Another of our one-per-day DC faves of 2011...more til the end of next week. You know you're onto something special when words fail, when comparisons even to the most brilliant game changers of music in the past 40 years don't make sense, when you just want to give up searching for adequate verbiage and just simply listen... again... and again. We've been meaning to write about Holcombe Waller for a while now -- his album Into the Dark Unknown did, after all, come out in [...]

Watch the landscapes and intimate moments in Holcombe Waller's video for Buffy Sainte-Marie's 'Qu'appelle Valley, Saskatchewan.'

The music of Portland, OR-based singer-songwriter Holcombe Waller is considerably more artistic than simply musical, deep and dark with powerful poignancy. His latest work, Into The Dark Unknown , actually started as a stage production, not an album. So it's no surprise that the video for his cover of Canadian and Cree singer Buffy Saint-Marie's "Qu'Appelle Valley, Saskatchewan" is chock full of representative imagery. Based on a poem by co-director/production designer Bowen Ames (Waller himself was the other director), the clip features three juxtaposed scenes: Waller as a seamstress setting out [...]
Arriving at SXSW without a single show booked and no venue to play, Holcombe Waller opted for a impromptu set inside a room at the Driskill Hotel in Austin . When Holcombe's "Waiting for Lightening to Strike Tour" came through NY last month he brought the intimate "Bed-In Sessions" and friends to Midtown Manhattan's Ace Hotel.

Photo Credit: Louisa Podlich On Saturday, June 25th, Haley Bonar graced the downstairs "stage" at the Sixth & I Historic Synagogue along with Daniel Martin Moore and Holcombe Waller on The Waiting for Lightning to Strike Tour . I quote the word "stage" because other than a slight step in the ground, it was about as intimate as a living room jam session. No more than fifty people sat in chairs around cocktail tables [...]
If you haven't heard of Holcombe Waller yet, now's your chance. Get a ticket and head over to The End on Elliston tomorrow and check this guy out. Waller has a soothing, more versatile voice than most singer songwriters, and he packs more emotion into three lines than most artists can in 3 minutes. His videos and songs have an eccentricity to them to be expected from almost any musician, but there's something particularly compelling about his vocals and his sincere, honest lyrics. His full length, Into The [...]

On a rainy, dreary Wednesday night, Berklee's Cafe 939 offered a cozy sanctuary from the elements outside and a strong line-up of three thoughtful songwriters and their bands. Sadly, few were there to witness. This certainly isn't the first time we've seen this happen. The thin crowd recalled a Wye Oak show where musicians outnumbered fans and a Cryptacize show with ten people and overflowing toilets. Considering this felt like a private show with a dozen or so new friends, I hesitate to document this special evening. So instead [...]
I get like a gazillion emails every day from musicians, PR people, etc. It's hard to weed through the submissions. Sometimes a name catches my eye - like when someone tours with Haley Bonar. That someone is Holcombe Waller. He's album is getting a national release from Napoleon Records/Redeye Distribution. Check out the video below and go see Waller, Bonar and Daniel Martin Moore! Tour Dates "Waiting for Lightning to Strike Tour" With Haley Bonar and Daniel Martin Moore: 06/21: Brooklyn, NY @ The [...]
Every so often I run across a guitar riff that gives me goosebumps, this is one. The combination of subtle and beautiful strumming with great vocals and complimentary strings make this one a can't miss folk gem. The song comes from his latest release Into The Dark Unknown, which you should all go buy. Check out his Myspace and shower praise on him. The song hit my inbox as a promotion for a tour
Holcombe Waller has announced new West Coast tour dates with Jenny O. and Barcelona, as well as new Northeast/Midwest tour dates as a triple co-headline with Haley Bonar and Daniel Martin Moore. Adding to his previously announced tour dates with Chris Pureka, Laura Gibson and several performing arts centers, Holcombe will be criss-crossing the country all Spring and Summer.
You know you're onto something special when words fail, when comparisons even to the most brilliant game changers of music in the past 40 years don't make sense, when you just want to give up searching for adequate verbiage and just simply listen... again... and again. We've been meaning to write about Holcombe Waller for a while now -- his album Into the Dark Unknown did, after all, come out in February. Maybe it just seemed a little too daunting of a task. Let's just say that this isn't an album for everyone -- but for [...]
AGESANDAGES, LAKE, THE GOLDEN HOURS ( The Woods , 6637 SE Milwaukie) Read our article on LAKE . WIRE ( Dante's , 1 SW 3rd) The original art punks, UK's legendary Wire, have a string of vital recordings stretching from 1977's indispensable Pink Flag to this year's sharply intelligent Red Barked Tree . Portland-based singer-songwriter Holcombe Waller 's music has consistently been likened to that of Nick Drake, Jeff Buckley, and Antony Hegarty (of Antony and the Johnsons) throughout his career. Sure, some biographical parallels surface (theater thoroughly interests both Hegarty and Waller, and a solid case can be made for the sonic similarities between Waller's high-pitched cooing and Drake's signature style), but the primary and important quality the artists all share is the minimal, yet inescapable, raw and emotion-ridden aspect of their music that so many try and fail to emulate. An attentive listen to Waller's latest work, Into the [...]

above banner image photo by Kava Gorna So I found this little gem while looking into Waller's upcoming album "Into The Dark Unknown" (which is beautiful to say the least) and I had to post on it. The song is from a collection of out-takes from Waller's previous album "Troubled Times" which are chock full of album worthy songs like this one. Come on, Jolene ( originally penned and made famous by Ms. Dolly Parton )...you can't NOT post on it. Bloggers love them some covers afterall... With [...]

www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoRvtr c2q6o I was just this week introduced to Holcombe Waller. I think he's got an incredible voice and sound. I'd describe his music as a cross between Seven Swans Sufjan Stevens and Rufus Wainwright. Maybe even some James Taylor. Anyway, the video for "Bored of Memory" is a recreation of his first date with his boyfriend. Homophobic people should try to stomach it -- no pun intended. The video directed by Alicia J. Rose and Holcombe Waller is wonderfully shot and the footage looks awesome [...]

Holcombe Waller's song Risk Of Change knocked me on my ass late last year with its gently fingerpicked guitars and poignant Leonerd Cohen meets Edward Hopper vignettes, and after sharing it here on MOKB, we left the door open to Waller. Of course, we had a good feeling that he had more than a few good tunes left in the tank, not to mention a new record, Into The Dark Unknown , dropping on February 22. Into The Dark Unknown is [...]

I feel like MOKB has held up our end of the singer-songwriter bargain in 2010. From reporting Sufjan Stevens' every move to gassing up the Anthony D'Amato bandwagon and training the spotlight on the reclusive Marco Mahler , we've done the legwork. And since Holcombe Waller was seemingly dropped on our doorstep, I see no reason to stop now. Waller's brand of chamber-flavored folk has understandably garnered him more than a few comparisons to the aforementioned Stevens. That being said, after enjoying Risk Of Change a couple [...]
