Next week, Stereogum is putting on a show a little further from the south side of Williamsburg than we're used to: We've teamed up with Bella Union to present a night of music in Iceland's Reykjavik Museum, headlined by the great, Scandinavia-loving American band Beach House. The undercard features some regionally homegrown talent - Borko, Hjaltalín, Retro Stefson - and the event comes as part of this year's Iceland Airwaves festival. Scott and I will be there for our first time, and for the duration, reporting on both the local scene and how it feels to [...]

Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen is an unlikely sounding venue for live music, but this November evening it was as cool inside as it was out. The North London habitat had been invaded by Swedes and Icelanders, as well as many curious locals anxious to sample two bands from decidedly more northerly regions. It was certainly a good night to meet blondes. The recently Listen'ed Swedish four-piece Mono Stereo kicked things off. Their intense brand of guitar music has been rightly applauded for how seamlessly they combine late 60's psychedelia and 90's shoegaze. [...]

day two of Airwaves? in one word: WILD first I was on a networking meeting with Icelandic musicians it was a very intense and fun event I was attacked by 50+ artists got a huge pack of CDs, gave away tons of business cards got quite few promising stuff and I will keep my finger on the Icelandic music scene for sure my main mission was to see Dominique Young Unique 's show I got there early so I saw few other bands too Original Melody [...]

Hjaltalin - Terminal 3 8/10 Hjatalin are from Reykjavik. I don't know what it is about Iceland, maybe the long winter nights help throw up some of the most innovative and eclectic artists out there. It's difficult to even try to describe the sound that this seven-piece create, as every track is a new experience. Some feel like showtunes while others are a wild cacophony of sound. Normally I steer well clear of the more complex orchestral incarnations out there, but this is something else. [...]

An Icelandic 7 piece with all the connections you would imagine; Hjaltalin are not perhaps what you may expect from the shores that brought you Mum, Sigur Ros et al. Terminal picks up where the critically lauded Sleepdrunk Sessions left off with a mix of sunny orchestral soul-pop. These are classic soul arragements with a spring in their step but decorated with brass, strings and woodwind and with a glint in their eye that says they're not afraid to spring a few surprises on the listener. 'Sweet Impressions' is an [...]
Compilation albums are tricky things. Most of the time they're not successful, as one act always shines far above the others. On the flip side, compilation albums are great because you get to hear songs and bands you would have never heard otherwise (unless it's a Now That's What I Call Music record). Made in Iceland 3 features some new(ish) tracks from most of Iceland's best loved musicians. As well as a tune from Sigur Rós's Jonsi ('Boy Lilikoi'), there's excellent songs from Olafur Arnalds and Valgeir Sigurdsson. Made in Iceland III [...]

Mention Iceland to a weary traveler stuck at the airport and you may be greeted with a bout of swearing. The Iceland Music Export is doing their best to smooth things over, however, with the gift of music. Made in Iceland 3 is a collection of twenty songs from twenty Icelandic artists worth checking out and at the very least, it'll give you something to do while you're stuck at the airport. Track Listing 01. For a Minor Reflection - "Dansi Dans" ( MP3 ) 02. Jonsi - [...]
Er ekki tími tilkominn að heyra eitthvað íslenskt? Ég held það barasta. Þarfnast ekki frekari útskýringa er það? Bara smella á play og njóta! Hægt er að nálgast alla þessa tónlist á gogoyoko og Tónlist.is Egill S - Crazy like a bee Egill S - Crazy like a bee 7oi - Why can't a wasted void 7oi - Why can't a wasted void Bob Justman [...]

Oh Hjaltalín, where have you been all my life or at least since 2007 when it seems your 'Sleepdrunk Seasons' LP was released? Could have done with the brightness, the cascading waterfall of bumbly noise that gushes from tunes like 'Traffic Music'. This is wildly eclectic stuff from the Icelandic troupe but is styled in such a way that sets it free from accusations of arty fartyness. No, this smells, feels and sounds very palatable even for those not inclined to stray too far from Simon Cowell's retched bag of tricks. This is music designed to make you happy, its [...]
