Philly Local's Hezekiah Jones have a stunning new EP called Come To Our Pool Party on Yer Bird Records. Raphael Cutrufello is the singer and songwriter of the songs and he mines similar musical territory as M. Ward and Will Oldham with a little Paul Simon in the mix. Listen closely to the lyrics of this one... Cupcakes For The Army - Hezekiah Jones Hezekiah's myspace

Well, it's the second of our Best-of lists. This one is for the top EPs of the year. Now before you get all in our mush about your favorite EPs not being here, we didn't claim to be the defacto experts. It's simply the ten EPs we liked the most this year. To add that personal touch, we got people to answer some simple questions about their year. Not everyone got back to us yet, so we will probably update this as more answers trickle in. 10.) There are a couple of artists that I love so much that anything they put their name falls directly into my wheelhouse. That list is not very long, so when I found out Hezekiah Jones had finished up their new EP - Come to Our Pool Party - I pretty well assumed it was going to be amazing. Raph Cutrufello (front man for this folk unit) has always been able to make a few simple notes sounds like a symphony and his delivery is as warm and comforting as those mittens that are [...]

anyone's guess will be flying most of the day today, headed back to the east coast, back home, for (yet another) wedding. so the posting schedule, for the next day or two, and then again next weekend, may get a bit wonky. in the meantime, here's a song by philadelphia band hezekiah jones , which was spinning through my head head when i woke up this morning. "i'm coming home, i'm coming over tonight, put on your light..." hezekiah jones - put on your light happy labor day everyone.
Wow, are we ever hyped up about this one. Raphael of Hezekiah Jones fame offered up a nice take on the Palace Brothers ( Will Oldham ) track, I am a Cinematographer . If you haven't checked out Hezekiah Jones album, Hezekiah Says You're A-OK you are missing out. Still not sold? Check out our review . Still not sold? Well I've got two strong words for you.... come onnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn. MP3:: [...]

A little while ago I nestled some kind words about the new Hezekiah Jones release amongst some info about Josh Ritter. While understated praise suits the unassuming style of lead singer Raphael Cutrufello's voice, the record has continued to grow on me and more praise is due. The gentle strums of an acoustic, almost misleading you to believe the thoughts that crowd Raphael's days are happy, are sparse, forcing you concentrate on the vivid emotions and scenes painted on each song. Raphael balances the eccentric nature [...]
Here are some songs that I have been listening to lately. Check em out. Im also working on a way to make an actual playlist out of each of these posts so that you can just click once and listen to all of the songs. The Walkmen - Many Rivers to Cross The Submarines - Peace & Hate [...]
The new Josh Ritter album has been showing up on more web sites than Paris Hilton's under carriage. Well, he's coming to Vancouver on Thursday October 19th to support Jamie Cullum . Go to HOB.ca to get some seats - for the low, not low price of $39.50 plus the service charge. Too rich for my blood, especially to see Josh as an opener, but I iwsh I could justify the expense. Aquarium Drunkard is back [...]

An Aquarium Drunkard holds anything released by Charlottesville, VA's Yer Bird Records in high esteem, but this, the label's fourth release, is by far it's strongest. Yer Bird's latest find, Philadelphia based Hezekiah Jones, weaves his musical quilt out of the same soft, acoustic cloth most recently and elegantly spun by the likes of Sam Beam and Will oldham. While warm and inviting, Hezekiah pokes and stirs up darker lyrical truths [...]

Well, the newest release on Yer Bird is finally here: Philadelphia's Hezekiah Jones ' Hezekiah Says You're A-Ok .' It's a really great record, if I do say so myself, and I think it'll be right up the alleys of you regular readers of this here blog. To my ears it's got a lot of Iron & Wine -pretty mixed with a good amount of Will Oldham -oddity; always a good thing in my book. There's more than a hint of some of the cracked brillance of the White Album (at least [...]

So Yer Bird's 4 for 4 or something like that, I can't keep track. Their new release by Hezekiah Jones doesn't stray that far from the contemplative indie folk this small label is quickly becoming know for. Says You're A-Ok is mostly acoustic although there is a little bit of eerie background howls, distorted harmonica, found sounds and a few beep and whirrs on the song "Albert Hash". That's the one I'm drawn to so far but you can sample more for [...]
