Posted in Soundbite Since the holidays we've been slightly neglecting Weekend Tunage every Friday, but this week it's back and it's a bit of a family affair! My brother Francesco and I have pretty much aligned music taste, he's introduced me to new bands and I've introduced him to a few more! I asked him to choose a [...]

Photography by Us ... Happy Friday to you, once again, my dear friends! Got a special little treat for ya today. The other day, I was bored with ye ol' iPod and was looking around for something different. Suddenly remembered that in my drawer behind me at my desk there's a stack of old case-less CDs I've used as dust collectors over the years. Thumbing through, found some fun little albums that I used to - and in some cases still do - listen to, but one (well actually three) CDs [...]

Unlike most people, I remember the band Hockey Night. They never made a huge impact on the music world, that is to say they never quite attracted the hype that establishes so many smaller bands today. They were based out of Minnesota and released two albums over the course of their several years of existence. When their second album "Keep Guessin'" came out in 2005, I was in charge of the music at a small indie radio station, and the song "For Guys' Eyes Only" secured a spot in regular rotation at the time. It was a cool slice of [...]
Story by Adam Daniels Photography by Dorothy Hong Breaking up is always hard to do. With your main squeeze, definitely. But with your band? There goes your job and your best bros. Most people would need some time alone to bust out their Belle and Sebastian records and mope around. Luckily, Paul Sprangers and Scott Wells aren't most people. A few years ago, their band Hockey Night called it quits. And it wasn't one of those friendly breaks where you call each other on your [...]

Where Free Energy is a pretty straightforward glam/garage rock band, Hockey Night fell a little more into the angular, post-Pavement vibe that swept across the country in the late '90s early '00s.

i wanna believe but i'm out of control ♫ Free Energy - Free Energy When Free Energy's "Dream City" (below) hit the scene back in May I was intrigued but not sold. " Something In Common " followed in September and quickly became a steering-wheel-drumming favorite, but somehow I felt I had missed the boat on writing about the Philadelphia quintet. Then I saw and heard their video for "Free Energy" (above) and was sold/on board/in/stoked. The three tracks together are an aural ménage à trois that gets [...]
Live Friday this week features what you might call a new band, because they technically haven't released their debut album just yet, but a couple of their members do have previous band experience. I'm talking about Free Energy, a band started by former members of Hockey Night, who broke up not too long ago. I liked Hockey Night well enough, but it seems to me that Free Energy are already getting more press and buzz than their former band ever did. Perhaps one of the bigger reasons why is that they're signed to DFA Records, the label founded by James [...]

Their music is fun and easy to like and is bringing the band some well deserved attention (more than enough to make up for the lack of national attention Hockey Night got when they were around).
Free Energy - Dream City Hockey Night - Get Real Many are probably familiar with that first track, Dream City, which bites just a tiny bit on T. Rex to my mind (esp. the beginning), but probably not with the second (and arguably better) track, Get Real. That Hockey Night album, Keep Guessin (on Lookout Records, I think), is a total gem. Although when I first heard it (after hearing the Free Energy track in May), I thought, wow, sounds like the singer really loves Malkmus a whole [...]
Once upon a time there was a little St. Paul band named Hockey Night. They showed up in all sorts of cool places online including Daytrotter and SPIN. Then one day, as rumor has it, things fell apart internally and folks went their separate ways. Paul Spranger and Scott Wells of Hockey Night moved to Philly, [...]

From the ashes of Hockey Night comes the straight-nostalgic rockers Free Energy . Word on the street is that the man behind the production of the groups self-titled 73 is none other than James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem . You'll find all sorts of reference points on this album from the days of old, but probably not the ones you would expect. Try this one on for size. Download: Free Energy - Free Energy [MP3]

DFA Records will soon release (this coming Tuesday) the debut 7" from Free Energy . Free Energy was born from the ashes of the once very excellent band Hockey Night ( 4/06 ). The 7" is limited to only 350 copies, so grab it Tuesday. MP3 : Free Energy - Free Energy Previous: MP3 : Free [...]
Ten years ago Hockey Night was just a bunch of four track demos from a chill bro in Red Wing, MN named Paul Sprangers (who may or may not have contributed to this video about people from Minnesota who use knives inappropriately). When he wasn't popping wheelies, hanging with dubious Julies or performing in spazz-punk trio The Renegades (with drummer Alex Achen and guitarist Scott Wells), P penned songs that would later be compared to Pavement, Thin Lizzy, T. Rex and The Wyld Stallyns. In 2003 I ordered their debut LP Rad Zapping [...]

*MP3: Hockey Night - "For Guys' Eyes Only" *MP3: Hockey Night - "Renegades" *MP3: Hockey Night - "Battlestar Scholastica" Hockey Night was the last local band that I never missed. Yes, I am a fan of many, many local artists, but Hockey Night were a priority below no other. They released two full-length albums and one EP. Their LPs, "Rad Zapping" and "Keep Guessing" pretty much changed my life. Riffs. Lathargic vocals. Sweet dudes. It's all there. [...]
