Seeing as we are in Canada for the weekend (dear thieves, the house is not unoccupied, and the lad staying there is a fighty little fucker), I figured some Canadian songs might be in order. I am actually half-Canadian, which is a bit odd, because I've never actually lived there. So it's always weird coming here, to a country I'm technically from, but which I really don't know at all. Given we played Born Gold, Odonis Odonis, Slow Down Molasses and Hot Panda on last week's show , however, I figured that was probably enough new Canadian [...]
The Canadians win at music. We went to three things at the Canadian showcase: Hooded Fang (above), Slow Down Molasses, and Hot Panda, and all three were fucking great. I know it's a cliché to say that Canadians seem to be disproportionately good at music, but on this weekend's evidence, they just are. Born Gold to follow later tonight! Brighton is an odd place. Seemingly designed around the car, with weird, three-lane roads running right through the middle of town and along the waterfront, and with the place centred on a series of huge [...]

Frank Yang It's basically a given that the songwriters who pen the saddest songs also have the wickedest senses of humour, right? I have no quantitative proof to support this - only anecdotal - but if I were to start assembling some scientific proofs in support of this hypothesis, I'd certainly include Rose Cousins' show at The Rivoli on Thursday night in the lab report. It was a record release show for her third album We Have Made A Spark - the gorgeousness of which was saluted hereabouts [...]

Canadian Blast have unveiled a great little mixtape to get us all in the mood for The Great Escape next weekend. Premiering yesterday over at NME.COM , the playlist features the likes of Grimes , Doldrums and Hooded Fang . You can check out more deets about the Canadian Blast showcase at the fest displayed in the poster above. Listen to the Canada lovefest below:

Back when I reviewed Tosta Mista , the second full-length from Canadian act Hooded Fang in November 2011 it passed by without much fuss at all, despite being a fine wee album of surf pop and garage rock tunes. However, since the proper UK release of the record through Full Time Hobby , interest in the band has finally, and deservedly, reached suitable proportions. So much so that this month sees their second visit of the year to these shores - playing larger venues than their trip in [...]

I didn't even know there was a Portuguese quarter to Toronto before this album but there is and Hooded Fang are possibly its only inhabitants. Alas two of the band had a relationship break-up prior to Tosta Mista but, luckily, the odd song aside ("When you take off all your clothes / You still look like an icy ho." - Clap ), this is cheery toe tapping garage pop. Clocking a rather cheeky mere twenty three minutes and with only seven tracks and three mini instrumental extracts to boast, it barely feels like a full album. [...]

A little-known fact for first-timers at SXSW : the bands you like are probably playing unofficial showcases and gigs at small, hole in the wall-type places. (This can be a real problem if you have an allergy to renting a car in an unfamiliar town and hate parallel parking, both of which apply to me.) It's incredibly inefficient, but the only successful way I've found to discover these set times and locations is by paying attention to individual band's Facebooks or Web sites that will say they're playing this bar out of walking [...]
On their second album Toronto's ingenious pop band Hooded Fang are taking a big step back from the luxurious instrumentation and lyricism of their previous work. Firstly some instruments, and consequently members of the band, have been removed from the equation: gone are the horns, accordion and glockenspiel. Second phase: the clean, bright production of the first album has disappeared, replaced by a lo-fi cocoon just so it sounds like any record from Thee Oh Sees. Finally, they've lowered their musical ambitions to average garage-pop singles ('Brahma', 'Vacationation') and unworthy surf-rock tunes ('Clap', 'ESP'). If putting guitars and [...]

Tweet A lazy slacker of a tune courtesy of a singer who could well fall asleep at any minute and backing music that sounds far too casual to have been produced in a studio that charges by the hour. The truth of course is that such slovenly application takes an age to perfect, in the case of Canadian band Hooded Fang that be about the time it takes to get around to recording your second album called 'Tosta Mista'. 'Brahma' may be [...]

Holy smokes. What a day. So much great music. So much sweat coming out of so many talented pores. So much healing for my eardrums to do. Except they are gonna have to wait because we have 3 more days of madness! But enough about the future, lets take a peek at the past. Last night surprise guests Cherub kicked things off at The Firehouse Lounge with a steamy set of sexed up groove rock. Today Paula & Karol kicked things off with their boy/girl bounce-folk which The Minutes [...]

This week sees Canadian band Hooded Fang release new album 'Tosta Mista' in the UK and you can grab a free download of the psych-pop track 'ESP' right here.
Filed under: News , Exclusive , New Music , New Releases Daps Resords Phèdre, an electronic Canadian trio that started off as a "spontaneous, half-drunken explosion," has now caught the eyes of the blogosphere with their brand of trippy electro-pop heard on their just-released debut. "We're glad that people are attracted to the decadence and enthusiasm that the project exudes," singer Daniel Lee tells Spinner. "It's never been serious, though it is always [...]

From Toronto in Canada, Hooded Fang are releasing their album Tosta Mista on 12 Mar 2012 on Full Time Hobby. It's their second album, the first was self-titled. UK readers have unfortunately just missed a short tour of London venues they undertook in February. Download ESP Free Music, Every Day. Subscribe to the Daily Dose. [...]

Apologies to my brothas out there, but February has become Asian appreciation month due to the emergence of one Jeremy Lin. This Taiwanese sensation has ignited the city of New York, revived interest in basketball and made some Asians proud. So what if he'll probably regress back to some normal state in a few weeks? The damage is done. Anyways, here are ten Asians in indie bands. Morning Benders Chris Chu and John Chu are members of the Morning Benders, and also, cousins with my friend Jocelyn. This [...]

Another week, another brief missive from the Great ANBAD New Band Pile That Threatens To Topple At Any Moment And Kill Us All. Whilst stationed in Brooklyn, I've been missing most of the breathless reporting on what mildly-degrading actions Official ANBAD Mascot Alex James is undertaking this week. Thus please accept another endearing image of our favourite bassist from the stockpile that has steadily built up. MIXTAPE: FIRST! Front and, indeed centre on this week's mixtape is the gloriously be-monikered Hooded Fang , who have spliced together kaleidoscopic (is [...]

" Three lovers from Monaco, raised in a cave of gold... " We're still obsessed with the awesome, ridiculous NSFW video for Phèdre 's " In Decay ," so we were psyched when the band asked us to premiere their addictive, " Some Velvet Morning "/ Greek mythology -inspired, forthcoming self-titled debut LP here in its entirety. The group's playfully dark, sweetly romantic, and often strangely affecting (see " Ode to the Swinger " + " Glitter on Her Face ") jams recall the warped AM avant-pop vibes of Ariel Pink, John [...]

I don't know about where you are, but we are having a very mild winter. Not so mild that I should have been eating at outdoor burger joint Shake Shack last night, but I was and is where I snapped the picture that is now this week's cover art. There's lots of good new music on here, including the returns of a few favorite bands. Dig in: DOWNLOAD WINTRY MIX 2.03.2012 Tracklist: 1. Burning Hearts - Into the Wilderness [...]
