Factory-working Stockholm punks Holograms just kicked off a North American tour, and to coincide with their journey, they've released a video for "Fever," the closing cut off their terrific self-titled debut LP . The clip is an assault of extremely bizarre and colorful prismatic images that seems designed to trigger seizures in certain viewers. Check it out. Read More...

For a minute, it looked like Holograms were totally fucked. The four young Swedes held several pow-wows onstage while their suddenly and inexplicably defunct Korg keyboard stood on the periphery like the proverbial elephant in the room. “Yeah, it’s going to be a bad show,” guitarist and vocalist Anton Spetz said to synth player and brother Filip, who gamely stood in the audience while the rest of his band played on. “This thing doesn’t work, so we’re going to play without it,” he told the audience in a much more audible aside. And, remarkably, play they did. [...]

Photo source: Patricksloan.net After taking last week off (sorry to those of you that checked in and found nothing!), we're back with this week's suggested New York City concerts. Today is Labor Day (and the one and only Hannah Angst's birthday) which means that summertime is unofficially over. While that's sad news to all of us that won't have any more summer Fridays, there's plenty to be excited about. Like the fact that Chairlift , Azealia Banks , Patrick Watson , Sondre [...]

Visiting the parents is often a stressful time. Despite their incessantly busy schedules, they have actually learned to relax in retirement despite their hectic lifestyle. I visited them two weekends ago now. Hence the absence of an August 17 radio show recap; there was none. Instead, I participated in my brother's wedding. Having just one brother, this was a first. And I'm very excited to have a new sister. He and Diane dated five years before their engagement, just like Andi and myself. (Their engagement story, [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive , Music Appreciation Frazer Harrison, Getty It might not be blatantly obvious, but Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine draws quite a bit of influence from hip-hop. Her ethereal pop-anthems are a far cry from the heavy beats and rhymes of rappers, but Welch assures us that the similarities are there. "What really inspires me about hip-hop is the idea that you don't really [...]
Party like it's 1979! Captured tracks,2012 7.6 / 10.0 If you're expecting Sweden's Holograms to serve the usual Captured Tracks fare of shimmery dream-pop, you're going to be in for a big surprise. Instead of emulating the shoegaze-y sounds of the mid '80s the Holograms look to late 70s punk rock for [...]
Punk was never about subtlety, and Holograms are a perfect example of this. With the Swedish quartet’s debut being released this week, their statement of intent was evident from the opening song, with foreboding strums of the bass in the appropriately named ‘Monolith’. Throughout the album, the bass and drums play a vital part in creating a frantic and energetic sound that pushes the listener around, giving few moments of rest. Whilst there is a slight sense that this band have just aimed at ticking all the boxes for a punk album from first impressions, some [...]

Douglas Martin is back with scuffed Chucks. Now that we’ve reached the Age of Iceage, it appears Americans have uncovered a side of Northeast Europe most have been unaware of. After the Danish teens released my second-favorite record of 2011 , we’ve experienced a wave of loud guitars and heavily accented English. With bands like Vår, Lower, and the groups featured in the recent Impose feature on Copenhagen , punk rock is about to be Scandinavia’s biggest export since Volvo station wagons. (Not to speak lightly of the region’s contingent of fashion models. [...]
BOSSES at The X-Factor are reportedly lining up holograms of stars such as Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse and Elvis Presley to boost ratings. Rather than guest acts on the show - which in the past have included the likes of Beyonce and Kylie Minogue - holograms of deceased superstars could perform alongside contestants. A show insider said: "Imagine Elvis or Amy Winehouse at the grand final. It would be incredible TV and an amazing experience for contestants. "The technology's there and has been used on several big stages. The X-Factor final is perfect for something like this. [...]

Since it’s the Olympics and everyone’s all filled with pride for their respective nations and such, let’s think for a sec about Sweden; during the Opening Ceremonies, they were a collection of bright blue and yellow, angelic blonde heads bobbing up and down, smiling in joy. But don’t forget that, musically, Sweden is the country best known for its large, raw death metal scene. The contrast is sort of reminiscent of how daylight works in the Scandinavian region: long days filled with nothing but sunshine, and then, months of pure darkness. On “You Are Ancient [...]

Stockholm based Holograms have been plugging up my ears all day. I've literally only gotten my ears on this one track, "Monolith", but it's a good one. It's like some sort of hybrid punk rock, or maybe it's just rock...either way, the first time I heard it on A Volta I was hooked. It doesn't start out trying to grab you instantly - that doesn't happen til the beat kicks in and the guitar starts crunching all over the place. It gets you going quick, adrenaline pumping. I just wish I knew what he was saying [...]

Punk gets its rocks off on the fact that most of its musicians are poorly trained, if at all, and have little sense of well-being while banging away at low quality instruments they probably bought secondhand from a pawn shop that may or may not deal in human trafficking when the lights are out. Such is almost certainly the case with Holograms, the Stockholm-based quartet who seek to reconcile the resentment of postmodernism with the emotional, melodic sensitivities of punk in a post-White Stripes world. The band’s self-titled debut album, Holograms , plays out with all this [...]

Miss Management With her debut album Jewellery , Surrey's Mica Levi - professionally known as Micachu - was responsible for one of 20092s most unique albums - a clattering, noisy, collection of songs that sounded like they were created by a rummage shop collapsing on itself but was still unquestionably pop - albeit on the fringes - and compelling. Three years later, Levi has returned with a follow-up in Never , due July 24, and the whole thing is currently available to stream courtesy of [...]
In recent years, it’s Sweden’s pop music scene that has garnered the majority of the attention. Robyn has launched a full scale invasion with turns opening across the states for acts as massive as Coldplay and more independently minded acts like The Radio Dept. are releasing their best material to date. But there’s something else lurking just beneath the surface of all this Swedish output. There’s always been this dark side to Sweden’s artistic consciousness, manifest most evidently in the work of their great filmmakers. Ingmar Bergman so often dealt with themes of facing death and the great void beyond [...]
Sweden's Holograms aren't the most original band on the block, but their take on post-punk is enjoyably passionate, catchy, and dark. WATCH THE REVIEW
