In all the craziness of Christmas our in-box got overwhelmed with videos from all sorts of interesting folk. So here's your chance to give them a viewing and pick up one or two nice mp3s. Those Lavender Whales have come up with a novel way of showcasing their track Growth In Question from their new record, Tomahawk Of Praise , which is due for release on the 17th January on Fork & Spoon. a The Red Shoes video [...]

Just hearing the lads in High On Stress sends me on a nostalgia bruise cruise of wasting away endless Moorhead winter nights in the relative comfort of the vinyl booths in holes like Ralph's and Kirby's, listening to The Gear Daddies on the juke. The foursome, who also serve as Slim Dunlop's hired guns, recently released their junior (is that right?) effort, Living Is A Dying Art . Nothing too fancy here, kiddos. Just come-as-you-are Americana and songs as study as Grandpa's back, before that goddamned factory job [...]

Just some recent songs I took a bit of a fancy to. Siskiyou travels to Bonnie Billy country, Haroula Rose does the folky duet thing very well, and High On Stress sure digs the Mats a lot. Widowspeak dreams back to the indie eighties, Wounded Lion plays barbwire pop with a delightful chorus (" LVXLCDM " anyone?), while Centro-matic fondly remembers the Mary Chain. Broaden that musical horizon why don't you, pop kids. Siskiyou - Dear Old Friends Haroula Rose - Free To Be Me [...]

No matter how you slice it, The Replacements cast a long shadow over Minneapolis rock. The band was so incredibly important to music as a whole that it must be daunting for any group from the town to try to play their style of freewheeling, clever rock n' roll. One band that makes a pretty good go at it is High On Stress . They have their third full length album, Living Is a Dying Art , coming out shortly. From the opening bars of "Bite Your Tongue", [...]
High on Stress frontman Nick Leet has been a Minneapolitan for many years now, but he isn't shy about his love for his hometown of Minot, North Dakota. Unfortunately, that town has been the site of s

Anyone who's ever come across this site probably knows by now that I'm a huge fan of The Replacements . Without them making new music though, who am I to turn to? One of the answers is Minneapolis' High On Stress . That band, who often back up Slim Dunlap , release their third studio album, Living Is a Dying Art , on November 15th. Check out the first track " These Days Are Gone ". Now if they'd only make it north of the [...]

As Teenage Kicks (quietly) celebrates our fifth birthday (stay tuned for a couple of contests next week), on Saturday we'll be hightailing it down to the new World Cafe in Wilmington, DE to catch Marshall Crenshaw celebrating the 30th anniversary of his stone classic debut album. A primer on creating the perfect pop song, Marshall Crenshaw has been a constant companion on every road trip for Mr. & Mrs. Teenage Kicks (speaking of Mrs. TK, happy anniversary baby!). And wait, it gets better! The Bottle Rockets, promoting their new acoustic [...]
I raved about Minneapolis band High On Stress and their 2008 album Cop Light Parade. I firmly believe they compare favorably to other Twin City icons like The Replacements and The Hold Steady. So I was quite pleased last night to be stumbling around the Interwebs and uncovering this live gem of the band doing a live rendition of The Replacements' "Alex Chilton" from just after the Big Star

One of the overriding themes of this blog is the fact that, quite frankly, I'm getting on a bit. Yeah, sure, I'm not quite reading Q or Mojo yet, but I'll be 40 in a few years and that mid-life crisis is going to start gnawing at my toes soon. If I start doing posts about my knees hurting or how I'm going to go out and buy me a Porsche, then you know it's hit me right between the eyes. In the interim I shall just do posts like these, in which I bemoan the [...]

There is something terribly creepy about baby dolls. But this flyer is pretty cool anyway.
photo: Steve Cohen High on Stress will be playing Little Man's CD release show on November 8 at The Entry before heading out to California for a few dates at the end of the month. The band will also be playing this Saturday at Stasiu's. Here is a previously unreleased studio version of the band's song "Alcohol Smile." I don't know what it is, but I love rock bands from Minneapolis. The Replacements, The Jayhawks, The Hold Steady, Tapes N' Tapes...now you can add High On Stress to the list. Cop Light Parade is the new album from the band. Combining rock and country influences, it's difficult to avoid drawing comparisons between High On Stress and a great number of great bands (The 'Mats, Drive-By Truckers, Wilco, and Blue Rodeo are some of the first that spring to mind). The [...]
Who: High On Stress What do they sound like: Everything that made the 80s Minnesota rock scene so great. Why YOU Should Listen: A lot of bands cite The Replacements as a huge inspiration in their sound. But when you listen to Minneapolis-based High On Stress, the sentiment feels genuine. But let's give the band some freakin' credit here. They have mastered the sound that has made their city so revered in the rock stratosphere. 'Mats aside, the band's catchy, rootsy alt-rock is mixed with equal parts Yo La Tengo, [...]

For those of you who liked what you heard in my previous post about High On Stress , you'll be pleased to know that the album, Cop Light Parade, is now out! It's available at CD Baby (where it can also be streamed directly in your browser) and Kool Kat Musik within a couple of days. Kool Kat are also throwing in a 3 track bonus CD to anyone who buys it from them as a special offer. Happy buying! High On Stress - Cash Machine (mp3, 2.3mb) [...]

Let's kick things off this week with the sultry, smoky voice of Melody Gardot . Her debut LP, "Worrisome Heart" is out and what I've heard of it so far is just stunning. Gardot was seriously injured after being hit by a car whilst riding her bicycle in 2004. One of the treatments suggested for her was music therapy and she has truly blossomed. The title track is a guantlet thrown down for aspiring jazz singers. Sublime. MP3: Melody Gardot - "Worrisome Heart" . Word of mouth is still [...]
