I've been taking a second of because...well. Because I fucking felt like it, but dudes, I just came back to tell you this. THIS IS IMPORTANT. This little fact might just turn your year for the better so listen up. The new Horse Feathers album is stunning. Nay, STUNNING, all capital and none of that lowercase shit. Yes internet, I'm yelling. I should really save this for the weekend, for a time when I can sit with headphones in and ruminate on these tones instead of writing about it so [...]

Let's get right to it. It's Tuesday and that means there's a whole bunch of music coming right at you like a heat-seeking missile. What are you going to do about it? I'll tell ya... Check out Neon Trees new album Picture Show . Neon Trees are a Utah band formed by former neighbors Tyler Glen Chris Allen. Picture Show is the group's second album after rising quickly to semi-stardom from their single "Animal" (which will be on the radio for years to come) and my personal favorite "19833. These guys have the [...]
Horse Feathers - Where I'll Be Portland, Oregon based folk outfit Horse Feathers released their fourth studio album today, Cynic's New Year . The quintet has always had all of the pieces to make up a great folk group. The combination of fiddles, banjo and strings with lead singer Justin Ringle's rough but soothing voice have always made Horse Feathers' sound distinct. But on their fourth album, they have managed to fill out their sound. Instead of just the river, mountains, trees and valleys, we've got the full landscape. And it is beautiful. [...]
It's unfortunate that Horse Feathers ' Justin Ringle never gets lumped in with the rest of the indie folk A-list, among names like Robin Pecknold, Justin Vernon, or Sam Beam. The four records of breezy, ramshackle Americana he's released with the Portland outfit have been every bit as good as second-tier folk acts such as Bowerbirds and, at their best, have graced a similar strata of rustic beauty that's been the trademark of bands like Fleet Foxes. This fourth LP once again comes close to making that leap, but ultimately it falls just short of the mark. [...]

A more refreshing kind of indie folk.
Lagniappe (la·gniappe) noun \ˈlan-ˌyap,' – 1. An extra or unexpected gift or benefit. 2. Something given or obtained as a gratuity or bonus. Six years after its initial release Horse Feathers debut, Words Are Dead, remains one of my favorite folk LPs of the past decade. The evolution of Horse Feathers from the solo moniker of singer/songwriter Justin Ringle to a more full-fledged indie folk/pop band has been slow but steady over the course of four albums in six years. Cynic's New Year (April 17, Kill Rock Stars) isn't radically different in sound or scope to 2010's excellent Thistled Spring , but the album's more expansive alt/folk sound -- hailed as "impeccably lovely" by NPR -- gently pulls back the curtain to reveal a larger sonic stage for Ringle's superbly crafted songs. Guitar and banjo mingle with [...]

On the band's fourth album, the tension between gorgeousness and grief gets a single line to sum it all up: "Beauty and loss, they are one and the same." Horse Feathers' new album, Cynic's New Year, comes out April 17. Read more »
Horse Feathers - Where I'll Be The fourth record titled, Cynic's New Year, from Horse Feathers seems to already be shaping up to be a favorite of mine. Justin Ringle's voice is solid gold, that of an angel, and their carefully crafted, simplistic folk music is both endearing and totally goddamn beautiful. Check out the wistful, gentle "Where I'll Be," and get ready for their release on April 17th. Tour: April 13 – Eugene, OR @ Sam Bonds April 14 – Salem, OR @ Grand [...]
Words // Adam Sharp 'The House That Heaven Built'- Japandroids Noisy, brash, full of call and response shouting and a guitar line that makes me feel 15 again. There's not a lot to dislike. Missy Prince I just got back from my first SXSW, and I'm not sure I will ever be the same. At least, my liver won't. But really, it was my heaven--live music on every block, food trucks galore, and a never ending supply of cute scruffy boys in well-fitting jeans. But while those last two were nice perks, let's talk about the important thing here: the music! I went to Austin with a stacked
