Happy Thanksgiving in Canada. Since I didn't do last week's chart due to being at Pop Montreal. This is a double dose of the music singles chart. In chart #24 there is no change with the #1 spot but there are a few debuts. In chart #25 after seven weeks The Love Machine makes it to #1. Found out that their music video is "not playable" on Much Music . (Hello! You guys don't play anymore music videos) At least its getting the band some attention. Check out the rest of the [...]

Its been awhile since I last heard from Hooded Fang . Last time I saw them was on April 15, 2009 . Hooded Fang is a seven piece band from Toronto. The members are: Daniel Lee April Aliermo Julia Barnes Nicholas Hune-Brown Lane Halley Lorna Wright Eric Woolston Their music ranges from indie rock, pop, orchestral pop and synth-pop. Think of Ohbijou and Forest City Lovers but more [...]

It's not often that a band generates a healthy amount of buzz and still takes the time to create a solid record instead of just recording sketches and unfinished thoughts. I wish it happened more often. Bands need to slow down and realize a "sound" is developed by gigging and putting in the hours. Sadly it's getting to the point where that crucial element of progression is being overlooked and often hurting musicians' output. For Toronto septet, Hooded Fang , two years between the release of a stellar EP and their debut, [...]
Two nights down for Canadian Music week, and two more to go for me. Tonight will probably be a night at Lee's with hopefully a final destination of Supermarket for Phantogram . But, I'll have to see where the night takes me. So far, I've managed to catch sets from Sweden's Hellsongs (which I posted about here ), The Wilderness Of Manitoba , Pick A Piper , Family Of The Year , Forest City Lovers , Hooded Fang , The Rest , Little Dragon and Rich Aucoin [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive , Movies , Canada Cult film director Bruce McDonald, of last year's horror fave 'Pontypool' and classic mock-rockumentary 'Hard Core Logo,' is transforming Canadian actress Molly Parker ('Deadwood,' 'The Road') into a real rock star. For his upcoming film 'Trigger,' a rock'n'roll drama about two ex-bandmates getting back together to relive their former glories for a benefit concert, McDonald has organized an actual benefit concert and made it open to the public. On Feb 14, Parker will [...]

Norman Wong After being out of sight for what seemed like the longest time following the 2004 release of Darby & Joan , Toronto's Reg Vermue, aka Gentleman Reg , has been nigh-inescapable since the release of fourth album Jet Black just under a year ago. He's played many shows big and small, toured North America with The Hidden Cameras and late last year, released a new digital EP in Heavy Head . And now, following his set opening [...]

I realize that the last thing that you were probably expecting me to rave about on this here snobby music blog is musical theatre, but yesterday I had the pleasure of seeing a show that I thought was downright delightful from start to finish and I really wanted to take the opportunity to promote it before you miss the chance to see it on such a small and affordable stage. Yes, I predict some big things for this one. Just East Of Broadway was a runaway hit at last summer's [...]

Frank Yang In leading up to Friday night's show at Lee's Palace, I'd wondered aloud as to why it had taken The Wooden Sky so long to play a proper hometown show, what with their latest record, the ex If I Don't Come Home You'll Know I'm Gone having come out all the way back in August. Walking into Lee's, I got my answer - they were building their sets. The stage was breathtakingly decorated with all manner of props and sculptures built of paperback [...]

One of the country's top folk rock bands, the Wooden Sky , released their sophomore full-length album--- If I Don't Come Home You'll Know I'm Gone ---this summer. ( I liked it ; still do.) To celebrate the release, the men went on the road, playing backyards, living rooms, rooftops, and other alternative spaces. Filmmaker Scott Cudmore went with them: (Part 2 of the documentary is up here , and look for parts 3 and 4 later this month.) Although the summer tour was fantastic for the bands and fans [...]
photo credit: Joe Fuda As Matthew of I(Heart)Music has done over the past four years, he's again polled a selection of Canadian music writers, journalists and bloggers for their top ten hottest Canadian bands / artists of the year . I've always been happy to participate and this year's not any different. In some ways, I'm behind the curve on some of the new artists that made the top 32 - bands like The Balconies , The Wooden Sky and Bruce Peninsula who I've [...]

This will be the last of the Pop Montreal stuff. This time its all a bunch of random silly interviews. Three different interviews and got ambushed by PDF Format . The first one is with Laura Barrett The second one is with Hooded Fang . Very funny and hilarious and was surprised this person made an guest appearance in the interview. [...]

Yesterday Sonic Boom hosted a pretty full afternoon/evening of free music in honour of International Record Store Day and although I wasn't able to stay for the whole thing, I did catch the first four bands. In the spirit of musical appreciation, diversity was the order of the day with all of the bands bringing something unique to the table. My vote for most improved band goes to Hooded Fang , whom I have now seen three times in only a few months. I always liked them, [...]

What a weekend it was . 2 nights, 2 venues, 24 acts (including hosts Iron Cobra and The Flirts ), more than 8 hours of entertainment, minus two 20 minute intermissions, and a lot of very impressed audience members, many of whom left talking excitedly about acts they'd not known before these shows. Julie Tepperman played anxious bride Rachel in Convergence's Theatre's side-splitting excerpt from their play "Yichud/Seclusion", Friday night at Bread and Circus (this and all subsequent photos in this post are by Skye Regan). [...]

( Note: I'm mentioning last night's Wombat Wednesdays Valentine's special after the fact, because a) February curator Magali Meagher has several more Wombat Wednesdays scheduled this month, and b) several performers have upcoming shows, including Gentleman Reg's in-store and CD release, and Levi Macdougall & Katie Crown at Laugh Sabbath and, well, my shows . The Wombats in Love show was slated for a profile yesterday on the site, but I've been a busy fella, and I [...]

Die Roten Punkte This week, Thunderheist and Shad top a series of FREE weekend shows in Toronto; the Rhubarb and Weesageechak Festival s open at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre and Theatre Passe Muraille, respectively; Ruby Coast and Winter Gloves headline a rock solid night of indie music at the Horseshoe Tavern on Thursday; Bad Dog Theatre's Globehead Tournament ramps up to the finals [...]
(Augh! I'm still shoring up the wordier part of this week's update - the last few days have been crazy - but I figured I could at least put up the week's picks. The full update will be up in a few hours, and the event calendar will be updated shortly after that. - Steve) Steve's Weekly Picks for Jan. 23rd - Jan. 30th, 2009: [...]

Frank Yang I couldn't offer any excuse for not discovering Bishop Allen sooner when I finally got around to reviewing their album The Broken String back in December , but maybe I could have just said "I hadn't seen Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist yet". Apparently the exposure gained from an appearance in said film has done wonders for the Brooklyn band's profile and helped explain why the El Mocambo was so healthily full on Saturday night, despite yet another snowstorm. [...]
