Oakland-based stoner metal gods High on Fire have announced that they'll be releasing their next studio album on Koch Records (In Flames, Hatebreed) sometime in 2009. Until then, we can occupy ourselves with a live album, the band's final release for Relapse, recorded from the 2003 Contamination Festival. The appropriately-titled Live From The Relapse Contamination [...]
Empty Pleasures and Desperate Measures since 1994. Now-defunct Californian label Man's Ruin Records was founded by graphic artist Frank Kozik in 1994. Its first release was "Delta 63 by Experimental Audio Research, post-Spacemen 3 project of Sonic Boom/Peter Kember. Kozikdesigned all the sleeve art for label releases and he was signing artists in all kinds of [...]

Brooklyn Vegan 's own Black Bubblegum recently grabbed a second interview with Al Cisneros ( Om , Sleep ) about the upcoming Sleep reunion and more. In reference to the Sleep reunion Al said: These plans have always been kind of tentative when the right time arose... It's really difficult to have all three of us in the same room at the same time...At my wedding last August, both Matt [Pike of High On Fire, Kalas] and Chris [Hakius, ex-Om] were there and it was another rare opportunity [...]
HOLY FUCKING SHIT. Ten years after their breakup, Sleep, one of the most influential and well-loved stoner/doom bands on the planet, are reuniting for two UK reunion shows (May 9th and May 10th). They'll be playing Somerset, UK's All Tomorrow's Party Festival, at which they'll be playing their immortal classic Holy Mountain in its entirety, in [...]

I'm sitting in Podcast Jack's basement. He's more drunk than Ken or I have ever seen in our entire lives. No, wait, Ken just remembered that Jack puked two years ago at the Broadway Diner in Summit, New Jersey -- but he had also been smoking grass that night, and it totally threw off his equilibrium. Or, so he says right now. Jack wants me to write about how "we" (and by that he means the Obscure References crew, I think) are a failed culture. "Jack, how are we a failed culture?" I ask. "Fuck." he [...]

A month or so ago Opeth came to New York's Nokia Theater as part of an awesome (and diverse) package with High on Fire and Nachtmystium. It was one of those nights; a Monday or Tuesday, I was fucking exhausted from having traveled cross-country the night before, partied too many nights in a row, just [...]

Metal Sucks is reporting that Nachtmystium have been forced to drop off the Opeth tour due to "issues beyond control." We recently discussed this tour's stop in NYC, and can say with certainty that Nachtmystium will be sorely missed for the rest of this leg. Live, they brought an intensity to their new material, without neglecting their older catalogue. Nachtmystium stated that they hope to have everything in order soon, to ensure their dates with Wolves in The Throne Room go on. Read [...]
Even the best package tours usually have at least one weak spot, band-wise; but the Opeth/High on Fire/Nachtmystium tour, which Vince and I got to check out last week, is pretty much perfect from start to finish. And one of the reasons is - or guess now I should say "was" - the presence of Nachtmystium. [...]

by theseseans (NYC) Shows have been starting early lately, and when I saw that the doors at Nokia Theater were opening at 6, I made sure to get there early at 6:15. Of course the one time I get there early, the show didn't start until 7:30; a minor annoyance however, could not touch the good mood that Nachtmystium put me in when they kicked into 'One Of These Nights.' The band played the first three song of their latest album, Assassins: Black Meddle Part 1 intensely. Following those up was 'Your [...]
by theseseans (NYC) Tonight! Opeth , High on Fire , and Nachtmystium play the Nokia Theater in Times Square. Fuck, I am excited as this will be my first time seeing Opeth. Also this week in NYC metal, we have the ever illustrious Motorhead , with support from Valient Thorr rocking Saturday night at Roseland. Along with these shows we have several excellent local shows to pepper your otherwise weak weekend, including Friday night's Unsound show at Fontana's featuring Unearthly Trance , [...]

Hey, it's Friday. Do you know what that means? I'm just beginning my work week, which is about the worst thought imaginable. Actually, that's not true, as I think I recently compiled a top ten list ranking some of the "worst things". Actually, it was ten horrible things that could happen to you ...but you get the idea. I probably shouldn't slag off about my work considering the hours are cushy and the environment is relatively stress-free. Just today someone walked up to me and handed me four free tickets to a screening of Burn After Reading next Thursday [...]
A documentary tracing heavy rock/stoner rock/doom/etc. from the '70s til right now made by L.A. RECORD friend and supporter Jessica Hundley—last seen at Don't Knock The Rock (alongside a set by Earthless) and screening tonight for free at the Echoplex to prepare for Sunday's Manifest Destiny show. Crustcake is very excited about September 18th, the NYC stop of will surely be one of the best US tours this fall : Opeth , Baroness , High on Fire , and Nachtmystium . Not satisfied to let any of America go without their unique take on black metal, Nachtmystium has scheduled several other U.S. dates in support of their 2008 release Assassins: Black Meddle Part 1 . After the Opeth tour, Nachtmystium will be hitting the road with Wolves in the Throne Room . Read [...]

Black Bubblegum has done all the hard work for us, confirming all dates for this fall's Opeth / High On Fire run . Opeth and High On Fire will be supported by Nachtmystium (first half of the tour) and Baroness (second half) and we think that's just swell. Tickets are on pre-sale now , full tour routing below. Opeth, High On Fire - 2008 Fall Dates: Sep. 16 - Buffalo, The Town Ballroom - NY* Sep. 17 [...]
Metal. Oh sweet metal. My brother listens to way more heavy music than I do and Death Is This Communion was his favorite metal album of 2007 and after further deliberation, I find that statement difficult to refute. make no mistake this is some powerful and beastly metal, but rather than just throw comparisons around, I'll just let the music do the talking here. This is truly some amazing stuff Oakland's High On Fire and highly recommended for fans of Mastodon, etc… and don't forget to catch them on the Gigantour [...]
by crustcake gerf (NYC) If you missed High On Fire 's recent New York gig at Europa , like I did, now's your chance to make up for it. WoozyFly.com (terrible name) was there and captured the show on video. I gotta say, the sound is fantastic. Watch part 1 here and then head to WoozyFly.com to see part 2. High On Fire - Live at Europa, Greenpoint, Brooklyn 2/10/08 (click through to watch): [...]

First proper released track is on myspace . I'd post it but it's semi high profile. This is Hell - Broken Teeth Who wears a hood while singing punk ? (Please open the article to see the flash file or player.) Cancer Bats - Hail Destroyer First track from Hail Destroyer Maritime -Guns I don't think the Dismemberment Plan guy is in this band anymore, [...]
I have a lot of trouble keeping track of Boris albums so I have no idea what release this is or how many there have been all I know is there is a new Boris album and I couldn't be happier. Smile is a lot different from what we've come to expect from the band. Albums like Pink and Akuma no Uta set precedence for gloomy, droning metal, and though the band doesn't stray from that entirely they do
