Courtesy Kelp Records , it's a band called Hilotrons (no the ?), and like the rest of the Kelp roster (greats like Andrew Vincent & the Pirates, Jim Bryson, Andy Swan, Detective Kalita and many, many more) they're an Ottawa-based outfit with questionable haircuts. The song clocks in at barely over a minute-and-a-half, and it doesn't start off so hot, but a lot happens after the first little bit that promises fun things from their upcoming long-player Happymatic , due April 1 of this year. mp3: " Dominika " by Hilotrons
Kelp Records was founded in 1994 in Frederiction by Jon Bartlett, but is now located in Ottawa. Enough about that, lets talk music. Jim Bryson Jim Bryson . Jim has been making solo records since 2000 and has backed other Canadian talent such as Kathleen Edwards, Sarah Harmer and The Weakerthans. His latest release, Where the Bungalows Roam (2007), is available for streaming on the Kelp site. It is worth a listen. It reminds me a lot of Luna. [...]

Flecton sets the mood like no other at The Manx on Wednesday. Ok, so dial613 is going to go ahead and acknowledge the elephant in the room right away: this Wednesday is a pretty special day . And, if you do by chance choose to celebrate, your options are certainly open. The most typically romantic idea would be to head over to The Black Sheep Inn in the wonderful setting of Wakefield, where you can get lost in the atmospheric songwriting of Josh Ritter and the lovely voice [...]

This band sure has climbed a very long way to be here today. In fact they've gone all the way from 'pfft' to 'this band is so hot that I must tell you about them'. The story begins with Cokemachineglow.com where I read a review for their brand new album, Bella Simone. I can't remember it but it must have been positive because I wrote it down as an album to get. Then my cousin raved to me about one of their songs and I obliged by listening to it. My response was that it was quite interesting, which as [...]
Starting tonight, 333 musical acts of all sorts descend upon Montreal for the POP Montreal festival, including the likes of Joanna Newsom , Portastatic , and Sunset Rubdown . That's just the tip of the iceberg, too.. there's 330 others, remember? Of those 333 acts, a mere 4 are from Ottawa. This means Ottawa accounts for 1.2% of POP Montreal's acts, which, intriguingly, is the same percentage by which Quebec's Jobboom Index rose at just about this time in 2002. Coincidence? dial613 thinks [...]

Akron/Family play at the First Baptist Church on Friday This Sunday at Zaphod's, there's yet another indiescene veteran in town(in addition to Yo La Tengo last week), Giant Sand . The 20+ year-old Tucson indie rock band features Howe Gelb , who has an unlikely number of Ottawa connections: his latest solo album, 'Sno Angel Like You , was inspired by a winter-time trip to Ottawa and a Bluesfest set at a church with local singer-songwriter Jim Bryson and gospel choirs. Not only was the album inspired by [...]

Someone informed me yesterday that the most glaring problem with Ottawa's rising music scene is its tendency to cater to a younger crowd. That I couldn't spot anyone over twenty-six at last night's Jetplanes Of Abraham concert suggests that this indeed might be the case. The Hilotrons' Mike Dubue, then, is the exception: here's a guy who's been playing music in this city for longer than I've even been alive, a hardened veteran with as much talent as he has experience. Being the oldest and arguably most successful band in Ottawa has its ups and downs: [...]

Amos The Transparent's favourite number is ten, followed closely by 9-1-1 This week is a bit of a sleeper, though not to be confused with being sleepy . As in, it should be a great chance to hear some new and up-and-coming music that you might not have gotten to in a busier week. Specifically, you can see Amos The Transparent , a "new" local band that includes former members of the now-defunct Keep Yourself Good Company and the not-at-all-defunct The Architects , as well as singer-songwriter Ana Miura . [...]
