Soulful and homely Hollis Brown 's " Ride On The Train " is pure Americana , the likes of which have been laying practically dormant this year. This track is timeless with its all encompassing yet nearly autobiographical lyrics, there is always a place for a song like " Ride On The Train ." Much of the strength, not only with this cut but with the entire " Nothing And The Famous No One EP" , is drawn from it's live feel, it was a great move recording the album live to [...]

It's a holiday celebrated by few, but those few treat it like Christmas morning. In fact, some might consider it better than Christmas morning: Record Store Day. Since its inception in 2007, countless vinyl enthusiasts have woken up - on Saturday morning, no less - to patrol the streets in their pajamas, eventually taking up real estate outside their favorite record store, all in the hopes that they'll snag priceless soon-to-be artifacts that, more or less, give them bragging rights. It's relentless, it's addicting, but it's pastime. Consequence of Sound looks forward to [...]

The penultimate day of my fourth SXSW was definitely the longest in my history of SX's. Arriving at 10:30am at the Elvis Presley-themed Beale Street Tavern to host a show, I was out on the town for 16 hours to follow. Opening the morning, Austin's Indie-meets-retro rock quartet, Ghost Bunny, and solo, blues-rock multi-instrumentalist and loop-master, Walker Lukens, got the ball rolling. Most attendants woke up and arrived for a bevy of Brooklyn bands: Black Taxi , The Courtesy Tier , and The Click Clack Boom . The string of East Coasters was broken by LA- born [...]

Words // Scott Pingeton Hollis Brown Those lamenting the fact that Middle Brother is no more and Delta Spirit seems to be shunning their folkier side, I give you Hollis Brown. Catchy, raucous, organic, gritty, urban folk/soul rave-ups - the sonic middle ground between classic rock and the new crop of modern indie-folk rockers. The NYC-based band's upcoming Nothing & The Famous No One EP is out April 3 and, fittingly, features a guest appearance from Deer Tick's [...]

The band's raw, electric garage rock album was recording in Nashville during the Summer of 2011 and was produced by Adam Landry (Deer Tick, Middle Brother). It is available on April 3, 2012. In my younger years I used to get to shows too early and had to wait around for the opening band which was a good thing because I picked up some favorite bands in the process. Well, of late, I've been rather late to shows and end up missing most of the opening act. I apologize, as a music enthusiast I should know how to schedule my time better. That being said, I did miss all but the last 30 seconds of Hollis Brown 's set. I've never seen that band before so I would have at least liked [...]

The album, recorded in Nashville this past summer, follows many of the tones found in Landry's previous projects such as bluesy riffs and scratchy vocals. To give the record additional authenticity, though, the band used vintage analog tapes and recorded [...]
