Here is part three of four on who to see at Pop Montreal this year. I will be attending this year’s festival from September 19 – 22. I forgot to mention that my goal is try to see the acts that I know won't be playing Ottawa. This is for September 21th and here are my picks on who to see. This might change on the day of. So if you really want me to see your set, you must give me a really good reason! [...]

Six producers worth their salt is a weekly column which features six relevant, up-and-coming, under-exposed, or disruptively innovative musicians in a particular genre-space. Every Friday we’ll put together a list of a half-dozen must-listen artists that are – or we expect to be – making waves in the coming months. Everybody loves pop music. As human beings, we are instinctively drawn to catchy hooks. I can't say I've ever met someone in my life who does not enjoy a good pop song (anyone who says they do not is either lying or an alien). Thus, the [...]

Well, Divine Fits are a supergroup. The band is composed of Spoon frontman Britt Daniel, former Wolf Parade / Handsome Furs singer-songwriter Dan Boeckner, and drummer Sam Brown of New Bomb Turks . All formidable talents in their own right, expectations were naturally sky high upon the announcement of the group's existence a few months ago. Let's go right ahead and get the initial reservations of bloat and excess that go along with the supergroup tag out of the way immediately, though. Over the course of an all too brief [...]

The first set of acts have been announced for this year's Constellations Festival . Among the initial line-up are Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, Kindness, Hooded Fang and LA trio Haim as well as local acts Hookworms and Swimming Lessons . This year's festival takes place on Saturday November 10th at Leeds Met University. Stay tuned for the new round of acts to be announced in due course.

I came for the food and stayed for the music. Summerworks opening party took place at the Great Hall on Thursday night and I basically went because there was free food catered by the Lakeview and I was also hoping to score a few free drink tickets from media/publicity people. Sadly, no free drinks came my way because this was a fund starved theatre festival and not say, SXSW Interactive where someone would probably pour champagne down my throat if I just asked. To curb my disappointment, I headed for the deep fried [...]

Purity Ring @ Wrongbar: photo by Michael Ligon I went a little less hardcore during NXNE this year and yet I'm still late on posting about it. Overall there were some good new artists I'd discovered year this although no one had really grabbed me outright like some artists had in previous years. With that said let's get to it. Wednesday June 13, 2012 I started off the first day of the festival, Wednesday, first picking up my media pass at the Hyatt Regency and [...]

by teepoo By Saturday, I was practically dying of tiredness, but I was up early already for the Kops vinyl sale at 10am. The M for Montreal boat cruise was a lovely relaxing event and dude, it's on a concert on a boat . Kicking things off was the slightly hungover looking Hooded Fang . Despite playing multiple shows (as Phedre and Hooded Fang ), they managed to still play [...]

by teepoo The most bizarro act prize goes to Hooded Fang , side project Phedre. It's so much different stage presence wise than Hooded Fang. Phedre was quite the spectacle. It was like part brothel, part dance party on stage. Definitely one of the more unique sets I've seen. Oh and here's a new track: Video Gallery

This split 123 sees us working with the youngest folk who have released on the label since, umm, well I suppose Rob St. John actually. This is no problem of course - you don't run a record label if you're afraid of people younger than you - but nothing makes you feel like everyone's dad more than when the bands get into the Toad Van and all sit in the back. Thanks Dolfinz. Only Matt from Paws decided he was grown up enough to go for the front seat. And I'm quite glad of this actually, because he [...]

Casablanca Media Publishing did a week-long songwriters retreat last year at a cottage in Collingwood, Ontario, bringing together a bunch of cool indie artist to chill and write stuff. This is a song they sent over with members of Hooded Fang , You Say Party and Winter Gloves . You can listen to the rest of the songs they made here . Photo: Elizabeth Hunt

Seeing as we are in Canada for the weekend (dear thieves, the house is not unoccupied, and the lad staying there is a fighty little fucker), I figured some Canadian songs might be in order. I am actually half-Canadian, which is a bit odd, because I've never actually lived there. So it's always weird coming here, to a country I'm technically from, but which I really don't know at all. Given we played Born Gold, Odonis Odonis, Slow Down Molasses and Hot Panda on last week's show , however, I figured that was probably enough new Canadian [...]
The Canadians win at music. We went to three things at the Canadian showcase: Hooded Fang (above), Slow Down Molasses, and Hot Panda, and all three were fucking great. I know it's a cliché to say that Canadians seem to be disproportionately good at music, but on this weekend's evidence, they just are. Born Gold to follow later tonight! Brighton is an odd place. Seemingly designed around the car, with weird, three-lane roads running right through the middle of town and along the waterfront, and with the place centred on a series of huge [...]

Frank Yang It's basically a given that the songwriters who pen the saddest songs also have the wickedest senses of humour, right? I have no quantitative proof to support this - only anecdotal - but if I were to start assembling some scientific proofs in support of this hypothesis, I'd certainly include Rose Cousins' show at The Rivoli on Thursday night in the lab report. It was a record release show for her third album We Have Made A Spark - the gorgeousness of which was saluted hereabouts [...]

Canadian Blast have unveiled a great little mixtape to get us all in the mood for The Great Escape next weekend. Premiering yesterday over at NME.COM , the playlist features the likes of Grimes , Doldrums and Hooded Fang . You can check out more deets about the Canadian Blast showcase at the fest displayed in the poster above. Listen to the Canada lovefest below:
