Summer's over and the record labels aren't frucking around. Noteworthy Albums Released on 9/9/08: Albums I've Heard: The New Year : The New Year (Touch & Go) – I first got into the Kadane Brothers back in the Bedhead days circa 1994 or 1995 when my old roommate and I went to see them at the Replay in Lawrence, Kansas. There was a year or two where I went to sleep to Bedhead every day. I was pleasantly [...]

Horse Feathers House With no Home Website | Myspace [ HORSE FEATHERS - HELEN (daytrotter session) ]

It's 4 a.m. My vanilla scented candle has burned to a close. So has my energy. My mind is swarmed with the Vedic texts and Sutras from my Hinduism readings. It still seems light outside? Nightime here really isn't very dark. I say that, but over these 3 weeks in Montreal I have heard the phrase "just wait until winter" a countless amount. So, I guess, I'll wait until winter, maybe the sky will darken, maybe I will learn the concept of sleep, maybe I'll stop drinking so much coffee...... The National - About Today (Live) [...]

After a week off, the Daily Graboid is back and better than ever, as we have a ton of of releases to sift through this week. This seems to be a consistent recurrence as there always seems to be an enormous amount of albums the week after I tend to take breaks from the blog. This sort of thing is never anything to complain about, as it's always great to discover new music. This week brings us new albums from Okkervil River, Calexico, The Broken West, Portastatic, Emiliana Torrini, Chan VanGaalen and some lesser known TYS [...]

HANK ALTOGETHER: We promise new content and, oh boy, do we ever deliver. Through the magic of the internet, I sat down with Justin Ringle of my new favorite band, Horse Feathers . Their new LP, House with No Home , was released yesterday on Kill Rock Stars . Look after the interview for music and tour dates. What are your plans to celebrate your album's release? We'll be playing a show Oct. 3rd at Holocene here in Portland, OR. Our good [...]
In the journey for new music, you sift through lots of sounds making quick judgments, perhaps sometimes tossing a good listen to the side if it doesn't grab you in its first few seconds, maybe you're feeling hasty or maybe that was a sweet slow song and you're looking for ...

A pretty big release week. No idea why. Metallica is putting their new one out... on Friday. Whatever floats their boat. And the posthumous release from Mitch Hedburg will be awesome. I'll definitely be checking out stuff from Calexico , Fujiya and Miyagi , Woven Hand , Mogwai and Jesu too. And probably Brian Welch album for a good laugh. :: A Static Lullaby , Rattlesnake! (Fearless) :: Aids Wolf [...]

Also, If you missed Colourmusic's vinyl release of F Monday Orange February Venus Lunatic 1 Or 13 a couple of weeks back you can now pick it up on CD. So the e'er prolific John Darnielle is apparently ready to follow up the excellent Heretic Pride (look for that on my top albums list this year for sure) with not one, but two EPs, for a total of ten tracks. The first, Satanic Messiah , is a straight-up four-song number, but it's the second that's got me all titillated as it's a collaboration with Kaki King. It's called Black Pear Tree and, like Satanic Messiah , I have no idea when it's going to come out. What I DO know is that you can [...]

Is it right to call this American chamber-folk? I'm not always so good withy the pithy and largely meaningless generalisations, but I guess if you were looking for a box to put this in, then that might be the one. Horse Feathers first album was much more about plucked strings and banjo than this, which really emphasises the cello and violin, and they twist together in a kind of luxuriant, swirling dance. It's at once sleepy and romantic, grand and spare. Listening to this record, Horse Feathers seem to have developed a knack of waiting [...]
As I was browsing music blogs recently, I came across a single by this new singer/songwriter calling himself Horse Feathers. "Curs In The Weeds," the lead single from the upcoming album House With No Home, is a startlingly beautiful and captivating folk song, bringing to mind Iron & Wine and Bon Iver. With haunting vocals and raw guitar and violin, the track has a quiet intensity that makes for quite a first impression. Obscure Sound has a review of House With No Home (out on 9/9) on their website. [...]

[ source ] Horse Feathers - "Helen" An orgiastic past. A turgid and turbulent past. Like a flipbook where every image is different, it's confusing to think back on it. It's sometimes painful or shocking to think back on it, especially compared with the current surroundings; so calm and warm and sun-dimmed. With a dry clicking swallow, it's the easiest thing in the world to just never think about it again. And yet, it's kind of like starting at zero, you feel jealous of strangers, like they must have a [...]

These days, open mic nights usually cause more forms of embarrassment than success. Like the art of discovering new music in itself, though, there are a few gems in the rough just waiting to be found. Before the digital age where anyone could simply create music, upload it, and add a million or so friends on MySpace for instantaneous exposure of some sort, the options were limited to publically displaying your talent. Sure, you could still send a demo tape to the record label of your choice, but there was a good chance it was not even going to be [...]

MP3: HORSE FEATHERS "Curs in the Weed" ( Kill Rock Stars ) Frontman Justin Ringle styles his voice after Nick Drake on this new track. Despite a roster of multi-instrument-playing band members, the Oregon-based outfit finds beauty in the simple and sparse. Horse Feathers' new album House with No Name is available on Sept. 9.
