 List" posts. But when I was starting to put together my remaining posts and lists, my song list was the one that I was most interested in drafting. As a result, it's the one that's done and ready to go. And, because I'm as impatient a person as I've ever known, I'm just gonna go ahead and post it.
