An Oakland band known as HIJK have been playing in and around the Bay Area since their early days as Hijack the Disco. Back in 2007, HIJK released The Pen and the Letter , an album full of hyper late 90's-style rock, full of addictive hooks and complex riffs. Ich habe erst etwas bei dem Namen überlegen müssen, habe versucht Vokale zu ergänzen um auf andere Wörter zu kommen, dabei lag die Antwort doch ganz nahe. Ein Blick auf das Cover der gerade veröffentlichten Debüt CD (s.o.) von HIJK hätte gereicht um mir die Gehirnarbeit zu sparen. Beim Hören derselbigen muß man dieses Organ auch kaum anstrengen, geht der dynamische und tolle Art Pop der Band doch sofort in die Beine und ins Herz, da wo guter Indie Pop hingehört. Easy, symphatisch und meist im Uptempo gehaltene Songs, catchy Refrains und keine Scheu vor Instrumenten jenseits der üblichen Gitarre-Bass-Drums-Gesang [...]
Even though the year is rather close to wrapping up I'm still receiving quite a few emails about new records, which is a little weird. Usually, everything drops off after Thanksgiving but this year it looks as if the promoters will be pushing all the way into 2008. Inspired by Pinback, Bloc Party, Metric, and Modest Mouse, Oakland, California's art-rockers HIJK have a habit of turning conventional pop techniques upside down.
