Hornet Leg Album: Still Life (Buy) Label: StankHouse Records Hornet Leg - Those Kids Hornet Leg - Sleep Tweet

It's taken me weeks to finally get around to writing something about Hornet Leg , which is fitting considering it took months before I finally got around to giving the band's latest LP a spin. Now, you get to read about and listen to them in just a matter of minutes. It's like magic. The Portland trio/duo/solo-act released their newest full-length Still Life ( Stankhouse ) in October criminally under the radar. Led by Chris Sutton-who's guitarred in Calvin Johnson's Dub Narcotic Sound System , C.O.C.O [...]

Monday, December 14, 2009 Well hot damn, again again again, that always looming end of year has crashed down upon me, and as always I'm ill-prepared and forgetful. Let me be honest for a second, the end of the year seems to take me by surprise every year, and every year I look back on the albums I've listened to, and most often can't remember which ones stood out whatsoever. Instead I see a blur of music, an imaginary stack of albums that could be from 2009 or could be from 1909. [...]

It's as if you took a pop group of the early 1960s - a jangly little threesome or a propulsive quartet - and you remove them from reality. You pull them through the expanses of space and time to the very edges of the world as we know it, and there you let them rest. Everything [...]
One of the most fun shows I've seen when I first hit NYC was C.O.C.O. busting lo-fi dance grooves to a room of maybe 15 while their friend/dancer tore it up like a robot shaking the DT's. After the show the club promptly turned into some sort of leather fetish DJ night and we awkwardly shuffled away. Sutton's works following C.O.C.O. and Dub-Narcotic have yet to recapture the perfect immediacy of that night…until now. Rocking a stripped-down and ramshackle brand of garage blues that culls from the best tendencies that bruised genre has to offer Sutton gives pop a [...]

It's interesting to think what kind of music Brad Hargett and JB Townsend would be making had they stayed in Florida. The two met there, moved to Brooklyn in 2002 and formed Crystal Stilts soon after. The band just released its first full-length Alight of Night last month-although it sounds like these guys spent some time at The Factory . It's chilly, dark and spacious but allows just enough sunlight to break through. Hargett sings with little change in inflection while Townsend strums jubilant chords and drummer [...]
A day late.... Oz (me): The Acorn - Dents It's hard to find a subtle use of the banjo, but The Acorn find a way to mix it in with an incredible song about human relationships changing their course. _ Adrian : Arcade Fire - Intervention I was in Hawaii. My friend and I rented a car with a CD player; I hadn't brought any CDs. He had brought three: Neon Bible and two Tom Waits CDs. I'm [...]
Song obsessions are those songs that we listen to on repeat. I noticed that my obsessions are often a week long. I also thought that other people might have similar obsessions. I've collected a panel of a few like-minded individuals and gotten their "song obsessions of the week." Quite often it's easy to explain why the song is good; it's much hard to explain why we're obsessed. Maybe you'll become obsessed with one of these. - Adrian ( me ): Arcade Fire - Intervention (mp3) ( buy [...]
