Heading to Austin this week for Chaos in Tejas? We're glad to hear. It's gonna be an epic - yes, epic - weekend of death metal, crust, punk, and a whole lotta Lone Star. Andy and Van will be at the fest representing the fest for the 'cake, so come give us a drink for our hand and a punch for our nutsacks. Here's a list of the shows we'll be at, plus alternatives if our main picks aren't your
Hey dudes and ladies, sorry I haven't been posting much this month. I've been travelingeven more than usual, and haven't had much time to sit down and write down much of anything besides flight confirmation numbers and directions to wherever I happen to be sleeping any given evening. Cheers once again to those of you [...]
Well, this makes up for losing Curren$y.Austin people: your dreams of seeing "Wardance" performed live will come true soon. Killing Joke has just been confirmed for Chaos in Tejas, who were clearly not content with just having the already unfuckwithable Autopsy and Converge on board. Since Inquisition aren't returning for another round, somebody's gotta represent the corpse paint, and who better
The dudes at Chaos in Tejas just scored another huge coup - Converge! Yes, the New England bangers are confirmed for the fest, and if you've seen one or many of their live shows, you know ish just got real serious. Between this, Autopsy, Hooded Menace, and Tragedy, this may be the best year of Chaos ever. Also newly confirmed are Austin grinders Hatred Surge, Boston powerviolence group Mind
BrooklynVegan whipped us a hot stack of awesome metalpunkcakes (you could say, Crustcakes?! *ba dumsh*) this morning by releasing a huge list of more confirmed bands for this year's Chaos in Tejas festival. Now, we were pretty much already on board when Autopsy was confirmed (and according to BV, it'll be their ONLY U.S. show), so they could have added 3oh!3, The Strokes, and Billy fucking Ocean,

2010 can fuck right off. It was a year of non-stop disapointments and set backs. Truthfully, I can't wait until 2010 is over because it is one year closer to total annihilation. Surly? Yes, but this is how I cope…. 1. 1. Kriegshog- s/t (HG Fact)- every decade it seems that some Japanese hardcore monster is released. This is the one. Features a mind melting collage art of bombs, skeletons and soldiers. The new atomic age is here, pussies. Get on your knees. Added plus, they issued this thing and broke up. [...]

More festival news to make you jealous! This time it's about Roadburn, which we've salivated over like most men do over Christina Hendricks. If you thought they couldn't rival last year...well, they did. Trust us.Godflesh are playing Streetcleaner in its entirety. Swans are headlining one night. Candlemass will perform their classic debut Epicus Doomicus Metallicus as a whole, featuring original
You know sometimes something comes along that is so inherently metal, right down in its bones and blood and balls, that I feel inadequate even writing about it? Well, that's how I feel about next months inaugural Live Evil Festival. It's so damn heavy I think it might just drag The Underworld in Camden literally down [...]
"Something CAN actually come out of pure uncorrupt underground idealism if one does it long enough." -- FenrizI think it's time we all just go ahead and declare Gylve "Fenriz" Nagell the raddest dude in metal, full stop. From his taste-defining Band of the Week blog and authoritative mixtapes as DJ Vast Knowledge of Music to his dedication to all things outdoors (Hiking Metal Punks Forever!),
The weather clouded up and we got some rain and hail, so it's back to the feel-bad jams that befit our never-ending bummer winter/the spring that never was. Hooded Menace are a Finnish band with a great name who sound like they spent way too much time listening to Black Sabbath on the wrong speed and then got a guitarist to come in with the most sickening, discordant harmonies possible. It's slow, queasy and yes, totally awesome. Until the sun comes back, I'm mired in this sludge.
Hooded Menace recently announced some puzzling news: they are getting a new vocalist. Not long ago the band expanded into a three piece (seen in the picture above), adding Antti on bass in order to start playing live. Before Hooded Menace was Lasse (vox, guitar, bass) and Pekka (drums) and did not play live. Now the band announces inclusion of Oula on vocals. Oula is also currently the vocalist
Coffins have added a one minute sample of the song, "In Bloody Sewage" to their MySpace page. From their upcoming split with Hooded Menace (another one of our favorite death/doom entities), "In Bloody Sewage" gives you exactly what you want from Coffins: pounding, relentless, death metal....at a medium pace. As with most Hooded Menace vinyl, the split will be released by Doomentia Records. We
We were really excited to hear about the new Hooded Menace record that is coming soon. But unfortunately, Hooded Menace mainman Lasse never takes his doom/death show on the road. Bummer. However, with all that time that Lasse isn't spending on the road he has laid out writing/recording plans for his one man death-metal band Claws. The band's last effort Absorbed In The Nethervoids was a major hit

This is a huge month for metal. (See calendar here . Use "Agenda" view at the upper right, and click on entries to expand and collapse them.) The highest profile releases are Burzum, Triptykon, and The Dillinger Escape Plan. (You can see "Farewell, Mona Lisa," the first video from DEP's album below.) Landmine Marathon and Immolation have long-awaited records out. At the Gates and Primordial unveil DVD sets; I'm particularly excited for the latter. Apostle of Solitude - December Drives Me to Tears [...]

While the release date is still TBA, Profound Lore estimates it to be available late March/early April. Death doom metal seldom receives the attention it deserves. A few prominent names hold this genre together, such as Mythic, Funebrarum, and Coffins. This sound is more than just Slayer-meets-Black Sabbath. Low-end slow parts, speedier grooves, and constipated grunts make up death doom. Most albums pay tribute to '80s horror with corpse-laden artwork and classic film clips. Like many music canons, there's only so much variation left for originality. But disregarding predictable riffs, artwork, and vocal style, Finland's Hooded Menace strike big. Beauty and the Feast (excerpt) The Eyeless Horde [...]
