I want to start this review by quoting my first post on Hooray For Earth , from April 2007: Hooray for Earth get an A for their persistence. They've made every effort to get this blogger's attention. In fact, you might say they're relentless. Yeah. That's how I'd described their self-titled debut, as a matter of fact. Pop music that is driven by drums. In every song, it's the drums that rise to the top of the mix and dominate the combination of growling synth and guitar. Under all that are the vocals, which seem [...]
We can all agree, Earth is a pretty cool place. There's a lot of great music here, and things like the sky and mountains are just undeniably beautiful. Since you think the Earth is so awesome, why not get behind a band that celebrates it? Boston's Hooray for Earth are definitely a pop group--there's no doubt about that--but they seem to straddle so many different flavors of pop. The melody and vocal delivery obviously come from a rock music upbringing, but the synths and heavily produced drums make Hooray's music almost beg for a techno remix. [...]

Hear that? It's the calm before the storm, as next week finds the first major week of releases to start off the year. But until then, there are still a few releases this week to comb through. I haven't listened to a lot of these, outside of maybe one or two, just enough to include them on the Graboid. If there is anything else you can recommend this week do feel free to let us know in the comments. Angil + Hiddntracks [...]

That old mailbox problem persists, so here are 4 of the better tracks recently found in the mailbox. + Murder Mystery – The World This is another one of those charming indie pop tunes that's absolutely impossible to resist. + The Online Romance – Ladybug, Don't Smile Dreamy folk-pop tune with lovely harmonies. + Kaka – What a [...]

Admittedly, Hooray For Earth 's style is a little heavier than what I usually go for. However, their name is also, a little more awesome than I usually go for. So, I've made a compromise and I'm writing about them. Hooray For Earth releases their self-titled LP on Dopamine Records on January 13, 2009. I can't think of a better way to start off the New Year than by celebrating a band that's bringing both a touch of class and a fistful of rock to the party. mp3 : Take Care [...]

Tonight in DC there's good sounds all around town. The Red and the Black have a new favorite of mine, Hooray For Earth along with No Compromise . The Black Cat has the Radar Brothers and Aerialist while DC9 has The Childballads , The King Left , and Howlies . Over in Fredericksburg, VA the Third Floor has a stellar night of music with Ra Ra Riot , Princeton , and Carlos, I'm Pregnant . Up north in Philly the [...]

Tonight in DC there's a load of solid shows for you to check out. Darker My Love is at the Rock and Roll Hotel with Strange Boys and Love Is All while Loretta Lynn and Justin Jones play a recently announced show at the 9:30 Club. Across the way in Arlington, VA Iota has a super one with The Modern Skirts and The Old Ceremony. Up north in Philadelphia there's also a plethora of great shows to see. The Fire has National Eye, The Armchairs, Toy Soldiers, and Tavo Carbone while the Trocadero has Mercury Rev and Dean & Britta. [...]

In January of 2009 Dopamine Records is set to re-release Boston quartet Hooray For Earth 's debut S/T album. I've been listening to this album fairly frequently for the last month or so and have had a hard time pinning them down. Imagine if Sean Lennon went hardcore and you might be tiptoeing close to their high wire sound. Hooray For Earth actually remind me a lot of Baltimore's Avec. While Avec combine Mates Of State pop with Helmet style rock, Hooray For Earth take more Melvins/Nirvana loudness and counter it with Beatles era pop. [...]

"Take Care" - Hooray For Earth With a dense one-two beat, a tumble of words that sound concrete but don't tell us much of anything, and no introduction whatsoever, "Take Care" foists itself upon the listener without warning, and takes a while to make musical sense. But the chorus'll hook you in, I think. The song is still driving fuzzily along, but a grand, anthemic melody rises up in the midst of the chugging fuzz, like the sun breaking through on a stormy day. Or, at least, it [...]

Boston/New York band Hooray For Earth embark an East Coast Tour this December to support their latest record Hooray For Earth, releasing January 13th on Dopamine Records . They're actually coming through Florida and stopping by Jacksonville on December 13th (see dates below). This is a good thing as Hooray For Earth are a rather stunningly good band that somehow manages to take the synth work last heard on Europe's Final Countdown and reconstruct in an indie rock format with hooks that are so big they could reel in [...]
