It's an eerily quite week for shows in Toronto. So we're going with alternative entertainment for my picks this week: Toronto Maple Leafs, Jan. 31, Air Canad CentreYou hometown heroes play host to Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Toronto Maple Leafs' website The Superbowl, Feb. 1stLive from Tampa, FL comes the 43rd Superbowl. Stay home, eat nachos, drink beer, and cheer
*If* anything because we've seen the Virgins play the same songs a billion times over the past few years, and they're so low key I wonder if they're having fun anymore. Now HOCKEY on the other hand have us so effing pumped it's ridic. We took in their set at ...
Dear Hockey: Can you kindly return all of the following at your earliest convenience? MGMT's wardrobe, The Strokes' guitar riffs, Avey Tare's stage presence & Pete Doherty's vocal stylings. Thank you very much! MP3: Hockey - Too Fake

Red Wire Black Wire "Compass" mp3 Oft buzzed about Brooklyn group Red Wire Black Wire will be headlining a great bill this Saturday night at Pianos in NY. The fuzzed-out bass tones and high-end synths on RWBW's Compass EP assure the audience that they are indeed listening to dance music, yet, there is something darker and more melancholic about the melodies of these songs. Ultimately though, danceability wins out, with solid four-on-the-floor kick drum hits and throbbing bass lines. Also on Saturday night's bill are newcomers and Capitol [...]

Nope, it's not 4 nights of The Rangers or The Islanders this week, but it's HOCKEY , the Portland band we've been crazy about and playing on the radio show since last May are starting to get the attention they deserve. The UK recently is slapstick about them, now it's time to net the USA. They have four shows in the NYC area happening, with the first one starting tonight at Union Hall in Brooklyn. Jan [...]
I've enthused about this song before . Now there's a video. It's from her forthcoming album To Be Still out next month on Rough Trade. In gig news: Passion Pit and Hockey play a double header in Whelan's on March 1st! Ponytail and Adebisi Shank play the same venue on March 11th! If you like this try: Weekday Jukebox NYE SEBP & AC - MPP Results: [...]

Two of the bands most widely tipped for success in 2009 are set to grace the stage of Whelans on March 1st. Passion Pit (above) & Hockey will perform a double-headliner, giving us a chance to see for ourselves whether the all this hype is justified. This will be all about Passion Pit for me. While their Chunk of Change EP still sounds amazing, Hockey seem pretty weak when one ventures past the (admittedly great) single, 'Too Fake'. Further examination of this phenomenon in the readmore. Regardless, it should [...]
Thanks to The Noises in Our Heads for pointing out what we were waiting to hear - that Passion Pit have confirmed a debut Irish show and in doubly-good news, will be joined by Portland's Hockey in Whelan's on Sunday the 1st of March. Tickets are €15 on sale this Wednesday. Passion Pit - Sleepyhead Related BBC Sound of 2009 Poll agrees with State Podcast 07 - State at CMJ [...]

Portland's Hockey is a band on the verge. There's a great story on how they got here that I'll save for another day. Suffice it to say that these guys are having big fun making music that slyly provides commentary on the whole process of making music. ...

When I moved to Newcastle from the little village I lived in before I expected a new world of musical possibilities, gigs every night and a general involvement in something bigger than going out to a show once a month or less. Turns out I was just a little naive. Because it seems as though, despite the big Carling Academy and a few other great music venues, no bands seem to come here. Future of the Left were due to play here last month, but cancelled, and then when I found out that Bear Hands and Hockey, two [...]

Hockey hail from Portland, Oregon and like the game they throw a mean punch. They list their musical style on myspace as New Wave/Soul (a joke I'm sure, at least the new wave part). Their sound is basically good old fashioned rock 'n' roll to me, although I can definitely hear that soul influence in there. Fans of bands like Kings of Leon or The Strokes will surely enjoy them. They are already [...]

We don't have resolutions at New Year, we have revelations. What can be better than recuperating from the excesses of Shloer-fuelled festive partying than handpicking the 10 most incredible should-be-famous artists to stalk in the next 12 months? This time last year we got a bit overzealous and chose 16 tips for the top, a few of which actually went on to sell more than 16 records. For 2009's hot young things, we have three Scots, one English, two Aussies and four Yanks, starting with a band who we've been listening to [...]
Just like they did last year , the NHL is going to have another old fashioned game of shinny on New Year's Day, but this time it will be at Wrigley Field in Chicago. This year's NHL Winter Classic will feature the Chicago Blackhawks and the Detroit Red Wings in their 701st matchup. The game will be broadcast live on NBC , CBC , RDS and The NHL Network at 1:00 PM ET on January 1, 2009 . Watch the NHL Winter [...]
I actually have a really hard time with 'Best Of' lists each year because it's sometimes hard to put in perspective which bands, songs, albums, etc meant the most to you - which ones you played ALL the songs more than others with just one or two tracks - which ones marked a special moment that year or struck some personal connection. In a world where the iPod and iTunes has changed the way we encounter and devour music, so many have great individual songs, or just good songs, but it takes a real focused effort to turn out 10-13 [...]

Little Hunks This is the final 2008 Pampelmoose edition of the New Music Hour on Portland's 94.7FM. Tonight will be the last show of the year and it's time to take stock of all the great music that I've been able to play from Portland's vibrant music scene. I have 14 songs tonight from some of [...]

If you want something different or just some catchy vibrant music then look no further than the new wave sensation that is Hockey . Now I'll be honest, when I think of new wave bands I imagine weird, ultra-jolly and synthesizer happy misfits but I couldn't be more right. Hockey's sound delivers weird beats and tones that freak out the ear while fantastic synthesizer melodies fill their songs with quality and vibrancy. There lyrics have been well refined and there is a great intellectual feel about the tunes. But yet the band still [...]

It seems everyone's putting out their "best of 20083 lists, with The Wombats (pictured above) being the latest ones to do so. They've tipped Scarlet Harlots (pictured right) for the top next year, naming a new band that has yet to appear on many Proclaiming their love for the band and tipping them for success after mentoring them on T4's Orange unsignedAct, singer Murf declared, "I thought you were going to be good before you even picked up an instrument."
