I can’t label myself as a fan of The Hidden Cameras... I love the track "We Oh We" from Mississauga Goddam , but that’s pretty much it. Well, that’s until I heard their brilliant new record, Origin:Orphan . The band’s fifth album begins with a very epic sounding first track, "Ratify The New", which is then contrasted by the poppy single, "In the NA". The first two songs pretty much sum up the entire album—it features a mixture of serious/grand sounding songs as well as cheery pop sensations. This is exactly why I love Origin:Orphan ! It [...]

[ via ] It's gonna be a good week - I can feel it in my bones. That's my story anyway and I'm stickin' to it. The release from this past week I've been most looking forward to but for reasons various haven't actually gotten my hands on is the new A Place To Bury Strangers album Exploding Head . I have, however, been following their tour blog , which is entertaining. But, oh my, the massiveness of "In Your Heart" - one of the [...]

by Dave "Scout" Tafoya Welcome to the cabaret of Joel Gibb. The Berlin-based frontman of the Toronto-based musical collective, The Hidden Cameras , has found what he likes best and made a highly efficient machine out of it. What does he like? Hooks. Hooks so theatrical they border on kitsch. Switching between showmanship mixed with operatic presentation of otherwise ordinary (if splendid) tunes, soft inward-looking balladeering, and Pleasure Principle-inspired new wave, Origin:Orphan , The Cameras' fifth album, finds them delivering non-stop niceties, whether you want them or not. The songs [...]

(photo: Myspace.com) Calling the opening track "Ratify the New" is one way to signal that Origin:Orphan is not the same old Hidden Cameras . "Like the death of his muse/ratify the new," proclaims Joel Gibb, and based on the elongated droning note that prefaces the song, Gibb and company are clearly finding inspiration in new places. "Forget what you know," he instructs the listener, a fair warning to fans that what you're about to experience is not what you may be expecting. It is a thunderous and intimidating song-two descriptors [...]

Ian Darken Something I learned yesterday - I wasn't able to get by on three hours of sleep when I was young, I sure as hell can't do it now. Blogging isn't so easy when your brain has the consistency of porridge, so I'm thankful that there's been a pile of new videos, sessions and streams amassing in my drafts folder which I can hopefully distill into some sort of post. And we'll begin with Athens, Georgia's Venice Is Sinking , who've got a new video, stream AND MP3 to share, all in honour of their [...]
The Hidden Cameras - Ratify the New Takes a little while for this track to get going but I promise if you listen to the whole thing you’ll be cool with it. The Hidden Cameras just released their 5th studio album “Origin - Orphan”. It gets my stamp of approval.
O single de avanço, "In the NA", já foi entretanto lançado em Julho '09 no EP 'In the NA' o qual contem 2 lados-B e duas

Ben Ritter Hospice , the much-praised new record from Brooklyn solo project turned trio The Antlers , is an exceedingly difficult listen for me. The album is built around a central narrative about a man losing a loved one to cancer and it's so successful in evoking the emotions and atmosphere around that that when I listen to it, my teeth clench and chest tightens. It's actually physically uncomfortable. Hospice accomplishes this by means both obvious and not. To the former, [...]
Yes, I have written about "In the NA" previously, but that was just when the video was released. KEXP just posted an MP3 for download, so I'm taking this as another opportunity to share my love of their new record Origin: Orphan. Dig it. MP3: Hidden Cameras - In the NA This has quickly become one [...]

Frank Yang It's been almost a year since Caribou's Dan Snaith walked off the stage, giant cheque in hand, having been crowned the 2008 Polaris Music Prize winner for his stunning record Andorra . But since then, things have been largely silent in camp Caribou since then, as Snaith was presumably hard at work on the follow-up record. Then in May, word of a live show for the Fall. Not a tour, but the sort of special event that happens when Wayne Coyne [...]

On September 22, Arts & Crafts brings us yet another original & charming record to caper and cavort to. Origin:Orphan is the fourth full-length treasure from Toronto’s ever-burgeoning cache of sprightly minstrels, The Hidden Cameras . The album was recorded in Toronto, Ontario and Berlin, and feels as if it’s a kind of rollicking audio passport, each song another fabled adventure and another stamp allowing access as they cross the border along their daring, arcane journey, that at times feels a bit stormy but is mostly inspired by mirth. The track layout has a linear, narrative quality [...]

Hidden Cameras have me feeling mighty 90's today. I don't why this track "In the NA" is so damn good, it reminds of so many useless silly songs that wear out quick but in the moment are just trancedently 'pop'. What the hell does it mean to be "in the NA"? Who gives a shit I'm bopping around my living room, shut up, that's what. I usually don't post indie rock as obvious as this, but mostly indie rock isn't this good. The cheesy synth brass hook, the totally underutilized in indie rock baritone [...]

MP3: The Hidden Cameras - "Ratify the New" MP3: The Flaming Lips - "The Captain" These songs have fictional physics. The kind of dream science that anything can happen if you just start small. These songs move slowly like the sun. They move like mountains tapped on the shoulder, turning around to see who it is. They rip up the roots, in slow motion, their regular motion is slow motion. They move like whales organizing to change the tides. They fold [...]

. A propos huge fan του προηγούμενου post ευπειθώς αναφέρω τα εξής: Παρά το απογοητευτικό walk on που δίνουν στο site τους οι Hidden Cameras πάντα καταφέρνουν να με μετατρέπουν στο κοριτσάκι με τα κόκκινα παπούτσια του παραμυθιού.
