Interview: Hockey

Hockey - Too Fake (Later With Jools Holland)
A great week of interviews for me this week. The first of which was with Benjamin Grubin, the singer from Portland, OR band Hockey. They are having massive success both here and in the US, with their stellar album Mind Chaos , as well as their relentless live tour. They played Dublin's Academy in September and were riotously sucessful. Here Ben talks about how making a studio album is a little hard work, how they came about their google-hating name, playing the live circuit, and how they've been so warmly embraced on this side of the Atlantic. CMJ 2009: Boys Who Make Dancey Music

CMJ 2009: Boys Who Make Dancey Music Catching up from last weekend - so many activities! OCTOBER 22nd Started the evening at the SPIN offices for a special rooftop performance by Portland, Oregon's Hockey . Like The Rapture and The Virgins before them, these boys know how to get girls dancing. Love love love them. Find songs like "Work," totally irresistible. The Answering [...]

laneway festival: new venue, new lineup

laneway festival: new venue, new lineup You think Laneway Festival . You think St Jeromes . You think all those cool laneways in Melbourne. Well...this year you think wrong. St Jeromes closed it's doors earlier on this year, and after a pretty bad festival this year (punters pissing in the street, massive scheduling probs etc), the organisers have decided to move it. And this time it's not a laneway. It's actually a pretty open area. Footscray Community Arts Centre is where it's at next year. Some may think why?! Footscray?? Isn't that junkie town? Hehe...well yeah, there is that side of it. [...]

Hockey Warm Up for CMJ Showcase With Rooftop Gig

Hockey Warm Up for CMJ Showcase With Rooftop Gig Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Hockey played an intimate set on the rooftop of Spin Magazine's New York headquarters on Thursday, illuminated by just a few stage lights, flashing cameras and the downtown Manhattan skyline. The Portland, Ore. band wore their snuggest jeans for the occasion and powered through a six-song set prior to their CMJ appearance at Mercury Lounge later in the evening. Singer Ben Grubin took turns strutting behind the mic and grabbing an extra pair of drumsticks to keep the [...]

CMJ 2009: A Guide You Might Want to Read

Oh CMJ , rival to SXSW, always with an inferiority complex. It may not get the prized sort of one-off appearances like its Austin sibling (e.g. Kanye West or Jane's Addiction), but that's not to say CMJ can't hold its own. Coupled with the already thriving New York City concert scene, the influx of young talent with the already established indie stars, there's bound to be something for everyone at all hours of the day. That's a good thing and a bad thing. For every act you're pining to see, there's another four or five right behind [...]

Another Hockey match at The Academy

After their Academy gig last month, an Oxegen show and a double headliner with Passion Pit at Whelan's in March, US new wave revivalists Hockey continue their live Irish onslaught with a return to Dublin's Academy on February 28 next year. The band's debut album Mind Chaos is out now, and its blend of infectious power-pop and dance-punk workouts really kicks off on the live stage. Touring keyboard player Ryan Dolliver had to miss the band's last Academy show after he "spent 2 days in a dublin hospital [...]

Review: Hockey - Mind Chaos (* * * *)

Review: Hockey - Mind Chaos (* * * *) Portland dance-rock band Hockey may be new to the scene, but they've already covered quite a bit of ground. They've toured on either side of the Atlantic, appearing on both the Jools Holland show and Jimmy Fallon, and created all sorts of well-deserved buzz on early singles like the infectious "Too Fake." After hearing a few tunes from the band, I was excited to get my hands on a copy of their debut album - Mind Chaos - which was recently released and mostly delivers on the sizable amount of hype with a healthy dose of both understated [...]

CMJ 2009 Preview: Five Must-See Bands

CMJ 2009 Preview: Five Must-See Bands Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Count Five Next Tuesday, Oct. 20, marks the start of the CMJ Music Marathon, a five-day festival in New York that features over 1200 artists. Unlike most festivals that are held on one site, bands at CMJ will perform at dozens of venues in Manhattan and Brooklyn from noon to the wee hours of the morning, so fans will have to choose their shows -- not to mention their commuting routes -- wisely. To help out, here are our picks for [...]

Hockey on Fallon

Hockey on Fallon True story. I always wanted to go see Hockey and I started going through some pictures I took through my Flickr page. I came across a set of pictures I took of Hockey at Monolith a year ago. Crazy. Hockey-Learn to Lose [mp3] Tweet This Post

Mini Wayne Gretzky

Hockey has finally made it onto Our Kitchen Sink, and surprisingly it has nothing to do with Bob Probert challenging John Daly to a drinking contest, followed by a recreation of Over the Top. Instead, we've got a burgeoning Wayne Gretzky who is the pee wee's answer to the And 1 basketball team. Nasty. No related posts.

Portugal the Man Cover Three Dog Night and MGMT

Portugal the Man Cover Three Dog Night and MGMT Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News It might have been a chilly night, but it was toasty inside Schuba's Tavern in Chicago late Saturday when Portugal the Man finally took the stage. With a haze of smoke and a minimal lighting scheme, the band appeared shrouded in mystery as bursts of strobes and rainbow colored laser lights occasionally lit up the otherwise dark stage. Lead singer John Gourley had a unique style of performing sideways to the audience instead of being centered in front of the microphone. As the [...]

Exclusive Interview with Jerm Reynolds from Hockey!

Exclusive Interview with Jerm Reynolds from Hockey! You guys have admitted that the name "Hockey" comes from your sense of humor moreso than any interest in the sport. Since your album is called "Mind Chaos", do you hope to inspire chaos in people's minds when they listen to your music? Mind chaos is more about the way that we see the world in 2009, which is this beautifully, fractured hyper-individualized insanity we think that might be a result of the internet or technology in general. We live in a world where it's more and more about the individual and the individual's opinion. When [...]

Portugal. The Man, Hockey bring Portland sound

Portugal. The Man, Hockey bring Portland sound There's really interesting music coming out of Portland. Two of the bands responsible - Hockey and Portugal. The Man - are playing a pair of shows at Schubas this weekend. Portugal. The Man has a throwback sound that reminds me of the '70s. Its single, "People Say," is one of my favorite songs this year. Hockey has a fun, pop sound and may be destined for (gasp) commercial radio play. Amid an onslaught of new releases this past week, Hockey put out its debut album "Mind Chaos" on a major label. Speaking [...]

Hockey: "Mind Chaos" (album review)

We all know that Hockey is the greatest sport on Earth. There's really no rational way to argue against that fact. So what do we expect from a band that names itself after that most glorious of sports? The band Hockey released its full length debut album Mind Chaos this week. The record is a delightful blend of pop, dance, and indie music which should appeal fans of acts like CSS and MGMT.
