Frank Yang For the last few years, Harbourfront Centre has been the go-to spot for Canada Day celebrations in Toronto. Each year, they put on a free show on the lake with some of the top domestic acts of the moment, but on a year-to-year basis they've also been doing a pretty great job of representing all the facets of what we'd call Canadian indie rock. Back in 2007 (I missed the 2006 show featuring The Dears ), they showcased the more avant garde end of the spectrum with Final Fantasy [...]

Frank Yang You might say this gig was a long time coming. After their triumphant show at Lee's Palace last November to wrap their continent-spanning tour with The Acorn , Toronto's orch-pop heroes Ohbijou went into seclusion to work on their sophomore album and emerged this Spring with Beacons . Or at least they were supposed to - almost as soon as they were announced in late February, the April release date and accompanying tour, including a hometown release party, were all were suddenly cancelled with [...]

Hailing from the land of all things beautiful and idyllic (Canada of course!), Gentleman Reg , if you haven't already been introduced, is so much more than cool indie pop from Toronto with a lot of very cool indie music friends. Sure, Gentleman Reg has played with Broken Social Scene , Stars , and The Hidden Cameras and he's friends with Timothy Kingsbury from Arcade Fire from way back when they were wee, but really [...]

Apparently, since February of 2007, Canada's Hidden Cameras have put out *3* different limited-edition LPs of their 2006 album, Awoo . The first (sold out) edition was designed and hand-screened by artist Will Munro , in an edition of 200. The second version (211 copies, sold out) came in September of '07, and featured artwork (and screenprinting) by Daryl Vocat . The third, and final, edition has *just* been released, in an edition of 144, this one with art hand-painted by Joel Gibb himself. You can nab a copy here [...]

The Hidden Cameras - Learning the Lie Wake up, press play and start your day on the right note - hyperactivity quickly giving way to yelp-worthy jubilation. An old favourite from a mix I put together two years ago called A Cleansing Presence…A Shining Path , but originally found on an album of "gay church folk music" entitled Awoo , by Canadian pop outfit the Hidden Cameras. One of the most irresistably feel-good songs I've ever heard. Buy [...]

"Vermue was also a member of The Hidden Cameras for several years and has performed with B roken Social Scene , sung backup for Sufjan Stevens , and often guests with Final Fantasy " γράφει η σελίδα του στη Wikipedia, και όσοι παρακολουθούν αυτό το blog ξέρουν ήδη πως για μας εδώ αυτό είναι ένα ονειρεμένο βιογραφικό. I am fighting desperately to not refer to Laura Barrett [Myspace] as "Nora Byrd", but she not only reminds me of the soft-spoken, indie-centric librarian from my small-college days, but she also creates the weirdest, most unbelievably calming percussion ever, thanks in part to Paul Aucoin (of Hylozoists fame). With her upcoming full-length debut, Victory [...] [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]

Laura Barrett - The Wood Between Worlds Classically trained pianist surfs eBay looking for midi controllers, ends up bidding on a kalimba, and a musical career dedicated to "neurotic sci folk" is born. Toronto's Laura Barrett (also a member of Hidden Cameras) has followed up two EPs of ornate pop with the whimsy of her first full-length album, Victory Garden , released in Canada through Paper Bag records. MySpace [...]
Polaroids From the Web Print edition Oggi qualche segnalazione di articoli un po' lunghi che vale la pena di stamparsi e leggere con calma: - Il Village Voice intervista "Carles" , l'autore-personaggio di Hipster Runoff . Già da frasi come «the perception of music criticism seems to have shifted to a "product review by someone who cares too much"» mi pare si possa dire che non è uno stupido nichilista come crede Nick Sylvester (nel post già segnalato su Inkiostro , dove se ne discute [...]

Yo fools! It's OSS's Queer Week . Un-coincidentally , I first heard The Hidden Cameras, Canada's very own "gay church folk music" band, on one of my trips to Toronto. This was the trip when I went with Ali, Stevie and Anjeanette. It was sort of a haphazard tour of south east Ontario, where we made stops with random friends/acquaintances in Waterloo, Guelph and Toronto. We met and immediately loved Andrew in Toronto and he took us around to coffee shops, record stores and thrift stores. [...]

Photograph by Ama Chana One may note the slight irony of an LGBT fundraiser taking place in a place of Christian worship, but after witnessing The Hidden Cameras' revelatory show at St. Leonard's Church, Shoreditch one couldn't help be struck how fitting a venue it was. Despite their name, which to this reviewer evokes images of gloomy Interpol-esque miserabilia, Joel Gibb's "gay church folk choir" are as glorious a live band to come out of Canada ...
