Counting collaborations and her work with Thee Headcoates, Holly Golightly 's long career extends well beyond the twenty album mark. It's an enviable work rate and a surprisingly successful one given that she remains not only a going concern but one with a large and dedicated following, made all the more impressive considering she's never given a toss about current trends, or indeed particularly current sounds. Not for the first time, 'Long Distance' finds Holly upping her musical sticks from Medway's garage scene to the lazy blues of the Mississippi delta. With the aid of her [...]

We must love one another or die. -September 1, 1939 By 1955, W. H. Auden had changed his mind. He insisted all future printings of his poem alter the line to "We must love one another and die." His publishers fought him - the people loved it just as it was. But he was adamant. Determined. It ate him up inside that something he had written did not reflect what he considered the truth. That nothing, not even love, will save any of us from death. I love love. [...]

British singer/songwriter, Holly Golightl y, is finallyyyyy returning to Nashville to play us some of her garage rock/70's RnB. Strange combination, right? Right. Her music is difficult to categorize into just a few genres because she is such a prolific musician, with over 15 albums released on various record labels since 1999 when she left garage rock backing trio, Thee Headcoatees for Billy Childish's The Headcoats . She has collaborated with The White Stripes and The Greenhornes , (and she just so happens to be the lead singer on [...]

photos by David Andrako Holly Golightly & The Brokeoffs " Holly Golightly was born in London and named after the heroine in Truman Capote's novella Breakfast at Tiffany's. She fell under the spell of American roots music the minute she heard her first Stax single and started her musical career playing guitar and singing in punk bands like Thee Headcoatees. Golightly started recording her own albums in the mid-'90s, drawing on the American singles in her massive collection for influence. She [...]

Ignoring performance norms, a thin older man in oversized clothes, messy pony-tail, and cheekbone chops breaks into song. "My heart loses time / Oh where has it gone / Your love has the answers / In the mountains of home." When his sweet song ends, he mumbles, "I'm Malcolm," and moves his swollen knuckles quickly to his next country-folk tune, brimming with heavy picking and drowning in his own gravel-rasp. Barely keeping all four legs of his chair on the floor for an entire song, Malcolm Holcombe played folk standards and depressing [...]

Country and blues reflected in a cracked funhouse mirror Holly Golightly and the Brokeoffs (comprised of Golightly and multi-instrumentalist Lawyer Dave) continue to mash the hard-charging folk dynamic of Richard & Mimi Farina with a primitive (rather than the oft-labeled lo-fi), live-sounding recording aesthetic. The percussion prevalent on 2008's Dirt Don't Hurt continues to add punctuation, giving several of these tracks, such as the exotic "Burn, Oh Junk Pile, Burn," the off-kilter feel of mid-period Tom Waits. But these blues are more hill-bred than Bowery, and the jittery [...]
