I'm really liking the jingle jangle of this guitar…on this Thanksgive Eve. Meet Real Estate out of New Jersey. This foursome sings songs about the Jersey shores, Pensacola shores also known as the redneck Riviera. They sing about rolexes getting lost in the sand. All the things we go through in our childhood, yet my memories include a Timex, Casio (or maybe a Swatch in my rolling in the dollar years) getting lost in dirt or weeds. Either way, I enjoy their songs very much. Reminds me a little of [...]
Last night I caught the Brooklyn stop of the Evangelicals/Holiday Shores tour, which continues for five more days. Rarely have I seen two acts so perfectly suited to perform together: Both reference 1960s pop and garage rock while putting their different spins on it--and without sounding like simple regurgitation, the way a lot of "retro" bands do no matter what era they're copying. The first band I saw at Union Hall was Tallahassee, Florida's Holiday Shores. When you can say that a group's synth sounds evoke the classic Moog so perfectly, there isn't much more praise to [...]

The fantastic Evangelicals / Holiday Shores double-bill rolled into Brooklyn Wednesday night representing both sides of the same skewed-pop coin. Heads, we've got Holiday Shores, a Tallahassee-repping quartet (and recent Band of the Week ) specializing in urgent sun-dappled pop with just a hint of something sinister lurking beneath. Tails, it's Evangelicals, the Norman-based psych-pop outfit most poised to take the mantle of resident OK weirdness from Wayne Coyne and company, an exercise in indulging the dark side of pop melodies with traces of sunbeams cracking the clouds. Sunny with a [...]

I'm going to do something different here. Have you ever had the experience of going to a show, only to find out that the band you were there to see wasn't the headliner? If you go to shows a lot, it happens, especially when each band on the bill is at similar places in their careers. Well that's exactly what happened the other night at D.C.'s ever so tiny Red and Black. While the Evangelicals were set to be the nights closer, Holiday Shores were the reason I was there. It wasn't anything personal, just happenstance that they [...]

Friday the 13th was made a little less spooky by the Oklahoma gentlemen Evangelicals bringing their touring selves to Glassworks . Along with the OK Evangelicals, who are way more than just OK, were Holiday Shores and Idiot Glee . Though, I'm blaming everything about the evening on Friday the 13th. It seemed that the only people not afraid of going out of the house to shows on Friday the 13th are those darned music bloggers. Don't be afraid, non music bloggers of Louisville, we few at this amazing show (very few [too few]) [...]

I Guess I'm Floating and Hot Brown Mess are bringing to town a fantastic show with the Evangelicals and the Holiday Shores . The Evangelicals are a highly touted band from Norman, Oklahoma (home of The Flaming Lips) and they have been making major waves since their debut album, So Gone in 2006. I had a chance to talk with front-man Josh Jones today and, even after the greater success of their 2008 sophomore album, The Evening [...]

The Floridian tide brought us Holiday Shores last night. The CMJ darlings from a couple of weeks ago came well equipped with lots of reverb to deliver the goods. The quartet proved that their full album is worthy of all A Side status, even when it's played live. The translation proved to be more effective than their recorded material. The polished material on "Columbus'd the Whim" that plays like a "Wall of Sound" produced gem fails to display the dexterity that Holiday Shores is capable of performing live (much like last night). The abbreviated [...]

Hot Brown Mess , a new music promotions collective I am a part of, and I Guess I'm Floating are pleased to present Midwestern psychedelic pop purveyors Evangelicals with freewheeling sun-washed garage psych collective Holiday Shores and regional Brian Wilson incarnation Idiot Glee this Friday at Glassworks in Louisville. The show is short notice, sure, but it's gonna rule. I has tickets to give you... Alright, so the contest. I've been obsessed with Scott Hansen's design work on ISO50 . That's what inspired the design of this show flier. [...]
My buddy Mike is working in the music industry for Sonicbids . As such, he gets hooked up with all kinds of free shwag, including a badge to this year's CMJ Music Marathon, or whatever they're calling it now; he was gracious enough to write up a fantastic recap for us (and Sonicbids ). Mike's an all around mensch who knows the ins and outs of the business and has been putting me on to new music since our high school days. Hopefully we'll be [...]
Wasn't this what the Vampire Weekend backlash was concerned about: an army of Afropop-inspired bands comprised of white guys? Or was it afraid of waves of jaunty guitars and splashes of bouncy hi-hats? Either way, Holiday Shores could be considered the manifestation of those fears, but when a track is as immediate and engaging as the swirling melodies of "Phones Don't Feud" there's not much to complain about. I Guess I'm Floating and Hot Brown Mess are bringing to town a fantastic show with the Evangelicals and the Holiday Shores . Not only that, but they have hooked us up with a pair of tickets to give to one of our readers. Comment below with your favorite band originating from the mid-west (excluding Evangelicals and the Flaming Lips). We'll announce a winner on Wednesday. Good luck. More details below... ![[IGIF Presents] Evangelicals & Holiday Shores - Nov. 13th](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2107774_lg.jpg)
Exciting news on the IGIF front as we continue to gear up for our "Floater's Freedom" celebration. Always looking to expand, I'm proud to (finally) announce our first concert production outside of sunny SXSW. A week from today (Nov. 13 th ) we'll be presenting Evangelicals and Holiday Shores at Glassworks in Louisville! This will be the first time I've seen Evangelicals since our stellar SXSW party last year and the very first time I've ever seen Holiday Shores. [...]

Holiday Shores was one of the toasts of CMJ last week caught up w/ Fader to record the Floridians covering an oldie, but a goodie. The guys even got into costume for a great doo wop version of, "Up on the Roof". Make sure to catch them on a great double bill w/Evangelicals . I agree with The Village Voice in that CMJ shows are more like coronations than introductions. While I had a press badge for CMJ via BTR , I didn't end up using it at all. Instead, I took a pretty low-key approach. The shows that I went to were free, unofficial CMJ, non-CMJ, or someone was kind enough to put me on a list. Instead of running around between downtown Manhattan and Brooklyn to see the buzziest of the buzz, I kept to a small list of bands that I'd been wanting to [...]

Real Estate played a bunch of shows at CMJ last week, one being the Chocolate Bobka / Underwater Peoples / Two Syllable showcase at the Delancy (basement - grotty sweat box playing host to lo-fi bands/ upstairs - DJs playing mashups and Lady Gaga). They went on around 3am, after great sets by Holiday Shores, Pill Wonder , Frat Dad and some others. Everyone was pretty drunk and sweaty by this point, but they managed to play one of the best sets of the week, where [...]
Caught by the Adorea Recording Studio at Hamden CT's the Space, here's our live session with Florida's Holiday Shores. The band came up to Connecticut before a set of shows at CMJ, and their muscular live energy is nothing to shrug off. Holiday Shores' latest release is Columbus'd the Whim, and here's their live set:A Live Session w/Holiday ShoresMP3s from the session:Holiday Shores- Days
