With tonight's Bassnectar and Limp Bizkit shows sold out, and John Medeski's World Cafe Live show postponed until next December, it makes tonight's pick pretty easy. Chicago’s folk hero Joe Pug plays a 21+ show at Johnny Brenda’s tonight, along with one of our most favorite local singer-songwriters Hezekiah Jones . Joe Pug plays a brand of folk with a Dylanesque focus on lyrical content, and Hezekiah Jones has his own unique style of story-telling. Go here for tickets to the show. Below, download Pug's In The Meantime EP for free.
Below is a live performance video featuring one of our favorite folk artists Hezekiah Jones performing "Cannonball" off his 2011 LP Have You Seen Our New Fort? (Yer Bird). The footage was captured by the kind folks at Sofar Sounds Philly on Novemeber 17, 2012. If you'd like to attend or host one of Sofar's intimate, secret showcases, feel free to get in touch with their local branch at phillysofar@gmail.com. (Photo by Lisa Schaffer)
Photo by Lisa Beth Anderson . This isn't the first time Philly's Kevin Killen has appeared in a Halfway House Session(see the cute drummer in the Chris Bathgate/Hezekiah Jones HH Sessions). Nor is this the first time we've tried to capture Kevin's own HH Session(another story for a different day in a different dimension). However - this is the first actual posting of the very charming Kevin Killen and his Halfway House Session and it's quickly become one of our favorites. Black Horse Motel at Kung Fu Necktie (03-01-2013) This past Friday night was the album release show for Black Horse Motel at Kung Fu Necktie . Black Horse Motel was celebrating the release of their debut album, Red Summer Spirit (available now on Bandcamp and other online stores). Also on the bill Friday night at Kung Fu Necktie was Hezekiah Jones and The Bailey Hounds. As often is the case, due to city parking I arrived at the show a little late and The Bailey Hounds [...]

Saturday night was Modern Inventors’ CD Release Show at Johnny Brenda’s . Modern Inventors seemed to be very grateful for the turnout and the opportunity to headline a show. I like Modern Inventors because their music is polished with great songwriting, strong vocals, and a fantastic sound. At times I hear The Beatles in their music as well as more contemporary artists like My Morning Jacket, Band of Horses, and other great artists. Saturday night’s full band performance was the perfect way to celebrate a CD release. For Radiohead , as with so many bands formed in high school, it is the team that matters first and foremost, in no small part because of the tight and adept skills each band member has developed throughout their co-evolution and ongoing collaboration. Guitarist and composer Ed O'Brien is celebrated for his distinctive use of effects pedals, and for the harmonies he brings to help create and sustain Radiohead's rich, layered sound; the versatility of drummer Phil Selway has been a key component of their evolution as a modern band, especially as they have moved on to adopt [...]
