The Ports EP by J57 In Memory of: Bryan "Ports" Coyle. I dedicate this project to the memory of one of my best friends that left the world on March 13, 2012. Ports taught me how to rhyme - how to count bars, flow patterns, freestyle, etc. He also introduced me to the indie hip hop scene in the late 902s & changed my life forever. There would have never been a J57 if there had never been a Ports. Dedicating this project to him is the very [...]
Back with another stormer, The Doctor's Orders presents Fatlip of The Pharcyde and Homeboy Sandman (Stones Throw) doing a live set at East Village on Friday 8th June. With support from Spin... [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]

Homeboy Sandman is one of the most exciting recent additions to the Stones Throw roster. The New York MC has released two EPs of strung out, hyper-literate hip-hop on the California label, and has also turned in some excellent guest appearances (see particularly his verse on Gensu Dean's recent 'Ramesses' ). 'Look Out' is the opening track from his latest EP, Chimera , and it is a pretty perfect indication of what it is that makes Sandman so special. The delivery, which sees cascading lines continuing, unbroken, apparently ad infinitum, is [...]

Despite the fact I typically hate recycling press releases, the bruising details behind Gensu Dean's "Ramesses" are so well described by Mello Music Group's promo team, I couldn't help but [...]

It's been a minute since we posted some new Gensu Dean...and this one here is a BANGER, featuring two WIB usuals, 7eventhirty & homeboy sandman. "Ramesses" is a term for ancient Egyptian royalty, Pharaohs to be specific. If Hip-Hop was Kemet, The Imperial Gensu Dean would be among the regal few. At a time when

Ramesses (f. 7evenThirty & Homeboy Sandman) by Gensu Dean "Ramesses" is a term for ancient Egyptian royalty, Pharaohs to be specific. If Hip-Hop was Kemet, The Imperial Gensu Dean would be among the regal few. At a time when the music is drowned in a sea of thin synths and weak stock drums, Dean consciously keeps it analog, relying on the tried and true SP-1200 and stacks of records. For his newest single, "Ramesses", Gensu Dean enlists two up-and-coming rhyme kings in their own right, the dexterous Homeboy Sandman and the [...]

"Looking for work, looking for worth, perhaps looking for words." Homeboy Sandman has been really on point with the videos and singles from his Chimera EP . I've been digging everything he sends our way, and that trend continues with his latest video for "Hold Your Head". The record is slow moving and somber, but in the end carries a positive message of continuing on through these trying times. It also features a cameo from Peter Rosenberg, who is everywhere lately. Watch it below.

There's rap songs, and then there are rap songs that make you wanna learn every word – the cadence, the flow, the rhythm. The songs that you wanna bump in your crappy car factory stereo system and pound your steering wheel to (and who cares if you end a sentence in a preposition?). There's rap songs so good you don't even need a proper chorus – just some mean-mug humming. That's Homeboy Sandman's "Mine All Mine." The Queens, N.Y.-based MC dropped his Chimera EP via Stones Throw on Tuesday, but "Mine All Mine" came [...]
According to the infallible tandem of Wikipedia and Greek mythology, the chimera is a "monstrous fire-breathing female creature of Lycia in Asia Minor, composed of the parts of multiple animals: upon the body of a lioness with a tail that ended in a snake's head, the head of a goat arose on her back at the center of her spine." So it sort of looks like Wiz Khalifa and Amber Rose making out. For Homeboy Sandman, the chimera is a new metaphor for the wild style. The word has been passed down to us as a synonym for [...]

Stones Throw supergroup The Stepkids ' debut album is an enjoyable, if frustrating affair. It's chock full of pretty little melodic ideas, but it's so damn floaty it often seems impossible to actually hold onto. This remix of 'Suburban Dream' is a perfect illustration of what that record could have been, if only it had been infused with slightly more hip-hop testosterone. Given a delightfully brazen boom-bap rhythm section, and used as a bed for two of contemporary hip-hop's most unashamedly erudite rappers, the track takes on an entirely new life. Stream the remix below [...]
MP3: Homeboy Sandman - "I Do Whatever I Want" Put aside your pre-conceived notions of Homeboy Sandman. Contrary to what his name might suggest, he isn't trying to resurrect the artifacts of hip-hop's past: Sandman doesn't wear gold chains or MCM shades, and you probably won't see him toting a boom box. In many ways, Sandman is the anti-MC. After graduating from an Ivy League university, he enrolled in Hofstra Law School before dropping out to rhyme full-time. And while others brag about their achievements, Sandman stays relatively quiet. He [...]
