Damien Jurado once again gets stuck in my head Song obsessions are those songs that get stuck in your head. This series of posts isn't about what I or the other panel members think is best, but what our brain latches onto, those ear worms that loop around and around in your head. - Adrian ( me ): Damien Jurado - Diamond in the Sea (mp3) (came with pre-order; buy Maraqopa ) [...]

http://hiphatchet.bandcamp.com /album/joy-and-better-days Hip Hatchet is a country-folk project from singer songwriter Philippe Bronchtein. The tracks on this LP feature some beautifully finger-picked guitar. There's a decent amount of diversity in instrumentation from track to track, helping to keep every song fresh. Bronchtein is a very descriptive songwriter and really excels at making it feel you are there with him in these places and situations he describes. This lyrical ability combined with a vocal delivery that gives him an overwhelming sense of wisdom makes this an album worth checking out. Stream the band's new album, Joy and Better [...]

I have to apologize for this quick post but I wanted to make sure y'all had a chance to listen and swing by to visit Hip Hatchet today on his album release day! Today sees "Joy and Better Days" released over on the Hip Hatchet Bandcamp Page ( HERE ) and comes with a Slowcoustic recommendation. The album can be considered "folk", but with Philippe Bronchtein's vocals giving you a Bill Callahan vibe, you know you are getting more than just a "folk" album. I will delve into the album [...]

Today's Rock it Out! Blog episode is hosted by Zach Hart from the website We Listen For You . He talks about the new album from The Walkmen, and promotes three bands: The Henry Clay People, Radical Dads and Hip Hatchet. He also has a rock music query of the day for you to answer. The Walkmen releasing new album The Henry Clay People Radical Dads Hip Hatchet

Portland, Oregon-based singer/songwriter Hip Hatchet , aka Philippe Bronchtein, self-released his Men Who Share My Name debut back in 2010. The album showcased Bronchetein's immense talent for constructing captivating folk songs with little more than his guitar and a voice warm as a log fire in winter. With arresting, pensive vocals and his ability to do so much with so little, it's no surprise he cites Nick Drake and Leonard Cohen as influences. Gravitation Records re-issued the debut a year later, and now the label is set to release Hip Hatchet's sophomore effort, Joy [...]

Hip Hatchet has been slowly perfecting his personal brand of folk. In the vein of his fellow folk musicians, "Sing Me a Reprise" is a little less Americana and more dusty proto-rock. Hip Hatchet's Joy and Better Days will be released April 10th. Sing Me a Reprise by Hip Hatchet Hip Hatchet on Bandcamp
Dudes, shit. I'm gonna be honest, this second beer is my only motivator to write something right now. Also, please note: the third-fifth beers will be the only motivators to actually finish something here on the interwebs. Don't worry 'bout me though ya'll, I've got a high tolerance. THAT SHIT IS IN MY DNA. Here are some things you should know about, if you like anything good at all. And I know that you do. It's why we're friends. ** There's a new Hip Hatchet jam which means a new Hip Hatchet album. The [...]

Philippe Bronchtein, aka Hip Hatchet , is one of the great singer/songwriters of our time. When we stumbled upon his debut LP, Men Who Share My Name, back in 2010, his approach to folk music was on the level of past greats like Nick Drake, Leonard Cohen, and Townes Van Zandt. Like those listed, Hip Hatchet does so much with so little...a simple guitar and vocal accompaniment can become a guidebook to life and all its hardships. From the very first listen it became apparent that the magic of Hip Hatchet comes from his [...]

Listen to the new song from Hip Hatchet , "Sing Me A Reprise" , taken from his forthcoming album "Joy And Better Days" . It's been great over the past few months to watch Philippe Bronchtein, a.k.a. Hip Hatchet , grow - and I don't just mean his beard. When we first featured him back in August last year, he had one full-length out, "Men Who Share My Name" , which had been kicking about for over a year. It might have been his first effort [...]

There were so many good EPs this year that they deserved their own list, although they easily could have competed with my top spots for albums. Bands, especially new bands, blew me away with their three to four flawless songs time and time again. The fact that these songs aren't getting lost in the shuffle of a mediocre 10 song album made a lot of bands shine brighter than more seasoned groups with LPs out this year. Here's what stood out the most for me. 1. [...]

December gave us a lot of retrospective lists on 2011 and many discussions about songs and albums. Because of this, we nearly forgot to keep you posted about new stuff. There are a lot of new albums coming in early 2012 (just as from of Montreal on the picture above) below there are some of the tunes that will make look forward to the records! (No guerolitoplaylist this month though.) mp3 | Bed Rugs - What Does It Mean mp3 | Islands - This Is Not A Song [...]

As this year of music comes to a close, I find myself scratching for greatness from the many albums that resonated with me. Little did I know that Philippe Bronchtein and his band Hip Hatchet would sneak in there and secure a solid spot as one of the best EPs of the year with this recently released Coward's Luck . If you dug the vulnerable and disarming Men Who Share My Name , you'll quickly fall in love with this. Enjoy. [Audio clip: view full post to listen] [...]
