Guitar music is dead....or so the papers say. As we move into 2012 every music publication is waiting for the next big guitar band, the next Libertines or Arctic Monkeys, a band that can change the landscape of music, a real 'game changer' and Tribes have been atop many peoples list including my own. But are Tribes really the saviour of the British guitar band? Read more..

I first heard of Tribes a few months back and was instantly hooked on their 'We Were Children' track and it still remains heavy on my playlists. Well Tribes full length debut album, titled "Baby" is just around the corner and is set for a January 16, 2012 release date. You can listen to the newest song from the album now below and it is titled 'Himalaya' and is a fantastic tune. The song reminds me a little of early age Radiohead The Bends, as it serves up some guitar riffs that are truly magical. [...]

Time to Gaze at the " STARS" , ladies and gentleman. Considering their name is Warpaint , this is flourescent-yellow-mellow, a quaint combo of Slowdive , Himalaya , Asobi Seksu and several more I don't have the energy to get into quite yet ( Lush , Chapterhouse , Astral - ... AGGHH, STOP). Truth is, I've been busy as IT-SHAY and haven't [...]

Another week, another early week Ten Tracks You Need. This time it wasn't because of email but because of work, they essentially shifted my entire world last week and I had to move, be trained etc. This left little time for music as I was knee deep in learning how to do things. Anyway, if you're lucky you might just get TWO Ten Tracks You Need this week. One today and one on Friday. I'm slowly catching up and hope to be completely caught up by the end of the week. That just means I'll be collecting track [...]

If there is indeed a shoegaze/dream-pop (is it too late to get in on the C86 rebirth?) revival going on in New York, you'd have to plop Himalaya near the peak, if only because they so keenly take on every aspect of the genre, from the soft-yellow dual vocals, slow tempos, hazy atmospherics right down to the fuzz growing on their guitars like a goatee. There's a [...]
Brooklyn's Himalaya has released its self-titled debut album; from it comes "Melt Away." And melt away you will when the transient, psychedelic rock hits your ears. Himalaya jams out to a rhythm of its own with haunting tracks influenced by a mix of trippy classic rock and moody post-punk. Prepare to take a trip into [...]

Tuesday, July 14, 2009 Today's Quick Mention: Holy Crap. The people handling the next live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie are having an open casting call for martial arts experts. Obviously, those last three words don't quite describe me, but that might not be the case with you. I say give it a shot. Despite being not-so-subtly advised yesterday to pick up the new Dead Weather record (seriously, is there anywhere that ads for it do not live?), I did [...]

Brooklyn's finest may be a stretch, but Himalaya is an extremely talented band. The self-titled debut by this New York six-piece excels in hazy psychedelic guitar rock. The band formed in 2005 and it's fronted by singer/guitarists Brian McNamara and Jamie Scythes. You can order their CD by clicking here . For fans of Vietnam, Darker My Love, My Bloody Valentine, Brian Jonestown Massacre and Pink Mountaintops. MP3: Himalaya - Melt Away MP3: Vietnam - Summer In The City [...]

Ice Palace release new music video, Mos Def & Jay Electronica announce First Ave. date & the Heavy play for the Current.
by Kevin Diamond This is exciting! The inaugural Northside Festival has begun, and it's sort of like watching a young child take it's first steps. As opposed to some other city-spanning festivals like CMJ, Northside's greatest strength is that it is centered around one neighborhood (Williamsburg, duh!), meaning you can easily traverse from one show to another without missing something. They've also (mostly) kept the rosters local-band-only, which is both entirely legit, and slightly limiting. Let's be honest, there just aren't 500 good bands from Brooklyn, so some of these [...]
things kick off this thursday with a the sharp little 2 band bill of Luxa and Telltale . Telltale... Brooklyn's Telltale showcases an intriguing mix of experimental no-wave, reverb-soaked post-punk, and dark shoegaze. Featuring Eric Gilstrap, Laurie Ruroden, Stephan Cherkashin, and Lauren Andino, the quartet's ear-splitting washes of guitar feedback, deadpan chants and ominous droning wastelands doesn't so much blanket you as it does envelop you, overpowering you with Sonic Youth caterwauls and JAMC-esque walls [...]
Last Wednesday I ventured over to the Bowery Ballroom after a recommendation to see Elvis Perkins in Dearland. I had stumbled upon him two Siren Festivals ago without knowing him and enjoyed the experience, but recently a couple of friends had recommended him. The sold-out concert was full of 20-30 somethings who likely felt much of the hurt that Perkins himself has been through: losing a mother to the September 11th attacks and his actor father ( Psycho ) to AIDS in the mid-90s. From the floor, Perkins' waxing voice seemed to resonate with much of the crowd. Some of [...]
