Will Schwartz has been singing memorable hooks since the first term of the Clinton Administration, first with indie rockers Imperial Teen , then in the dance-pop duo Hey Willpower (and then again with Imperial Teen when they re-emerged in 2007). He's taken to the keyboards for his new project Psychic Friend , a trio that sees him teaming up with drummer Patty Schemel (Hole) and producer/engineer Bo Boddie. Their first single, the vaguely glammy "Once a Servant," bounces like a Super Ball (remember those?), and it a lot easier to catch. Sticky. ||| Download: [...]

OK, it's guilty pleasure music, but so what? Hey Willpower make funky, electropop confections on their debut release, P.D.A. The band includes Will Schwartz of Imperial Teen, another band I consider a guilty pleasure, so I guess this isn't surprising,...

Looking through the very first big week of album releases, I can't help but feel completely overwhelmed by all of it. Not only are we graced with new music from more well-known names, but there is just as much quality here from some names that may not exactly be on everyone's radar. Of course, we have Cat Power's second covers album, Jukebox , along with the latest effort from Drive-By Truckers, Brighter Than Creation's Dark - both of which are names that surely jump to mind right off the bat. I've only listened to [...]

Does this make you happy? Dr. Cliff Arnall is the researcher from Cardiff University who has made his name identifying Blue Monday, " the most depressing day of the year ." (OK, It's not exactly splitting the atom or pasteurizing milk, but let's give Professor Cliff his fifteen minutes here.) We'll skip his formulas (weather, failed new years resolutions - what, already?), flow charts and graphs, and get right to it - the third Monday of each January is the date he's come up with. That, of [...]
It's that time again. Here's a stack of tracks to give your weekend some much-needed musical newness: The OaKs "Masood" Telenovela Star "Antonio's Home" Decomposure "Hour 1" "Hour 2" Languis & Fer Chloca "The Sky Below" Ammoncontact "Chord (Parts 1 & 2)" [...]
Chicago musician James Eric has accomplished quite a bit in recent years. Self-releasing four albums, as well as producing, editing, and composing the score for Meet The Monkeys a documentary directed by Collin Souter which focuses on the importance of arts education in elementary schools, and the positive effect that a non-for-profit theater company has on the Chicago community. In October he released a greatest hits album entitled, Tonight The Moon , and the album is a great introduction to James' music for those who have not heard his previous albums. James also [...]
Hey Willpower's full-length debut, P.D.A. (Tomlab), which has gone unreleased in North America until now - when it hits the streets on Jan. 22, 2008. The US edition features a revamped sequence, all new artwork, and the addition of their sugar-high cover of Architecture in Helsinki's underground hit "Heart it Races". The band will be touring the US in the Spring of 08, including several appearances at SXSW in March. audio: In The Basement video: Double Fantasy [...]

Hey Willpower released a fantastic electro-pop album called P.D.A. last year through Tomlab , - one of my top 10 of 2006, if I remember correctly. The album was never released in USA, but in january 2008 the Americans will be able to get a new version of this fine album. The US version will have one extra track, new cover-art and a different track sequence. The extra track is a cover of Architecture in Helsinki's "Heart It Races". The band will be touring the US in the Spring of 08, including several appearances [...]

The esteemed Avery over at DeliSF recently reminded me (by way of the weekend notes post) that I need to be listening to more Hey Willpower. Unendingly danceable songs from this local (SF) band are the norm, and it looks like we'll soon get more as their new LP will be dropping on tomlab in October. That's good news. Here's some tracks. ::: Hey Willpower - Hundredaire ::: Hey Willpower - Chewing Gum (feat. Annie) [ Hey Willpower official website .] [ Hey [...]

The Virgins - Love is Colder than Death I think the bass lines in a of songs are incredibly simple and incredibly catchy. They have these little flourishes to them and change-ups during the songs, like in this one where the rest of the music drops out and it's just a double-time bass. Myspace Moving Units - Crash N' Burn Victim I was a fan of their debut album a couple years back, and if this song is representative of their new [...]

Time Machine - Michael T Rae Did I make a mistake? Well, today I have a letter clearly asking me to follow the President's assertion of executive privilege and not disclose anything about it. It would be unfair to let accountability keep me in constant fear of being hauled before various committees to discuss my decisions. My readers would be ill served. Again, I have a letter that has asked me to follow the President's assertion of executive privilege and I'm doing [...]
