I think this was the 19th CMJ I have attended and though they don't call it the Music Marathon anymore, it still feels like it. SXSW is like that too, shows all day and night, but when you live in NYC and you're expected to do work too... you're running on fumes by the end. There weren't as many big names this year which turned out to be good. Most of the bands I saw were either entirely new to me, or I'd never seen them live before. Here's a rundown. So, CMJ. It's begun. This year we decided to get our shots in early, in some sort of a sado-masochistic attempt to be as lifeless by Sunday as possible, apparently. That means a party last night, and a party tonight. For Tuesday night's bill, we joined forces with Popgun Booking to present NJ wit/punk firebrands Titus Andronicus. They played for over 90 minutes and to countless fist-pumps, until roughly 2AM, and thus were perfect for our ad hoc shattered-by-Sunday strategy. Canadian four-piece band Hollerado made a huge splash in the Internet waves last year thanks to their video for "Americanarama," and they're back to tout another low-budget, one-take masterpiece for the latest single off of their debut album, "Record in a Bag." Although the video for "Got To Lose" doesn't involve any people in boxes for a "Human 8-bit vibe," Greg Jardin returns as the director for the new clip, which features elaborate umbrella choreography this time around.
