A great week of interviews for me this week. The first of which was with Benjamin Grubin, the singer from Portland, OR band Hockey. They are having massive success both here and in the US, with their stellar album Mind Chaos , as well as their relentless live tour. They played Dublin's Academy in September and were riotously sucessful. You think Laneway Festival . You think St Jeromes . You think all those cool laneways in Melbourne. Well...this year you think wrong. St Jeromes closed it's doors earlier on this year, and after a pretty bad festival this year (punters pissing in the street, massive scheduling probs etc), the organisers have decided to move it. After their Academy gig last month, an Oxegen show and a double headliner with Passion Pit at Whelan's in March, US new wave revivalists Hockey continue their live Irish onslaught with a return to Dublin's Academy on February 28 next year. There's really interesting music coming out of Portland. Two of the bands responsible - Hockey and Portugal. The Man - are playing a pair of shows at Schubas this weekend. Portugal. The Man has a throwback sound that reminds me of the '70s. Its single, "People Say," is one of my favorite songs this year. We all know that Hockey is the greatest sport on Earth. There's really no rational way to argue against that fact. So what do we expect from a band that names itself after that most glorious of sports? The band Hockey released its full length debut album Mind Chaos this week. The record is a delightful blend of pop, dance, and indie music which should appeal fans of acts like CSS and MGMT.
